Have to take into to account 2026 cap savings.

I considered that ...

Per OTC, the Rams are projected to have more than $90M of cap space in 2026.
If they move-on from Jonah Jackson, Darious Williams and Colby Parkinson, that baloons to $120M.

If they keep Kupp for 2025; and then release him in the 2026 off-season (just one extra year) the cap implications are $7.5M of Dead-$ and $20M of cap relief. That's pretty much the reverse of releasing him now.

So in 2026, should the Rams release Kupp, Jackson, Williams and Parkinson ... their cap space would be $140M.
I think that would be enough.

You realize that $90M will decrease once they sign FAs this year, draft picks, and have a full 53 under contract in 2026. So that won't be the case once 26' rolls around.

Absolutely but the current $90M does reflect a fairly robust 46 players under contract (I considered that too).

Plus, there are other options to reduce the 2026 cap than the three players that I mentioned. Plus, the NFL salary cap could jump higher than expected. It's clearly an estimate, with assumptions, but the point remains ... the Rams are not looking at Cap Hell in 2026.

I know it's not cap hell, but it would be nice to have a full bank roll to extend Nacua, Turner, and Avilla before they hit FA in 27' along with any potential outside FAs, including a QB (or Staffords new deal) if they go that route. Just not sure it's worth paying for the production and the number of games that Kupp provides.

You don’t trade Kupp to get a (likely) 5th round pick and save $7.5m. IMO McVay is doing it to retool the offense. So I’m looking for a vet FA WR and an early draft pick for a TE/WR.

While I did open this thread with apprehension as if it were true I do check Rams wire before coming here and didn't see a trade story there. Title of this thread should say something like "Possible Kupp trade scenarios."

Although I agree, it's not even a 'Possible' trade scenario since Daniel Jones is a free agent.

How about a thread title of
"Possible Fantasy Trades that involve Kupp but No Boobies or Booty, so it's Not even much of a Fantasy"

Not THAT has a ring-to-it!

No, that's correct. That's kind of my point.

Kupp has a $30M cap hit in 2025. That is way-too-high. However, the majority of that amount will hit the Rams' cap regardless of what they do. By-the-way, the combined 2025 cap hit of Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Jared Verse and Braden Fiske is only about $8M.

According to the cap sites, if Kupp is traded (pre-June), the cap hit is $17.5M; and the savings is $12.5M. From what I have read, the Rams might be willing to eat some money via trade, which would decrease the $12.5M savings amount.

If Kupp is released (pre-June), the cap hit is $22.5M; and the savings is only $7.5M.
That would be a choice of Cooper Kupp in 2025 ... OR ... No Cooper Kupp, and an extra $7.5M.
Personally, I consider Kupp more valuable than a mere $7.5M of additional salary cap.
And then we kick the can down the road to next year and have the exact same discussion. Eat the dead cap now so we can deservedly pay some upcoming second contracts for the future stars in the making currently on our team. I don't want the Rams to eventually have to eat Kupp and Stafford dead cap at the same time and risk possibly extending our guys in the near future. These 2nd contracts are coming faster than you expect, prepare now.

It's not the 'same discussion' next year.

If the Rams release Kupp now, the Dead-$ is $22.6M. The cap savings is only $7.5M.

If the Rams release Kupp one year from now, the Dead-$ is only $7.5M. The cap savings is $20M.

That's a huge difference.

Yeah I have to say that if Snead/McVay trade for someone who's currently a UFA, I would start to question their mental state.
