Hard to argue with Robert Quinn as a '32-team free agent'

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Earlier Thursday on ESPN Insider, Mark Dominik, our resident front office insider, took on an interesting project in which he looked around the league and chose a group of players whom he believes would be coveted by every team in the NFL if they were to hit the open market.
The project comes with a few important variables. As Dominik pointed out, players would have to be considered at the rate they would command in free agency, they can't have any character red flags, and they have to be a scheme fit for any team (which might complicate things the most).
While some teams have multiple representatives on the list and others have none, there is one member of the St. Louis Rams making an appearance: defensive end Robert Quinn.
Dominik points out that teams can never have enough pass rushers and says Quinn "turns the corner as well as any edge rusher in the league." It's hard to argue that if Quinn were to hit the open market that there'd be a team in the league that wouldn't be interested in his services.
Quinn's numbers ticked down some in 2014, dropping from 19 sacks in 2013 to 10.5 last year. But there's still little doubt that Quinn is among the most dangerous pass rushers in the league. The Rams signed him to a lucrative extension that will keep him with the team through the 2019 season, meaning he won't be available anytime soon, but he'd almost certainly be able to transition to a stand-up edge rusher position in a 3-4 if the team ever changed schemes.
Looking at the Rams' roster, Quinn is the only clear cut candidate to make such a list. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald is quickly becoming a star, but Dominik used him as the example of a player who wouldn't necessarily qualify as a scheme fit in every system. He's best used as a penetrating 3-technique in a 4-3 defense but his fit in a 3-4 is a bit harder to find. Still, he's talented enough that a team might consider chasing him and finding a way to make it work.
Either way, neither Quinn nor Donald will be hitting the free-agent market anytime soon. And the sooner the Rams add more players who could land on a list like this, the sooner they can become legitimate contenders.
