Given we have Davis Allen and could draft a TE4 on the cheap, I find it surprising.

See Higbee as no more than the 3rd TE; and a $4M cap hit for a third-TE seems a little high.

Not true, extensions don’t work the way people seem to think. We can extend both McDuffie and Stafford and manipulate their contracts in a way that actually INCREASES the cap space for this off-season.
Not to mention, we could also restructure Davante Adams and Alaric Jackson and cut Darious Williams which will open up a ton of cap space.
Not saying that Higs isn't showing some mileage, but in all fairness, he was out for a long stretch due mostly to that shot in the knee by that puke Kerby Joseph during the Lions playoff game in '24.
Yeah, it's probably an incentive laden contract ......... like you have to be on the game day active roster to get paid, though.

They did have five TEs on their playoff roster (with Nick Vannett as the fifth) last year.

We don’t know details yet. Just that is a “maximum” amount - so it’s gonna be a lower base. What if it’s 2.5M with some unlikely incentives?
