Does anyone actually do this?
I'm afraid not. Jordan Love is The example.

Drafted in 2020.
Started in 2023, the 4th year of his rookie contract.
Played well enough in his one year of full-time work to demonstrate he was a legit NFL starter.
Signed an extension in July, 2024 for 4 years, $220 mil., an avg of $55 mil per year.

Thanks. I was asking because I had never heard of anyone doing it. I suppose I wouldn’t put it past this regime to break that glass case too but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Yeah, where it comes to 2nd Contracts, if they run consecutive with the 1st Contract there is really no middle ground. You get the max (or Franchised), or you get cut. Now if youre Mayfield/Darnold, and get RELEASED, your 2nd Contract is bridge-like (3 for 100). Of course teams didn't want to simply release guys like Tua, Love, so its either "shit or get off the potty." If Simpson sits for 3, or even 4 years (however unlikely) they will have to make their determination of his worthiness of a max 2nd Contract, based mainly on what theyve seen in practices and scrimmages.

I hope they become just like the Bengals with a massive QB contract and shedding depth hoping they can draft their way out of it.

Yeah, I'd say that's the general rule: you get the max, franchised, or cut.

If you're cut, the 2nd contract is only bridge-like after you've demonstrated ability to start. Mayfield wouldn't have gotten what he got if not for his stint with the Rams.

But I am curious on what happens if Simpson sits for 4 years because we haven't seen that. Maybe that scenario is handled differently since there is no real precedent for it.

Interesting hypothetical. But he’s NOT gonna sit for 4 years. There's a small chance of it, cant rule it out entirely, but here's how I'd handicap the Simpson sitting period, and I'd LOVE to hear yours Dz, and everyone elses.

Ty sits:
.
2 years - 40%
3 years- 28%
1 year- 26%
4 years- 5%
5 years- 1%

I'd flip, or slightly adjust, years 1 and 3.

I think there's a greater chance Stafford retires after this season, possibly after a SB win, than the chance of him playing three more seasons.

I'd put year 1 odds at 30%, year 3 at 24%, and keep the other years the same.

I remember differently. Instead of paying the 5th year option they signed him to a 2 year deal that had less guaranteed money but the ability to make more money in those two years. After a year as a starter they signed him to that extension.

So yeah, general consensus, between you and I anyway, is 2 years. Bet the board feels the same generally.

I also think Snead and McVay are ITCHING to get 2 years of Ram team-build under Simpson rookie-deal money, a la Goff '17 and '18..

Having said all this, hope Stafford has the final say and keeps Simpson's (and to a lesser degree Sean's and Les') asses firmly planted.

BTW, I also heavily wavered between 1 and 3 years.

Not exactly....he did sign a "bridge deal" for one year. After his 2nd starting season, he then played well enough to prove his value.
