I think the conversation was more about needing to get
explosive players with the speed and ability to break off big
yardage plays, consistently. Kind of like Barkley breaking the 60 yd TD's

Your point about Kupp being unstoppable was kind of what I was
saying about our last SB. We didn't need the game breaking long plays to get it done.
What we had then and what we have now are offensive weapons that can consistently
keep the chains moving and make the clutch plays when it matters most.
I would say our offense looks fairly similar at wr as our SB team.
OBJ-Davante and Kupp - Puka. And a much better RB with Kyren over Sony Michaels, Akers
But Kupp could and did break big plays with some regularity. Unless you feel a 30-50 yard pass play is not a big play. Sure he’d kill you with consistency until you tried to stop that, then he’d get past you. Explosive doesn’t have to mean you just run away from people.

And a whole lot of people are falling for that hype and talking trade up for him. He's a really good back but agree he's no Barkley or Gurley coming into the draft.

Sounds now like the Jags are thinking either him or Warren at 5, they're said to be all about an offensive weapon.
I don't think its hype, Jeanty is special and certainly has the opportunity to outdo both Barkley and Gurley. He's smaller than both but when has that been a pre-requiste to be a great back? The tape doesn't lie and Jeanty did some insane shit last year. He's earned the hype as far as I'm concerned. I for one wouldn't be surprised if he surpasses Barkley or if he falls short because no matter what any of us thinks, he'll definitely get the opportunity to prove himself. I feel like the only reason Barkley was even more elevated was because he finally played for a non shit team that had arguably the best and biggest road grading o-line he's ever played for. He'd still be good on other teams but not that damn good lol.

The hype is saying he's as good or better than Barkley or Gurley entering the draft. He's a damned good back but he's neither of those guys entering draft.

If Jeanty goes to the Raiders or Jags or Giants etc…he’ll look good. If he goes to a team with a good QB, OL and other weapons he’ll look like Barkley and Gurley.

You don't mortgage the farm for a HB.

Well he smashed both of those players last years statiscally before entering the draft. Any back that does that will be talked about that way. Where he's drafted and how they build around him will ultimately determine how well he does.

Barkley's six foot, weighs 230, and ran a 4.4. Jeanty is, again, a fine prospect. But he is no Barkley and only idiot recency media types are going to draw that comparison.
With due respect, @Merlin the size of a back is not the deciding factor for greatness. (See Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Tomlinson, et. al.) There are so many factors, much like a great quarterback. I think the greatest missed traits for a running back are:
  • Intelligence (Why Lawrence Phillips failed)
  • The ability to see the field and think quickly on your feet. (Why Cam Akers has failed?)
  • Patience.
  • The ability to then make quick cuts and hit holes. (Sanders, Faulk)
  • The ability to keep the body balanced and anticipate contact.
  • The ability to deliver the blow (Earl Campbell- sorry, Isaiah Robertson) and not take the blow.
  • Having that next gear. (Dickerson)
  • Strength and endurance. (Bettis)
  • Pass Pro
  • Ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and just now be an athlete with the ball (Gurley)
I like Barkley. He really schooled the Rams twice last year. He probably lost 3-4 years of his career languishing on the Giants. But I maintain that each of the traits I named above Jeanty is a 9 or a 10.

Having a kid in the same year as Jeanty up at Boise, I saw every one of his games, in person or TV.

He was often the only weapon on the field. Teams would put 8-9 in the box. Boise's QB stood a whopping 5'9". Jeanty would average 10 yards a carry. And yes, against good competition (Oregon, UNLV, Washington St. Some of his best games) He was unflappable.

And a whole lot of people are falling for that hype and talking trade up for him. He's a really good back but agree he's no Barkley or Gurley coming into the draft.

I admit I have been surprised at the level of national attention he has received. Now, he still has to prove it in the NFL. Many great players have fizzled, due to injuries, getting buried on bad teams, or whatever.

We'll see. But I, for one would bet on this kid being one of the special ones. No hype. Just promise.

You could be right and I could easily be wrong. I just don’t see his game translating like a lot of people think. The next level is filled with players that are quicker, stronger, AND faster than just about everything he’s faced. In watching him, I just don’t see the power/speed combination of a truly elite back. And I don’t see Barry Sanders in him either.

Guess we’ll see.

It will be interesting to see but I am doubting him.

I keep harboring back to Gurley in this thread. I remember that draft so well. I was down in Charlotte at a corporate training sitch, and was watching the draft in my hotel room. IIRC, Gurley was expected to go way earlier and I recall some folks suggesting a trade up to get him which seemed preposterous at the time. I never even suggested that I'd like Gurley because it seemed so far fetched. I was amazed for days after that and soooooooo happy he was a Ram

I remember being really surprised because with his knee injury, there was a lot of talk about him dropping like a rock. I was nervously optimistic.

We should have tried to get Saquan Barkley last year, or even Josh Jacobs or Derrick Henry. Nothing wrong with picking up a disgruntled free agent. Then we spend no draft capital. I agree a great running back could make this team special... anyone know of any? PS - look at what McCaffery did for the whiners. Let's win the super bowl this year!
Yeah I wanted them to sign Henry as well. He would have made the redzone offense basically unstoppable imo.

Count me in the group that believes Jeanty will be an elite back at the NFL level.

But he’s going top 10 and likely top 6.

Rams would need to F some major picks to move up that high. I don’t see it.

Your right I remembered Kupp catching everything in sight that year
But what I forgot was the insane 30 plays of 20+ yds.
How quick the elderly forget:explode1: Not even gonna blue font it lol

I do hope we can add another explosive type. whether it's a TE,WR, OR RB.
I do not want us depending on any one player too much.
As Special as Kupp was that year I think we depended on him to the point of
putting too much wear on his body. JMHO
