After a long career as a coach, Jeff Fisher may soon begin a new career as a broadcaster.

Michael McCarthy of Sporting News reports that FOX is talking to Fisher about having him work as an analyst either in the booth or in the pregame studio this season.

FOX is in its first year as the home of Thursday Night Football and maintains its Sunday afternoon coverage of NFC games. FOX’s top team, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, will handle Thursday nights but may take some Sunday afternoons off.

In his career coaching the Houston/Tennessee Oilers/Titans and St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, Fisher went 173-165-1 in the regular season and 5-6 in the postseason. His 165 regular season losses are tied for the most in NFL history.

Ahhh man, seriously, we can let this go now can't we? We're bigger than this.

I'll say one thing though, if it wasn't for Jeff Fisher re-building the Rams (especially on D & ST) McVay wouldn't have had that season last year. He definitely created a 'decent' squad of players, because he inherited not a dumpster fire but the ashes of one...

Unfortunately, I think Fisher, apart from the losing record, will be forever remembered for 1 bad draft pick and 1 bad contract and not for adding talent such as Donald, Gurley, Goff, Zuerlein, Hekker, Brockers, Joyner, Havenstein, Brown etc to our roster.

Good post. I've let this go once McVay took over. You are correct that he left a good nucleus for McVay to work with. He just didn't put enough into the offense and hire a good OC.

It is a funny idea 7-9 Happy Jeff Fisher Day

Or every comment he makes being "if I was the offensive coordinator I'd run the ball here."
But, he'd only say that if the team had a lead of 7 points or less...

True. But, I don't give Fisher any credit for this nucleus. His teams sucked so bad that they always had high draft pics. It's not to hard to pick good players when you're frequently picking in the top ten of the draft year after year.

Huh?

2013 - traded from 13th to 8th with Buffalo (Austin).
2014 - Got the #2 overall from the Washington trade (13th was their pick, took Donald)
2015 - 10th (Gurley)
2016 - traded to #1 overall from 15th (Goff)

Why the huh? He picked 8th, 2nd, 13th (from the 2nd) and 1st. All top ten, just as I stated!

His point I believe is that of those 4 picks only 1 was our initial pick. So he traded up 3 times but the rest his team wasn't bad enough to be a top 10 pick except 1 time when he took Gurley. Teams weren't great, but saying they were always top 10 bad isn't accurate, 7-9 is usually good enough for a 10-18 range pick.

Ok. I'll try and clarify. I don't give Fisher any credit for creating a "nucleus" as he had numerous top ten picks (regardless of original slated pick). It's not hard to pick a good player when picking in the top 10 of a draft.

Drafting in the top half of the first round year after year gives teams the opportunity, but not all of them take advantage. Rams found a Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, and potential franchise QB in back to back to back drafts. That's actually very rare to have that kind of success. The last time the Rams drafted Pro Bowlers in three consecutive first round picks was 1991-93. And I would contend the last time they found three players comparable to the calibre of Donald, Gurley and Goff was all the way back in 1970-71 (Hacksaw Reynolds, Isiah Robertson, Jack Youngblood).

The Rams improved their drafting on Day 3 picks too. Since Kevin Demoff came on board the Rams invested in and expanded their scouting department. They've come a long way since the dark days of Zygmunt/Shaw/Linehan, when they paid an outside scouting agency for their evaluations, which is why it always felt like they were picking names out of a hat.

Fisher inherited a team that was almost bereft of depth and talent. Certainly the RG3 trade gave him the opportunity to restock the roster on an accelerated time table. He should get credit for getting the ship righted when it came to adding talent, but he should also share that credit with Les Snead and the Rams personnel department.

Fair enough, but the bust rate is just as high there for every GM/Coach with control as later in the 1st. They still have to make good picks which he occasionally did.
