LA Rams betting WR Josh Reynolds’ contract year is career best

The LA Rams have migrated into new territory for their offense. For the first time in his head coaching career, Sean McVay will not be able to call running back Todd Gurley‘s number on offense. Nor will he be able to call a deep route to wide receiver Brandin Cooks. While the LA Rams sort out who will carry the ball, the team has a receiver on the roster waiting for his chance to shine: Wide receiver Josh Reynolds.

Reynolds is entering his fourth NFL season and has been struggling to move up in the team’s depth chart. At first, he was too inexperienced. Immediately thereafter, the Rams had traded significant assets, a 2019 first and sixth-round picks, acquire WR Branding Cooks. Through it all, Reynolds remained a rotational player, stepping up when both Cooper Kupp was injured in 2018, and when Cooks was injured in 2019.

Now entering his contract year, the LA Rams seem to have gambled that this year will be his career-best. And they may likely be correct. After all, even as the fourth wide receiver on the depth chart, Reynolds has seen action in 1,370 offensive plays, out of a possible 3,100. He’s also been active on special teams as well. During that span, he’s been active in all 48 possible games, and the named starter 11 times. Of 120 targets, he has caught 61 passes for an impressive 832 yards and seven touchdowns.

Look for those career numbers to nearly double this year.

Reynolds is a gazelle. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing in at just under 200-pounds, he is the tallest of the Rams receivers. His long strides chew up the yards quickly, and as such he was hoped to stretch the field as Cooks struggled to remain on the field. He was touted as great depth and insurance for the Rams in training camp, and again when the 2019 NFL season began.

Even if the LA Rams draft a wide receiver in the 2020 NFL Draft (they can and will at virtually any round in this draft), it will take time for a rookie to integrate into the Rams routes and offense. While the Rams and rookies are making introductions, Reynolds will be ready to rip through some defenses.

The Rams offense is undergoing a facelift right now. Gone are Cooks and running back Todd Gurley. In their place, new stars must emerge for the team, and Reynolds is certainly prepared to do so. A fourth-round addition in the 2017 NFL Draft, this is the year that he must show up and claim his NFL spotlight.

He’ll do well for the Rams this year. Not because he has some pent-up stardom that will be unleashed upon the NFL. Not because he is all about that money year. Simply because he is a hard-working player who now has the attention of the offensive coaches who will plan and scheme for his success this year. The Rams will need him to show up in 2020. And he will, in a very big way.

I always thought Josh should have been our second receiver across from Woods. There was no reason to waste draft picks on Watkins and Cooks.

Reynolds has looked good when given opportunities, and Goff seems to really look for him when he is on the field, which you don't often see from a rotational player. He's earned the chance for a bigger role and I expect he will show himself as capable. It will be nice to have a taller target out there. I think, on a team with good WRs, he will always be a WR3, but time will tell on that and I'd love to be proven wrong.

I have to think McVay has some trust in Reynolds. Some thought maybe Reynolds coulda been traded for a position of need since we had so many receivers. But he was a valuable insurance policy. Now he'll get his chance to have a much bigger role.

I have never been a huge fan of JRey. He's talented and I love his catch radius but he's "just a guy" as a wideout. He did allow the Rams to move Cooks, however, which is a big benefit. The guy knows the offense well and can win occasionally to give us a boost.

Rams have 2 drafts to replace Cooks because of JRey too btw, so he's got value there too. Now I don't know that they'll be able to do that in this draft because IMO the big guys (Higgins & Mims) will go before 52. But hopefully they do hit on the position because next year's draft will require a LT and we don't have a round 1 pick.

He's reliable as a backup WR, I'm expecting improvement with contested catches if he wants a new contract with us; he's inconsistent in that department. Something Tee Higgins would excel at assuming we draft him.

50% catch rate (48% last year) playing for a QB who completes 63% of his passes isnt a very flattering stat
I’m not seeing what others see from this cat.
We’ll see if he gets to step up. Wouldn’t be surprised if a rookie takes his snaps.

Rams lost Cooper Kupp in 2018 & the 4th round 2017 selection steps into the void. In 2019 Rams lost #1 wide out Brandon Cook & once again it was Reynolds who stepped up. I would have thought that during both of those events it would have been 2017 top draft pick Gerald:( Everett.

Physically he has the tools. I don't see him locked in mentally like the greats though. I thought he'd be a weapon on 50/50 balls, but he hasn't shown that awareness to track and high point the ball at all. He's not maximizing his length IMO. This is a make or break year for his career, he won't be resigned here with Kupp getting paid IMO.

Of 120 targets, he has caught 61 passes for an impressive 832 yards and seven touchdowns.

Look for those career numbers to nearly double this year.
So he's going to have 122 receptions for 1664 yards this year? Mmm...Kay.
On the other hand he does have the same initials as Jerry Rice so he's got that going for him.

I think we'll learn how much faith the Rams brass has in Reynolds on draft day. If they bypass WR's before Round 5, it will be a big vote of confidence in Reynolds and will be rather telling, as would an extension. Personally, I wouldn't forecast this due to the talent available in this class, but I think we will have a much clearer picture of their plans for Josh after the draft.
