Stafford is the best option next year. Nobody else even close. I doubt you find your QB of the future in this draft either but someone might surprise.

Its pretty simple. If Stafford wants to keep playing you have to find a way to make sure he does. Even if it means paying him more guaranteed money like he wanted last year. You are not gonna find a comparable quarterback if you really have Superbowl aspirations. There are 14 quarterbacks who make more money than Stafford right now. I'd say Stafford is a bargain for that money.

I think it's setting up to be a bit of a battle between Stafford and the front office. He played nice this last off season regarding more guaranteed money but is likely seeking some big guarantees for the next few seasons. I can see it going either way, but McVay doesn't want to drag it out. You might see Stafford released at some point before the draft.
So when you going to tell us the punch line to this joke?

Zach Wilson wasn't a free agent to be brought in. He had to be traded for and McVay wanted Garappolo who signed a month prior to his eventual trade. Makes sense as the veteran Garappolo already had a feel for some of the offense (unlike Wentz) and would be a better backup. And Snead wasn't going to give up on his Stetson Bennett selection after just one season.

Also, it's possible that LaFleur wasn't any more ready to be an offensive coordinator / play caller than Wilson was to start as Joe Flacco looked FAR better in Cleveland than he did in New York.
If the Rams wanted him they would have been in the mix. Their OC was clearly not impressed by the kid.

I mean, its possible they were in the mix and elected to go with the vet instead. All I'll say on this is, I'd rather have Wilson then Bennett. At least Wilson has had some very good NFL games and he can scramble for yards. He had all the tools you'd want in college.

Bennett was a play for a specific type of backup. Never meant to be a QB of the future. He was supposed to be a gamer who could steal you 3 out of 5 games if Stafford went down for any time.

And not sure that play will end up working out.

Is nobody going to call out Mike LaFleur?? doesn't he bear at least some responsibility for the stale play calling when we just weren't scoring points?
When we went into no-huddle mode, Stafford killed the Iggles. KILLED them. Got us within 10 yards of a triumphant win, and then... a huddle. A better play call might've at least gotten us the yards we needed.
McVay has his weaknesses as a play caller that we've all discussed but I'm inclined to give him and LaFleur a pass this year, a lot of teams were playng man against us and we just don't have the horses right now to beat man consistently. Even when Kupp was healthy and younger, we never had great answers against man coverage except when we had Watkins/Cooks. Kupp, Puka and Robinson (to a lesser extent) could win man matchups on occasion but that shrunk even more this year.

We need talent at pass catcher, ideally more speed. I think the play calling was actually pretty good at elevating an offense that actually has more holes in it than it's had in years in the passing game. I think some of those issues were papered over last year because Stafford was honestly on an a heater most of the year and doing insane things with the ball that he just wasn't doing this year.

He reminds me of Paxton Lynch. All the physical traits but can’t read a defense
That's not a bad comp. But I think he is considerably more talented. Either way though, when you talk castoffs there is always going to be a very strong argument against that player. There will be good reason that he is available on the cheap.

@JonRam99 is not wrong about LaFleur being underwhelming in some ways. He is not his brother. Also he came to us after a shitty run with NY. So just like with players, some of these coaches need to be developed in these roles. Working for McVay, who will ask him tough questions with his gameplan and push him to improve as he teaches him how it's done, is a big time benefit.

If McVay is concerned with his ability to do the job then he'll take some BS job somewhere and the Rams will act like it was some offer he could not pass up on. But judging off of Coach's comments in his most recent interview, it seems like he's happy with his coaching staff. Now of course with him that could all be bullshit. He is completely full of shite with the media when he discusses staff and players. Eventually, however, he tends to make the right calls.

The staff position that I am least happy with is the OL. I think Munchak should be hired and placed over our OL coach at the very least. Call him the OL Czar or other made up BS name, but create a position for him and phase this other coach out. That position on the staff needs to be able to field a good fucking OL week one. And Hagrid has not been able to do that. Also the OL ended our season as well with a terrible series in 2 minute. And while there was enough failure across the team to blame in that game, fact is we still failed at the end due to shitty and avoidable mistakes by the boys up front.

Why? They had their QBs. And we don't know if they were in the mix or not. My guess is the asking price on Wilson was probably much higher in March when they signed Garappolo than what it was just prior to the draft when he was traded.

Maybe Jimmy is the back-up plan if Stafford wants to retire. Its more if the team wants to pay him 40-60 mil for next two years or take the hit now and release him if hes not gonna be 100% in it with the team.

It effects how they are going to draft/ load up free agents on say a baun or higgins, Or lack there of. Matt stays for 2 years, we say load up the team for our best chance to win like we did in 2021-22. If not we are prob just gonna draft our list and move on and enter a semi rebuild and keep who we got/get rid of the notebooms.

This team is a borderline play off team with/without Stafford as QB. The difference being With Stafford we are a Superbowl contender!

Kupp will restructure his contract to stay, as hes done so at least twice now.

If Stafford stays, Kupp will too, If not, Kupp will be Traded.
Interesting that you mention Jimmy.

I hadn't really considered them turning to him, but after your post and @Merlin post about a serious rift, I'm starting to wonder.

Jimmy G looked good running the offense with backups against Seattle's starters. What if they feel that he's 80% of what Stafford can bring at 20% of the cost?

This is some news... Les Snead comments.

As a GM, you cannot make guarantees. It interferes with the negotiation process as well. Sure you’d like to have both players back, but you work for the Rams organization.

If Snead gets too committed to them during an interview, it could damage the negotiation process.

Specifically, I’d like to see the Rams with a 2 year $90M in guarantees contract with escalators to $100M for Stafford. 3rd year would be a team option at $45M up to $50M in escalators.

Kupp would need to be somewhere around $45M guaranteed with $70M escalators for 3 years. $37M guaranteed in first two years. Third year could be a potential cut with a thank you to Coop

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- When the New York Jets drafted quarterback Zach Wilson second overall in 2021, they handed him the starting job with no competition. In retrospect, that was a mistake, according to offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.

"In hindsight, it probably would've benefited [him] just to sit back and learn a little bit and watch a veteran and just kind of grow in this league -- kind of in the backseat, watching," LaFleur said Thursday. "Get better in practice, get better through the scout team and all that. But that wasn't the course that we went."

Geno Smith bombed in New York.
Sam Darnold bombed in New York
Zach Wilson bombed in New York with an inexperienced OC on a bad football team.

Stafford is not going to leave this team.

This is a SB team and Mathew damn well knows it.

If Dotson doesn't do that false start in my heart we were going to be SB champs.

We really are that good.
