@flv no matter how you slice it the Jets contract is inferior to the Steelers offer that he walked away from.
I'm not sure why anyone cares if he took less money.
a) it was risk management. it was very unlikely that he was going to overall surpass the numbers had he played healthy throughout that last contract offer.
b) that first contract offer was insulting and it showed that Steelers ownership sees loyalty as a one way street. That contract had more off-ramps than an LA freeway.
c) The Steelers other than for Big Ben have made it clear for years that they aren't willing to commit to stars, won't do big contracts with big lock ins and are more protective of their cap than their players.
d) so what if he took less? I've left jobs or didn't take jobs, one of them a 7+ figure/yr job because the job wasn't okay by me.
If we're going to celebrate WHY people come to the Rams now with McVay, Snead, Demoff, etc, then the lack of those things have to be valid reasons why someone wouldn't STAY with a team.
The Steelers seemed to want to emulate the Pats, but they don't have the same org, don't have Belichick or Brady it all comes off as them being cheap and not committed to players.
Fowler took less to stay another year with the Rams. Seems reasonable that a player would take less overall to play someplace he would be happy.
Bortles is coming in tomorrow. Does anyone think he couldn't get a decent starter salary level of contract for 3 years with Miami who has two guys who can barely run the PS right now???
As
@flv pointed out, he mis-timed his holding out, but the Steelers were super cynical about it. They figured we can get all the best years basically on his rookie contract. They also showed the league that they weren't willing to trade a player who clearly didn't want to be there. Figure it, does ANYONE think the 9ers or some other team wouldn't have done at least a 2nd or maybe a first with some comeback last season prior to the draft? Dude was getting like 400+ touches a year. That's a LOT.
It's one thing to say and understand that the NFL is a business, first, last and always. The Rams are showing that it can be a win-win symbiotic relationship. The Steelers are very much not in that place and it's no wonder that other than Ben, their stars are fleeing...which I find amazing because I still have not forgotten that the Rooneys were so disgusted by Ben's sexual assault situation that they offered him to the Rams for a 3rd round pick and they'd planned to trade up for Bradford. Now, Ben is the "leader", he's the guy and everyone else can pretend that Steelers are the Pats of West PA.
They ain't.
I think James Connor (the rookie RB) did an excellent job in a tough situation, but if he keeps up his production, they'll do the same to him with a contract that's basically year by year and presuming he can play on the FT 3 freaking years in a row because RB contracts are so reduced, then he'll be too old to get a big second contract and even if he's a top RB, he's gonna be on the outside looking in.
Lastly, I don't care how reporters see it. I really don't. Unless someone has played at that elite level in the NFL, they don't know. Veteran players know. It's telling that the Steelers haven't signed anyone, but the exodus has been significant.
Again, we're seeing the opposite happen in Pitt as is happening in LA.
Also, if ANYONE thinks Pitt would have given AD the contract we gave him, they're cracked. Even as a home town kid and 2 time DPOY. No way they do it.
If anything, it shows that if you're a skill player, you DO NOT want to be drafted in the 1st round by the Steelers.
Honestly, I'm looking forward to Cleveland shitstomping the Steelers in Pittsburgh. They're just not a good org anymore.
