Gotta imagine we go 25/25 with offense and defense. I could see Leveston making the team as the swing guard/right tackle with D.J. Humphries as the backup at left (you kinda forgot him, but that's okay; I think everyone has). That could theoretically leave a spot for Mumpfield, even if Ferguson doesn't go on IR.

But here's my thoughts on the roster crunch:

QB (3) - Stafford*, Garoppolo, Bennett

RB (4) - Williams, Corum, Hunter, Schrader

WR (6) - Nacua, Adams, Atwell, Whittington, Smith, Mumpfield

TE (3) - Higbee, Allen, Ferguson*

OL (9) - A. Jackson, Avila, Shelton, Dotson, Havenstein, Humphries, Limmer, McClendon, Leveston. (Lampkin IR)

(All depending on Stafford's health, of course. Would roll with three if he's not ready to go with another team's cut. If Ferguson needs IR, well, there's plenty of talented tight ends on other rosters to poach. I've just seen enough of Parkinson; I'd love to see a seventh-round pick swap for him, for all I care.)

As for defense, that's tricky. I'd rather keep six DL; Desjuan Johnson has played himself into a roster spot. Wallace at safety/corner/backup STAR gives us a lot of options. Here's how I'd do it defensively:

DL (6) - Turner, Fiske, Ford, Davis, Johnson, Hamilton.

EDGE LB (6) - Verse, Young, Stewart, B. Jackson, Hampton, Thomas

ILB (4) - Landman, Speights, Paul, Dolac

CB (4) - Witherspoon, Forbes, Durant, D. Williams

SAF (5) - Lake, Curl, Kinchens, McCollough, Wallace

(Yeah, see ya, Kendrick, Reeder. Well...I guess Reeder can stay on the practice squad. Kendrick, please go far, far away.)

I think they keep 4 tight ends... OR.. they trade Parkinson, as you suggest. I'd stick with 4, for now.
I think they keep 3 backs. Schrader is fun, but I don't see him sticking and I think if the three backs on the roster are young and healthy, there's no reason for 4.
I think it's Quessenberry over Leveston.. but I'm indexing experience here.. are you seeing actual play on the field that makes you think Leveston is a better player right now? I haven't watched closely enough to be sure.

I feel like Hampton is really on the bubble this year at Edge.. and I think they keep 5 there instead of six
ILBs.. I think they end up keeping 5... and, don't hate me.. Reeder is in there. But.. they may only go with 4
Same safeties
I think they will probably keep 5 corners.. they kept 11 DBs total last year

The math problems I have in mine will be worked out with either one less TE (Maybe Ferguson starts year injured), possibly one less ILB.

One other possible place... Oline. I don't really know how well McClendon has played.. could they go with 8? Quessenberry has played both tackle and guard and has played 84 games in the NFL. McClendon is younger and has shown some promise and has real game experience.

Is there any reason to think the Rams would cut Davis Allen and keep Redman?

Can't think of one, personally.

I think, based on what I've read about him in the practices.. what I've seen in games, primarily his blocking.. that he's ready to step up. He's not a number one, but I think he's a real #2 TE in this league now.

I need to start adding "this is just my opinion" more, because I really don't KNOW anything.. it's just how I feel about it.
My posts that disagree are simply that... I disagree.. I'm not saying someone is wrong, for the most part... at least when it comes to stuff like who is going to make the roster.

I'll put it this way.. Mumpfield looks like an absolute keeper... he's just 22 and is excellent at routes.. and even with his "poor" speed.. he got behind DBs in preseason.

Allen looks like someone it would be a mistake to cut. I don't know if they will, but I feel pretty confident that he would not make it to a practice squad.

I love X Smith.

Maybe that's a better way to put it all.

I get everything you're saying and I have Smith making the team. My only thought would be if somebody has blown them out of the water he's 6th on my WR list and could be the odd man out but I don't honestly see them keeping less than 6 WR so that returner would have to be one of the the other WR's.

I do find it curious that the guy we signed as a free agent is not playing hardly at all which would indicate he's a lock for the team. He's pretty much to my knowledge just a return guy. Just interesting

That seems like a risky move. Allen is more likely to get snagged by another team than Redmond. The former has shown he can handle being in the big leagues, knows how to be a pro. The other hasn’t done anything other than play impressive football vs guys mostly in the same boat as him. I’m not saying Redmond won’t turn out to be as good, if not better than Allen, but he’s so much more of an unknown at this point.

Allen has to make the team. The Rams drafted him late and have invested the time in him. He has yielded some promising moments. I would be disappointed if the Rams gave up on a day 3 pick at a position known to take time to develop when he has had some real game reps and is in a crucial year.

Plus I’ve been rooting for the guy ever since he was drafted, lol.

I think Nick Hampton goes to the practice squad. I believe Schrader, Mumpfield, Lampkin, and Allen would all get poached. Immediately.

I agree. A couple would get scooped up immediately, others would as the season unfolds (injuries/failed expectations).

You can feel the roster improvement by looking at the cuts, that's for damn sure. It's going to be tough. Here's what I'm thinking now for the offense:

QB (3) Stafford, Garoppolo, Bennett.

*= Ferguson to IR potentially, which would open up a roster spot for Mumpfield. Don't like cutting Mumpfield but ST has to be prioritized.

Now there's a chance the Rams don't have Shrader as high as I do in that room, and his cut would enable Mumpfield having a roster spot. But if they cut him he is at risk to be added to another team. Also Shrader fits well in the offense with his pass catching ability if we have Jimmy at QB early on, where he will need dumpoff targets who can RAC.

Pretty much agree with the exception of WR/RB. Doesn't make a lot of sense to keep a 4th RB (as high as you are on him) that likely won't see the field much. But I guess we'll see how McSnead values them. It will definitely will be interesting and some good players will be on the outside looking in .

I had hoped Allen would have taken more of a step up last year when Higbee was out. He had a lot of chances and he wasn’t that impressive. None of the Tight Ends were. I think Redman has looked good so far. I wonder how he compares to Allen’s first year. I think he is ahead of where Allen was at this time last year, but my memory isn’t that great when it comes to watching preseason games.

Allen has glue for hands. So if his blocking has improved and what I saw says yes, then he is in the 53.
