Rams newcomer Kevin O’Connell, ex-Aztecs QB, plans to help Jared Goff rebound

Working from home during the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t kept Kevin O’Connell, the former San Diego State quarterback, from getting in strenuous workouts.

Improvising, the 34-year-old father of three cranks out “family” push-ups. “It’s normally with my son or my daughter on my back, trying to add a little extra weight to make my push-ups a little harder,” O’Connell said Thursday, laughing.

If only it were so simple to restore the Rams offense to its muscle of not long ago. The talent has fallen off since the team’s Super Bowl run two years ago.

There’s no sugar-coating the No. 1 challenge that confronts O’Connell, the former La Costa Canyon High star who joined coach Sean McVay’s staff as a coordinator in January after three years as an assistant with the Washington Redskins.

Simply, the Rams’ line is in a hazardous state.

My unpopular top 5 (I say this in terms of who I would want under center in KC. So yeah, it's got a bias aspect to it. And yes, 10 years from now factor does come into play.)

Mahomes
Watson
Wilson
Lamar
Murray

I just think if you put Murray with on this Chiefs team this year he'd easily be a top 5 MVP candidate. A mobile QB who can shoot from the hip to explosive receivers is a lethal combination. Murray's problem is ARZ just isn't there yet. But they will be if Kingsbury is up to snuff. That is yet to be determined.

I don't see that being an unpopular top 5 for the chiefs. You're putting in a group of QBs with similar skill sets to Mahomes, so no changes are needed to the offense. All of those choices are supremely athletic and have great arms- With Wilson probably having the worst arm of the group. I'm not sold on Jackson making the reads for the offense, but Reid always schemes people wide open, so it would be easier than in many other offenses.

Picking top 5 QBs for a different team - say one with less speed, but a better offensive line - would result in a much different list.

And last years list likely had Baker Mayfield
I can see the allure of Watson, just dont see how he is ahead of Wentz (Both have injury concern) or Goff (Did take his team to SB)
But I get it, you like running QB, which ironically isnt what Mahomes is, at least not in the same vein as Murray, Watson and Lamar have been.
Steve Young showed that running QB can win, Aaron Rodgers bridged the gap and Russell Wilson confirmed it.
On the other hand, many a career of running QB got trashed because without their legs they were mediocre, a la Culpepper, RGIII, Cam etc

1. You know I love watching Wilson get hit by Aaron Donald, but he is the best in the division, as much as it hurts me to say so.
2. Jared Goff: He's proven that he needs to roll out more until our Oline is rock solid. I've seen him throw pin point passes and I've seen him get pressured and throw picks. When he gets sacked, there seems to be a good chance he fumbles. Still, I like him better than Jimmy G. and the Arizona midget.
3. Jimmy G-String: He has his moments, but he also threw that INT in the Super Bowl which was horrific. I place him above Murray just because Murray hasn't done much yet.
4. Murray: He may be better immediately over Jimmy G with a better performing cast around him, but gotta see it when Aaron Donalds coming like a motherfucker.

And how many of them were picked #1? IMO, Goff still has work to do to justify his selection, O line or no.

I think taking his team to the SB along with his 1st 2 stellar seasons under McVay justified the selection

As for Goff, I have no hesitation in calling this a make or break year because I have zero doubt he will have a huge season. Its his team now, McVay has pushed all his chips in. I think Goff played some great football in 2019, but also made some atrocious miss-reads, and miss-throws. The good news there is the Rams have the tape, he's got the blueprint on that next level

That summed up Goff's season. I could not believe some of those misthrows. He didn't seem as sharp overall as he had been. He still made lots of great throws. He has to get the misreads under control. I think he will be very close to putting it all together. A few tweaks in the offense will help.
