Does it matter what we think? The new DC said in his 2nd interview that when asked about the LBer's on the roster (paraphrase), "most of what he needs is already in place". And, now after the draft, we see no ILBers were drafted. So, it seems the Coaching staff thinks they are good enough for now.

What position will Clay Johnson play ??

Btw - you better believe Joe Barry has a big say at the LBer postition!!

McSnead was pretty stoked after there phone conversation with Clay & had them both fired up

Kid played inside at Georgia, looked great in preseason on the outside, I would take a look at him again inside as he strikes me as someone that would move well sideline to sideline.

Wow coach !! I think I might have to reframe my thoughts with all respect.

Your saying GREAT??? How did Reeder look ??

I am hoping the Rams have a diamond in the rough with either Polite or Patrick.

Great being the narrative in preseason as that is how Patrick made the team. Reeder played well in preseason, but mostly on special teams and Patrick was an OLB, whereas Reeder an ILB. Many were not Reeder fans, but according to last year's defensive coaching staff, Reeder was the best option at ILB, that is why my post, I would like to look at Patrick at ILB.

My eyes glaze over with the LBers, because it seems like a battle of the back-ups.....

Reeder put up some solid numbers as an ILB. He came out of nowhere from my view.
This Clay Johnson style reminds me of London Fletcher. Do you know his projected 40 time ? I think speed matters, but this guy takes excellent angles. He might be a special find??

Did Patrick play mainly ILB for the dawgs ? He seems like a tweener that is not fast, strong,or big enough in each area ?? His best spot is probably Inside.

Patrick is a big, instinctive inside backer who plays with good toughness in run support, but lacks speed and is below-average as an open-field tackler. Despite his size and instincts, he had no real impact production at Georgia and might not offer enough help against the pass or on special teams. His off-the-field issues are another strike in his favor, but he's physical and understands how to play, and that could be enough to land a backup role at inside linebacker.

Strengths
  • Old-school inside linebacker who has size and physicality
  • Plays with some edge
  • Instinctive against the run
  • Reads keys for early diagnosis and flow
  • Adequate pace in his lateral flow to the ball
  • Patient to identify runner's lane choice
  • Diligent to prevent being covered up on second level
  • Quick, strong hands punch and shed climbing blockers
  • Shows ability to defeat blocks and create pressure as blitzer
Weaknesses
  • Dependability is a concern due to off-field issues
  • Scouts question his personal character
  • Not enough ink on the stat sheets
  • Has no interceptions, forced fumbles or fumble recoveries during career
  • Misses too many tackles
  • No closing kick when chasing the ball
  • Lacking agility and twitch for open-field finishes
  • Guards grass from zone with just two career passes defensed

The negatives are to many. 15 reps for a guy of his size is a concern. The biggest is his dedication to working out.

I doubt he makes the team

We'll see, but I think he's got a really good shot. I mean he was on our active roster for a minute last season and we lost 2 OLBs, and 2 ILBs from last year's team. If he stays as an edge rusher, he would be in competition for 1 maybe 2 spots with Lawler and Polite. Again, I'd like his chances in that situation.

I'd like Natrez to get a shot back inside myself. I posted one of these earlier though but his current work out routine, and his size now looks like he's going to stay an OLB.

I just heard an interview on one scout that is high on him & wants him to do well. Not sure how that translates on the field though. He is only 22 & if he works hard you never know.
