No one ever said I was normal. Have any of bought a strange building to live in as a home? If so, what was it?

Near where I live, a small elementary school is being lived in as a single family home. My brother in law went
to kindergarten there in like 1969 or so. It’s built with red brick concrete and cinder block on one floor.. There is an attached three car garage...to the small auditorium/gym. Propane heat/central ac. The school was opened in 1947 and so I am concerned whether the power system is grounded and whether it’s a septic system for sewer. I see three pronged industrial plugs in the basement, but sometimes that doesn’t mean anything. Also, the flat roof over the gym probably will need to be done in the near future, which won’t be cheap to do. Double pane windows, 4 bedrooms and 4 baths...Almost 3 acres of property and the property overall is well taken care of...

They placed it on the market for $250,000in late 2020 and took it off the market in Jan 2021. I imagine that with COVID-19 and a assessed tax property value being $79,500, they didn’t have too many people interested. They also put in the description that it would take more than a million dollars to build this place today, which I don’t doubt. But then the use of it was as a school and not as a single family home. There are no comparables in the area, of course.

I have been inside this place a while ago and I forget why I was there....maybe an auction? But what I always loved was that gym. It has a stage at one end and a basketball half court at the other!

Have any of you ever bought a strange building to live in as a home?

Don’t usually open threads like this but I am glad I did. Sounds like it could be tremendous fun, especially if you have the time and skill to make it work.

Can’t offer any first hand feedback or advice but if you move forward, hope you provide some updates and pictures.

That’s really cool; and it looks like so much fun. You could just enjoy it; or do so much with it, if inclined.

I am sorry to give you bad news. Spoke with my wife, and we are going to offer $191,000.

Looks like an endeavor, is your family is up for it?
We’ll see...Not for sure they want to sell anyway, but we’ll talk to them....Maybe ask friends to help. Come to think of it,how well do you paint? Lol

That looks like a big project. Hopefully you are a jack of all trades... or... you have plenty of money to get things fixed and put together the way you want them.

You also better have a GIANT lawn mower.

It is cool though.

That is massive! Gym is cool. So is the shop.

What would it take to heat that? I see large gas tanks, and a couple outside units.

Just think of the big screen TV you can put in the gym... convert it to a home theater with few bowling lanes .

I don't know yet. I imagine that some of the building's heat can be shut off or vents closed? I am pretty sure the central AC is just on one part of the structure. AC wasn't that common for buildings of this era...

I'd worry about the cell service and wifi, concrete walls are a beyotch on that stuff.
Otherwise, that would be freakin cool!!
I'd be wanting to shell out some bread for a golf simulator for that gym area!!
