“When we started having trouble, we didn’t know what to do,” Verse said. “Like some of us on the defense, some, you know, I’m going to take full blame, too. Like, there were a couple of times I’m like, but they’re running the other way. Like, I don’t know what to do. I can’t chase. Like I’m not that fast. I can’t chase him on the backside. What do I do? So when we had some troubles, we just kind of like mentally shut down.”

I heard that. Kind of alarming. Now we might be taking Verse a bit out of context, but my sense is that the Rams are missing some level of leadership, both on the field, and in the coaching, on the defensive side of the ball.

Not naming names, but we could really use an Aaron Donald type player that takes it up a notch when it matters. Seemed to be missing this year, and that was disappointing.

Verse just being honest. Nothing wrong with that. Anyone alarmed by it might want to think back to the last time they got their asses beat when strapped up.

He's got shit to work on too. Like some more variety in rush moves. But I think he's gonna be just fine.

On the one hand, it could be he's expressing more of a feeling of helplessness than a lack of knowledge of assignment. Duties of the backside edge on runs away are something like, stay at home to protect against reverses and play action boots, right? (link)

On the other hand, for as much as contain was blown on his side his rookie year, it could be a him thing

ike some of us on the defense, some, you know, I’m going to take full blame, too.

If someone is taking "full blame", along with other people, are they really taking full blame?

He's not saying it as if there are other people taking blame with him. He's describing events and saying he did stuff wrong along with others and he's taking the blame for it too. It's a further step not an inclusive comment.

Just a quick FYI and suggestion to anyone interested.

This topic and what Verse said was discussed in another thread titled "Jared Verse on the Pivot Podcast" posted six days ago. That thread is currently at the bottom of page 1 of Rams NFL Talk but will likely be pushed to the top of page 2 when a new thread is added.

My "Suggestion" (respectfully offered to any one interested) would be to actually invest the time to listen to the full podcast. In my opinion, Verse comes across well. He seems motivated and focused; and genuinely disappointed in how the Rams season ended ... which, personally is what I would prefer and hope.

Below is my comment from that thread of last week:
"I just sat through the 42 minutes, 35 seconds interview ... and ... have absolutely NO PROBLEM with anything Verse said. If anything, it makes me feel even stronger and better about the Rams' star-Edge player.

If anyone wants to disagree that is fine but if someone disagrees based solely on the Cameron Dasilva RamsWire article, or the few quotes noted in it (and in some of the above posts) then I think that person has totally missed-the-boat because that is out-of-context.

If anything, Verse is suggesting some over-confidence and some mental break-downs in coverage ... and anyone who watched (and re-watched) the game, should know there were some breakdowns in coverage."

So Verse might spend part of the off season training with Micah Parsons in Dallas this off season. There is actually a former player and HOFer that lives in the area that I believe could help Verse hone his craft this off season and take his game to the next level. Call me crazy but Charles Haley had some of the greatest inside counter rush moves I ever saw. If Verse could add that to his game instead of the constant running the arc and bull rush he would be unstoppable. I hope they meet up and Verse picks his brain.

Haley would be nice but working with Parsons and Myles Garrett while also working out with and getting input from Aaron Donald seems like a great idea to me.
