When will the Rams learn?

At this point they probably had no choice but to give in to JR's demands.

Have to see the details but this seems like another market jumping contract. He better stay healthy. He also better ball out.

What about Kupp?

It doesn't seem good for him to stay a Ram.

Ramsey is one of the top three players on the team and you must pay your best players in order to keep them.

We've got a lot of depth at receiver, and it's another amazing draft class at receiver next year, so I'm fine with trading Woods. The main problem is inside linebacker and offensive line; I could see us losing up to three starting offensive linemen (if they cut Havenstein, if Whit retires after this year, and if Blythe asks for more money than we can pay).

Now, I can see us internally replacing the tackle positions with Evans and Edwards (with Noteboom potentially sliding to a tackle spot), we could have depth with Brewer potentially coming back next year, along with Anchrum, Allen, and Shelton...but I won't count on it until we show out this season. Fortunately, there should be quite a few good young centers coming out of the class.

As for inside linebacker, I regard it as the weakest position right now, even with the recent signing of Hollins. We're likely losing Kiser and Howard next year (I'm not totally sure about Young's contract status, and while I think that Howard is a RFA this year, I could be wrong about him as well). I do not trust Reeder at all. That's why I want someone like Nick Bolton out of Mizzou or Charles Snowden out of Virginia.

Sorry, forgot about Reynolds in my first post. I think he leaves for a better opportunity as well.

Cant disagree with ya, well said. Could care less about Reynolds, never been a fan. As for online, Im not sure or convinced that our backups now can be replacements. I think we need FA to get some players in, or spend a high draft pick on one or two. LB the same, these are the areas I worry about when we have no money.

Just glad we aren't gonna lose him and those picks we invested. What a relief. (y)
Funny thing is we never were. Snead mentioned having a framework of a deal in place months ago but the media knew that creating a "jalen and the Rams are far apart" narrative gets more clicks lol.

This is the NFL. All teams fall prey to this, it comes down to keeping the right guys.
The Pats did similar thing at the beginning of their run, as time went on they were able to play the game of underpaying guys, and of course cheating.

Extension so not this year starts after current contract ends
Might give him bonus money this yr in place of some of his salary, in order to open up cap room. He was already counting $13M this year.

Could turn 10M into bonus and spread that out over his new deal, opening up 8M in cap room.

$3M in salary plus $2M in prorated bonus.

$13M cap number becomes $5M or something in that area.

Now money is there for Kupp.

The team is getting top heavy IMO....they could be in danger of toppling.

Anyone else besides me expecting Aaron and Jalen to make Sunday night one of their highlight reel specials?

Everett and JJ are playing their final season with the Rams and quite possibly Kupp too but to me it is worth it to have Ramsey locked up.

That's true about the offensive line. I can see us drafting a center in the second round to replace Blythe and push Allen/Shelton. But I have faith in Evans and Edwards when it comes to stepping in and playing well.

I'm laughing because the media is shocked. Like I've been posting it was clear that the Rams consider Jalen the AD of the secondary and this signing proves it. The media is shocked because they can't figure out how it can be. It's easy to see if you know how to view the cap. Right now the Rams are carrying a massive deadcap of $34M. But in 2021 that figure drops to $8.5M adding $25.5 M back into the cap. So as I've said, the Rams will use this year's $13M in cap hit to bridge into next year. The will then probably substitute the deadcap of $21M from Cooks for Jalen's contract. Now release Havenstein and Whitworth and they have enough money to sign Kupp and Floyd in similarly strutured contracts.

The Rams will then have to decide between Everett and Ebukam and IMO Samson is the higher priority. They have backstopped both players with Hopkins and Hollins respectively so even if they lose both they already have their replacements. I think they will make efforts to keep both but the market value of these guys makes it unlikely that they can only afford one. Ebukam is a fulltime player, while Everett is a parttime player so it would seem Ebukam is the higher priority IMO.

Anyway as I've been saying the Cap is legal fiction nothing more.

Sorry I didn't see this thread when I wrote mine.

This is good news. Does anyone really want to loose the best CB in the league to FA? He is the best at arguably the most important position on defense

2 years from now, when Jalen, Jared and Aaron are all still in their prime, these contracts will be fine and our drafting should still be good, plus we will have something we have learned to live without: 1st round picks.

Good drafting means we can lock these guys up and withstand the fallout. As Rams fans, for most of our history we have not drafted well, not developed talent well, not found late round UDFA gems, not been smart with our cap space and have made poor FA acquisitions. Under Snead, Demoff and McVay, we have done all three pretty well, especially at drafting and developing talent.

Under any previous Rams regime, yes, these contracts would likely topple us and keep us in the basement. So I totally get the apprehension, but I believe we are going to be fine and have some premier talent at DT, DB, QB and WR for years to come. If we can balance that with average OL and LB play, we should be regular contenders.
