Not exactly....he did sign a "bridge deal" for one year. After his 2nd starting season, he then played well enough to prove his value.

I wasn't aware of the "bridge" contract. We're both partially right.

Technically, this was a bridge contract and served the function of decreasing Green Bay's risk. After doing research, it appears they signed him to this contract in lieu of picking up his 5th year option. This contract lowered the guaranteed amount on his 5th year salary but paid him money up front and gave him the potential to make more with incentives. Win-win for both.

However, they still paid him the large contract after one season of starting. He signed an extension for $220 mil on 7/27/24, which was before he took one snap in his 5th season. And the bridge contract didn't give them an extra year to evaluate; it just replaced the optional 5th year.

To play football.

He’s among the best of the best at it, but geez. This is all so out of proportion to real world work.

The people in the stadium are able to pay the prices, clearly. Many of us subscribe to streaming… to pay for it all.
Its all supply and demand.
You know why a starting MLB pitcher makes more money than a neuro surgeon? They are harder to find.
Just supply and demand, nothing more.

Depending how it is structured it could be a self sabotaging deal for Mahomes if it guts depth/talent from the roster.
Also.....with this last injury, is this the start of the Mahomes injury train?

I had this thought in '08, after Tom Brady tore his ACL and missed a year after having won 3 Super Bowls.

Nah, more likely Patrick wins a few more.

Its crazy, it really is.
Meanwhile the people who build the infrastructure to make modern civilized life possible can barely afford to catch a game every few years. Get their lives sucked out of them, retire and be lucky to have 10 good years left as a geezer and take the dirt nap. Its a debt-slavery system.
Folks used to be able to catch a game pretty cheap, the whole family.
They deserve to be paid well. But 2 Ferrari's and one Lambo is enough. They don't deserve 3 homes, 8 super cars and a private island.

Mahomes will be 30 in Sept. This deal is a long-term deal for now. Always good to get a deal done sooner rather than later, as costs and guarantees keep increasing. At what point does the cost to fans kill the golden goose? We can see the NFL is expanding it's range to expand into the global market. The added streaming services needed to watch games can be an obstacle for many fans.
