Well, the Dodgers have kind of bought championships since there is no cap and they spend a ridiculous amount compared to other teams when you take into account the deferral loophole they are using.
Fans of 29 other teams would love to see their team do that. I remember when George Steinbrenner had the Yankees winning titles. Everyone said they're buying championships. I also remember when I wished my team would do that.

Agreed not bad as long as the players stay hungry yet humble
Pretty sure they're hungry. I believe only 4 players on the team today was with them in 2021. Stafford, Jackson. Shelton and Higbee. Jackson was Whitworth's backup. Higbee was out with an injury. So I imagine the rest of the guys are pretty hungry for a ring.

Well, many are not capable, and it's absurd there is a professional sport where some teams have a $75M payroll, while others have a $350M payroll, and then are still deferring 100's of millions more to land top players.

Now, a high payroll is no guarantee... see the Mets, but the competitive balance is just not present in baseball. And yes, I realize some owners won't spend, aka Pittsburgh. However, even if they spent as much as they could, they still couldn't afford half of what the top teams spend.

So baseball is kind of a joke.

so when the rams win it all this year that is illegitimate too right?

gimme a break...

dodgers go get good players.. rams go get good players...

Why would the Rams or ANY NFL Teams Title EVER be illegitimate??? No single team can spend a penny more than any other team.

The Dodgers, however, have won 2 consecutive ILLEGITIMATE Titles. When the Dodgers win a Title without paying a Luxury Tax THAT will be a Legitimate Title.

These last 2 with Shohei? Completely illegitimate.

ya they should have never went out and got shohei... cuz no one else was allowed to...

that's pretty illegitimate... sux no other owner has any money...

It's not that being a favorite is a bad thing. It's just that there's a lot to live up to when you are the favorite. Lots of pressure. We'll see if it makes coal into diamonds. Very hopeful that we end up shining like one.

As for the whole baseball convo? Cardinals fan here saying that we need a cap - both ceiling and floor (and I get pissed when teams purposely don't spend and treat their professional team as a farm system. Shit like that turns me off as a fan.) to level the playing field. I think that a lot of what MLB's proposing (no more high school kids, but only two years in college needed to go pro; an international draft with the minimum age of eighteen eligible for that draft to stave off corruption) are good ideas. Personally, I think that lowering the draft to twelve rounds is a mistake (I think that twenty rounds are perfectly fine.), but I could live with it, especially with an international draft. I think that there should definitely be another minor league team for each club; it makes no sense not to implement it for more players to have a salary.

The players union have to agree to all of that, though. That's what it all comes down to: will the players agree? I think they have a point with thirty-or-older players that start their career with a club before they earn arbitration should go to free agency earlier (case in point being our closer, Riley O'Brien, who is already thirty-one, and won't be eligible for arbitration until he's thirty-three, which I absolutely don't agree with as a person who feels players should earn as much money in their limited time playing as they can), but they need to accept a cap ceiling. The players being paid the most are the ones being affected, and they (namely Bryce Harper) are screwing over all of the other players (the ones who aren't making a hundred million dollars or so) in the process by refusing a lot of the good of what the MLB clubs are offering.

Last I checked we are under the cap... a cap that every team has to abide by. How hard is that to understand?

Let's play this out.

Let's say the Rams are still in STL. There is no cap. Kronke doesn't own the Rams.

The Rams payroll is $300M
Teams like the Giants, Cowboys, Bears, & Eagles have payrolls north of $500M.

Bill Gates owns the Seahawks. Elon Musk owns the Niners. Their payrolls are over $900M.

The Rams make the playoffs once in 10 years. They never sniff winning the division.

You're cool with that scenario as a Rams fan?

what are you talking about philly... yes the rams alleged payroll is 300 million... in your scenario...

shitty owners don't fork out money... they just look at profit...

are we illegitimate because we do?

that's my whole argument... OWNERS DO WHAT THEY THINK IS BEST FOR THIER DECISION/CHOICE....

because your owner has no incentive to win it all... why is the owner that does or the team that does called illegitimate?

it's a shitty take...

every owner has the capital to go all out...

but not all do..

sorry your shitty owner is one of the ones who won't...

again...

There are different levels of money when it comes to owners. Some have a lot more than others - the difference between hundreds-of-millionaires and multi-billionaires. Some owners are a conglomerate of different owners/businesses, all with ridiculous amounts of money who can outbid everyone (i.e., the Dodgers). Compare that to some of the less wealthy teams out there, and that's a seriously unbalanced playing field.

Yes, every team has the money to go all out, but there's very few teams who can outspend everyone, who can give their players hundreds of millions of dollars.

It's not a matter of "will" or "won't"; it's about being fair to all teams and encouraging parity. Every team in North American professional sports has a salary cap for a reason (hockey went into a lockout over the whole non-salary cap thing). Baseball needs both a cap ceiling and floor. The Dodgers shouldn't have a problem with such a thing; they have arguably the best prospect pool in the Majors. Why complain about a cap and floor if you have a damn good farm system with young players who can probably step in without any fuss?

At least the Rams have a salary cap to contend with and still win with their young players. Compare that to the 69ers back in the day with their owner being rich and paying players under the table. Is that too much different of "taking every advantage you have"?

So, I ask you: why are you so afraid of baseball having parity if you have all of those great young prospects ready for the Majors in a few circumstances? Why are you insistent on having your cake and eating all of it, too?

How many years have we not had a snowball's chance in hell of mattering. So yeah, I see no reason to be all timid and shit with expectations. This team is stacked and I'm enjoying it greatly.

There is no doubt the Rams have the best NFL roster on paper. But there’s no shame in being greedy if you’ve been a Rams fan for 50+ years to temper any doubts about them winning another Super Bowl. So with that said, let’s get Donald, find a backup LT that’s worth a damn and keep Jimmy G-string on speed dial just in case.

I agree with the take of baseball not having an even playing field makes it a joke vs football. Some MLB teams are basically farm teams and their whole roster budget couldn't even afford one Dodgers star player.

Agreed.

I remember how I felt in 2008 after the Rams drafted Chris Long at #2 overall. I remember thinking, "if he turns out to be a key piece, maybe we have a chance to have a respectable season with 6 wins. 8-8 is still probably too much to ask for."

We went from 3-13 in 2007 to 2-14 in 2008, by the way.

Low expectations sucks rocks.

Overjoyed to be among the contenders. Even better to be the preseason favorite. Looking forward to another crazy ride.

Yeah... a salary cap is absolutely necessary for a professional sports league to have parity. I don't watch baseball so I don't have an educated opinion on the matter but it would be like watching Nascar and the wealthiest teams can afford a 750 HP car vs all the other teams only being able to afford a 500 HP car. It's a terrible analogy but the point is you would never get a fair result based on strategy/talent/effort.

Dude, some markets just don't generate the revenue to support a $400M payroll, and not all owners are a Stan Kronke let alone a Bill Gates or some other mega rich guy. Learn economics.

Pittsburgh has a population of 300K, maybe 1.5M in the their entire market.

Compare that to LA or NY, or even Philly. Philly has a population of 1.6M, and the TV market of probably 12M - 15M or so. They can sell advertising at a much higher number than Pittsburgh can or KC or STL. When talking about NYC & LA, they dwarf Philly's market.

That is why a cap is needed. I would think by now the NFL has proven the salary cap is the way to create a level playing field

If you are so confident in the Dodgers front office, why do you fear a salary cap?

And yes the Dodgers have always been competitive, but right now the playing field is so slanted in their favor its hysterical. Their best players were bought. It's as simple as that.
