Quarterback Jared Goff will start Saturday for the Los Angeles Rams against the Green Bay Packers.
The news comes as a matter of fact after Rams coach Sean McVay announced Thursday that QB John Wolford has been ruled out for Saturday's contest.
Blake Bortles will be Goff's backup Saturday. McVay added that it's possible undrafted rookie Bryce Perkins will be active as the third QB.
Wolford suffered a stinger in the Rams' Super Wild Card win over the Seattle Seahawks. He hadn't practiced all week. Despite McVay's desire to put a decision off until game-time, Wolford's health made the matter moot.
Goff, who underwent surgery to repair a fractured thumb on his throwing hand, will remain under center. The Rams starter much of the season, Goff missed the season-finale win over Arizona and didn't start last weekend.
When Wolford when down early in the postseason bout, Goff managed the offense and didn't make a big mistake. As one would expect from a QB who'd had three pins inserted into his thumb, the ball came out wonky from Goff's hands several times. He completed 9 of 19 passes for 155 yards and a TD. Still, Goff gutted out the win in a game he could easily have been inactive for last week.
Playing in Green Bay on Saturday, the Rams should lean on Cam Akers and the ground game. If L.A. is in comeback mode early and Goff is forced to throw in the cold, it will be interesting to see how the thumb responds after another week distanced from surgery.

McVay can be a master at managing the game to keep pressure off his quarterback. Playing at Lambeau Field in January against the presumptive MVP, Aaron Rodgers, with a still-banged-up QB could be the young coach's biggest test yet.

Really wish he hadn't had to reveal it so early in the week. Now GB will be fully prepared for Goff. I just cannot see how his thumb will react well to freezing temps. Given the way it came off of his hand last week, we could be in trouble. I'll be rooting my ass off for him, but, we are going to need the D to step up big time, as usual. Problem is, against an elite QB playing at an MVP level, he's not likely to turn over the ball to us.

When our injury report 3 days in a row showed Wolford as not practicing I think they knew what was going to happen.

No merge needed dude, it's an important and relevant development. (y)

My 2 cents: Why announce it midweek? Keep em guessing. Also with Wolford officially OUT, can we scheme up some RPO with either Bortles or Perkins? I mean, i see no scenario where Green Bay doesn't stack the box and send blitz after blitz...so i'm not sure our Akers/Brown run game will get going.

As OS alluded to I think the snaps in practice gave it away. LaFleur knows McVay's tendencies irt prep for games too and all that so obviously it's gonna be Goff.

And tbh that's the way it should be. As much as I like Wolford's legs getting us first downs this team is loaded right now on defense and in the run game and it feels like a fitting moment to live or die with the guy who has been our QB for the past 4 years

I’m guessing they (GB) shut down the middle and short throws forcing Goff to throw long. Stuffing the run. I still have a good feeling I can’t shake. Must be the hooch.

Goff has the playoff experience and hopefully has a fire lit under him now. I hope the thumb has improved in the last week, and I think wearing a glove will help in the cold weather with his grip. Hope he plays a great game and takes us back to the NFC Championship game so we can beat the Saints ass once more. Hand the ball off to Akers, play good defense, and not turn the ball over and we will have a very good shot at beating these fucks.

Los Angeles Rams QB John Wolford ruled out; Jared Goff to start vs. Green Bay Packers
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- There will be no mystery leading up to kickoff regarding who will start at quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams in an NFC divisional-round playoff game against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

Quarterback John Wolford has been ruled out because of a neck injury, so Jared Goff will start, coach Sean McVay said Thursday. Blake Bortles will serve as backup.

McVay expressed disappointment that Wolford was unable to compete at practice this week, but the coach said Goff is making progress while recovering from surgery that he had on the thumb of his throwing hand on Dec. 28.

"He's done a nice job throughout the course of the week," McVay said. "... I know he's been pain-free."

Before Thursday, McVay had been coy about his team's quarterback situation. He didn't announce a starter for last week's game until just before kickoff.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur told reporters Thursday that the decision to start Goff wouldn't affect their game plan "too much."

"I think there may be a few things," said LaFleur, who was Goff's offensive coordinator in L.A. in 2017. "... I think we were pretty much preparing for Jared all week, so it doesn't change too much."

Wolford started the wild-card game against the Seattle Seahawks but exited in the first quarter after he took a blow to his head and neck. He was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure during the game but returned to Lumen Field in time to participate in the Rams' locker room celebration after the 30-20 win.

McVay described Wolford's injury as a "stinger."

Goff replaced Wolford and completed 9 of 19 passes for 155 yards, and he said after the game that it was tough when McVay told him Wolford would start.

"As a competitor, of course I wanted to be out there and I wanted to play and felt like I could make a difference," Goff said. "He's the coach. He had to make a decision that he needed to make early in the week to get out in front of some stuff. I get it. But as a competitor, of course I wanted to play and I was ready to play."

I have a good feeling about this development as well. I think Goff will play better than anyone expects. Play action time, boys...

Jared "freaking" Goff

This game is likely going to require you not have one single lost fumble or even a silly unforeseen fluke interception.

We are rooting for you Jared.

Prove it to us that you can get the job done at Green Bay Saturday. Our fate as your fans is in your hands Mr. Goff.
