Pretty telling that Rivers was called up instead of Hunter dressing.
So it goes.
If you cant pass block you won't play much as a RB with Mcvay.....I keep thinking back to why an average or slightly below average RB like Sony Michel getting snaps is because he was excellent in pass pro. He saved Stafford more than once on key passes to Kupp down the stretch.

I was unimpressed with Hunter in preseason. Over 3 games, he had 33 att for 110 yds, so only 3.33 avg. He had 2 carries for 11 yards each... otherwise he mostly got stuffed.

I didn't sense he had vision or an understanding of where to make cuts. Didn't get much after contact, either.

Hope he makes huge strides by next year. But in preseason this year, I didn't think he looked at all ready to contribute. Some guys need an entire offseason with the team before the light turns on.

It's a bad look for him. There's a role for him even if pass pro was the only thing he struggled with (albeit a small small role)... so it likely seems it's a combo of things (ST value, assignment sound).

Still, always worth a look-see after an offseason in the program.

Agree.
He can always chase down guys on kick coverage, or be a returner himself on kickoffs. It helped Xman stick around before finally being integrated into the passing game.

No, it’s more than just blitz pickups.

There’s NO reason to Rush RB Hunter.Kyren got his carries this week.Against Tampa Bay Kyren got 70 plus % of the carries & snaps.

Rivers is a added bonus & using Xaiver Smith was a bonus for hard work. These 2 players performed well.

No wiggle, lateral ability.

It was evident in pre season that he was a bad draft pick.

Les’ Auburn bias.

WOW - just WOW.Need Blue Font.

Might as well add The Rams mid season trade to that list as well.
I’ll add blue font 2

Another possibility that has sidelined other young players under McVay’s watch is “a lack of a sense of urgency.”
He’s used these words in the past and those are code for the dog house in McVay language.

To be fair he hasn’t commented on Hunter in that way. Still, to not even crack ST’s or RB3 active duty is not encouraging.

Williams was at least active and had carries... so did Corum.

So not really, not yet at least.
Kyren missed all of preseason with a broken foot, then missed game due to a sprained ankle. So yeah, not the same thing at all.....
That said, Hunter was initially getting snaps on ST, but those have gone to Rivers. Lack of effort? Minor injury?

Fairly ridiculous if you ask me. Without looking, I'd guess all RB's drafted anywhere near Hunter have had carries. RB's translate fairly well to the NFL as rookies. No reason he was not activated last week and finished the blow out with carries.
There is 1 big reason Hunter hasnt yet seen the field, pass protection. We see it every week, KW crosses the formation to make a block. McVay isnt going to tip his hand with personnel. As much as we all want to see Hunter on the field, none of us want to see Stafford take any unnecessary hits.

Hunter is most likely injury insurance, and possibly a replacement for Kyren midway through his extension depending on how that all goes. Mostly depth, but RBs obviously take a beating.

Ferguson is a future starter, and maybe a future star.

Stewart is depth and possibly a replacement for Byron young if we let him walk.

Konata and Hamilton are depth, already playing.

All in all, a really solid draft.

For years, McVay has stressed the importance of the 48-gameday-active players needing to have a role.

Disagree with that if you want but McVay has frequently discussed Roster Build and Game-day roster.
It's not as simple as the best-53 ... or the best 48 on Sunday ... it's the best team ... According to Sean McVay.

3rd active RB on game-day needs to contribute on Special Teams. Seems clear that Rivers is valued there.

Blitz-pick-up is probably also a key factor.

Finally, health at RB ... neither Williams, nor Corum have missed a game thus far in 2025.

Put all that together, and I'm guessing that McVay has not ... Yet ... seen a role for Hunter on gameday.

Unfortunately (maybe fortunately for some here) Running Backs get injured.

Rivers looked like a man on a mission on his kick returns.
