I'd love for the Rams to re-sign him, as long as it isn't top 5 wr money. $11mil a year for 5 years front loaded is good with me. I'd love to keep Watkins, Woods and Kupp together for awhile, they are all studs.

By keeping Sammy the Rams can keep him away from division rivals. The main threat would come from the Whiners who have both the need and the money to go after Sammy. Nothing worse than losing him to the up and coming Whiners

This is what I am thinking. I remember years ago, Charle Young was on pace to be a Hall of Fame tight end with the Eagles. The Rams picked him up from '77-79 but didn't use him much, then he went on to finish a fairly productive career with the Whiners and Pigeons. I never got that.

I'd hate to see something like that happen with Sammy. He does seem to brood a lot, but he adds value to this offense. Hopefully he wants to stay and we figure this thing out. If not? Reynolds, Thomas, Cooper....I will be able to cope, somehow.

The Rams have a top notch receiving corps for the first time since Bruce & Holt, ... with great depth, i'm not about to sit still and watch us throw that away before they even let Watkins have a full off-season to improve his skill set. We have a lot of quality targets now, shouldn't matter that Sammy isn't getting the ball as often so long as he helps open up the others and relieves pressure from the opposition stacking the box on Gurley. We don't need to 'fix' what ain't broken. Sign him !

I think the question of signing him comes down to what he's expecting. If he wants #1 money he will hit the market, some desperate team will overpay him (see Britt for FA effect lol), and he'll leave. Only way to stop that is to franchise him, because the Rams won't pay him top money in a big contract given what they have seen this year.

Sammy still doesn't have this offense down cold. In Sunday's game that blitz where Goff threw to him as hot and they weren't on the same page leads me to believe that Watkins missed the read. A small thing, but NOT a small thing to McVay. I guarantee you that.

Now the franchise tag might work with him simply because they can keep him around one more year while they reload the defense/secondary in this draft. And he might get better next year after another camp and if so then the Rams can sign him after seeing him dominate on the field.

Again, though, if he hits FA he is gone. IMO.

As amazing as this season has been, the Goff trade up, McVay hire and all the other moves made weren’t meant for this year. 2017 means basically nothing towards the long run if the players we acquire don’t stick around. Watkins has been huge for us. I think he has a big year in 2018. Those 8 touchdowns don’t just come from anyone.

Guys do you really think Tavon will be back next year? No way in hell unless he takes a serious pay cut. That money we aren’t missing this season will be put to Sammy and a little more and we can lock him up from money we are already spending. Plus we’ll have 50 mill or so for Donald, other FA’s and the draft class. We are sitting good, very good.

Ps from reading interviews it doesn’t sound like money is a priority with Sammy. Yes it’s nice but playoffs, culture, location, and team leadership seem to be a welcomed breath of fresh air for him. I think he stays for just under #1 WR money which I’ll take!

I'm good with them doing what you suggest. Tavon's definitely gone, he needs to be in an offense that isn't as dependent on route discipline. And yeah that money is better served if they can lock Sammy up for something both sides are good with. If it happens that way, I'm good to go because I want a defense-heavy draft.

IF Sammy leaves, I guess I am ok. I mean, he had had all season to prove he is a #1--and mostly likely didnt prove that; though I may be wrong....and, I still want him back!.But, I just don’t see it with the economics and what he will want….but, if we get him at $10 mill, it may be worth it considering the 8 TDs, and the fact that maybe we don’t beat the 49ers, or Dallas, and there are a handful of other games where we go nowhere with Reynolds or M Thomas in his place.

Without Sammy, I believe our entire offense would look different.
He keeps the best corner and safeties distracted, and that is very valuable.

So, even at a 1 year rental of a 2nd rounder I am ok. He is indispensable to this 2017 Ram team. 2018, wellmaybe M. Thomas or Reynolds step up….Reynolds ( I don’t think so) but Thomas has some skills, and looks like a gamer…which I think Sammy is too.

I know we talk a lot about this Sammy thing....but, maybe we don't even beat the TItans without his sweet 3 yard catch for a TD.....and that 3rd down against Dallas that let us get that last FG....who else catches that one.
Sorry, but I at least am nowhere near being ok with losing Sammy Watkins. Yeah, let's let one of the key players who dictates match ups in the D walk. Let's find out if our passing game is as good without our only serious downfield threat and most physical receiver. We can replace him, no problem...

Not how I would run this franchise and I doubt it's how McVay and Snead will.

I truly hope we can keep Sammy...he does more for this team than the stat sheet shows, he’s been a good blocker, and the most important part is he takes away the teams best corner, leaving our deep receiving vote with better matchups. Our corps isn’t the fastest, so having a legit deep threat who is also a threat in the red-zone, on screen plays, and even blocking downfield is invaluable.

I think Sammy will want to stay. He's finally on a winning team, finally healthy, and he's only going to get better as this team gets better. He's got a coach who knows how to get him open, a QB that can feed him the ball, and a running back who can keep defenses honest.

Why leave when he finally got what he was looking for.

^^^^This in spades!!!^^^^^
From what I can gather he's sick and tired of the losing and now he is on a WINNER!!! And a young winner at that! Sure he could go somewhere else and be The Man, but that doesn't necessarily equate to being a consistent winner at all.
I am hoping that the culture and team work and espirit de corps of this young and upwardly mobile Rams team will motivate talented players like Watkins to stay even if they do not get every dollar they would like to have.
I am always impressed by the interviews of former NFL stars and HOFers. When asked what they remember most about their careers it's almost never their records or personal accomplishments but the Super Bowl trophies and championships they garnered.

I gotta believe that players like Watkins and Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley are paying attention. Would love for each of them to sit down and listen to a former player who played their same position talk about what really matters and what they will remember long after they have retired will be the winning and championships. All of the other stuff looks decent in a trophy case but being a Super Bowl champion will be your fondest memory.

I have said all that to say this, Let's hope that Sammy stays a Rammie!!!!

Still a great trade. Even is Sammy leaves, we'll get a 3rd round comp pick + Gaines is hurt... yet again.

The highest they could get for him is a third. His numbers may dictate a fourth round pick. He is more to the team than his stats show.

The problem is that in draft capital next year's pick drops a round in value. So, even if the Rams got a third for Sammy in the 2019 draft, it would be more like a fourth or fifth in value when you consider the Rams traded a second round pick to acquire him in 2017.

That's bad value. The only way to get full value out of that trade is if they can retain Sammy for the next few years. Otherwise that trade was a long-term loss.

If they win the Super bowl this year, then even if he leaves that made the trade more worthwhile.

If Sammy's price tag is realistic, I'd like to keep him.

Kind of off topic. Anyone else think the Sammy td from this last week was an option route in which Sammy simply beats his man and Goff puts it in him?

Reason I ask is because Goff threw a great fade pass in college yet i hardly see the team attempt them. Are defenses taking that away? Leaving those slants wide open?

Also that play needs to be in the third and short arsenal. Sammys hands are so strong

It's harder to do the fade because if a player starts in the slot, the defense shades him HARD outside, so the play and instant separation is inside.

If a DB is gonna play it straight up, then the fade is there, but the trend is to force the play inside and hope the traffic defeats the play as much as coverage.

And it's why accurate QBs are feasting in it, because with the right WR/QB combo, the DB takes himself out of the play on hard outside coverage.

I hope Mcvay and his culture does this for a lot of guys.

I'm pretty sure snead said franchising Sammy is an option they may have to use. He said this after the trade was announced and was asked about the risk with Sammy only having 1 year left on his contract.

We need to keep Sammy Watkins.

If it comes down to shedding another contract, like Austin, to do it... we will.

Nah. The trade helped us get to 11-4 and win the division. Trade was worth it on that alone.
