I quit living there in 70’s, but drove tour trips through there up till 2009.When was the last time you were here, ... in the 70's ?
Now quit derailing my school house thread, you bastids! Let’s explore the joys of a asbestos and lead paint cleanup!
You need to quit showing me these Cali sunsets..
Now if I have sons that really want to get involved, then it may be doable, but not sure about tackling that alone. Just curious if the fallout shelter is suitable for a tornado shelter? It is Kansas after all.Hills, trees, lakes, fields... those are GREAT views too.
My wife and I talk about retirement, and usually it involves water.
But; give me land and space. Water is great, I will take mountain and hillside views just as well. @SWAdude posted a video of flying a radio controlled plane... what caught my eye was the hills in his video. Gorgeous. Sign me up for that.
My concern with this property @Loyal is the work. It really looks like a LOT of work. And, it could contain surprises that are painful. @JonRam99 captured the concerns pretty well. Are you at a place in your life this is what you want to deal with, while living there? The financial surprises too.
As I’ve gotten older, the less projects the better. This is the phase of my life to enjoy myself. So... it needs to fit your place in life.
If you wanted me to say what I would do; this property would be a big no-go. But... it is super cool and I get the appeal. The work could be fun, particularly if young, or early retired.. But... Could get old real quick, too. That’s what I would fear.
regarding the roof, my sisters husband and a friend did a roof like the one you describe, they did it by use of rubber squares heat glued together, if you look into this you can find someone in your area that does this work. If you have questions feel free to ask, good luckNo one ever said I was normal. Have any of bought a strange building to live in as a home? If so, what was it?
Near where I live, a small elementary school is being lived in as a single family home. My brother in law went
to kindergarten there in like 1969 or so. It’s built with red brick concrete and cinder block on one floor.. There is an attached three car garage...to the small auditorium/gym. Propane heat/central ac. The school was opened in 1947 and so I am concerned whether the power system is grounded and whether it’s a septic system for sewer. I see three pronged industrial plugs in the basement, but sometimes that doesn’t mean anything. Also, the flat roof over the gym probably will need to be done in the near future, which won’t be cheap to do. Double pane windows, 4 bedrooms and 4 baths...Almost 3 acres of property and the property overall is well taken care of...
They placed it on the market for $250,000in late 2020 and took it off the market in Jan 2021. I imagine that with COVID-19 and a assessed tax property value being $79,500, they didn’t have too many people interested. They also put in the description that it would take more than a million dollars to build this place today, which I don’t doubt. But then the use of it was as a school and not as a single family home. There are no comparables in the area, of course.
I have been inside this place a while ago and I forget why I was there....maybe an auction? But what I always loved was that gym. It has a stage at one end and a basketball half court at the other!
Have any of you ever bought a strange building to live in as a home?

Well, my wife had reason to visit the property a few weeks ago because of a garage sale going on there, and she spoke to one of the current owners of the property. This person was an adult child of the original owners who are deceased (parents). Supposedly there is a potential buyer who is seeking a loan, but hasn’t got it yet. It’s a private sale if so….My wife gave he4 one of our business cards in case the deal falls through, which is very possible.Loyal:
Did you move-ahead on this?
I just got home from a long walk and crashed on the couch. Put on a channel called Destination America and started to watch a show titled You Live in What?
All about people that have re-purposed different old buildings (and even a ferry) into homes. Does not follow the construction but walks the viewers through what was done. Just enjoyed the hell out of it. Some people are so freaking creative. One building was a re-worked old school house built in the 1870s and unused since the 1920s. It was re-purposed about 30 years ago.
Reminded me of this thread; and I had to find it and ask what happened. Hope you are OK with that.
