But Les who decides what is offensive?
I think overall society does that 'cake...........and does an imperfect but excellent job.
It's an ever evolving thing and everyone gets to play a part. What
@Mackeyser said about the person or group being described plays a larger role than much of the rest.
Another very interesting and subtle wrinkle here is how situational and environmental use of words can change the meaning. Using Jenkins choice of words here..........does anyone think somebody with a developmental disability is OK with being called retard?
Now with that said..........the origin or source also plays a role.
I have known and had gay friends pretty much all of my adult life. One is very close to me. When she is with friends, both male and female, who are gay they occasionally drop what would be a slur in a different environment. She is a musician, a guitar player, a handful of her friends both gay and straight would often go see her play and I tagged along many times.
After a few drinks you'd here things like "you silly fucking dyke" or "shut up you Seahawks" all meant in harmless fashion. Not a lot, but here and there. It was explained to me that among them it's sort of an affectionate thing. It was a really interesting discussion.
Now someone using those slurs at a bus stop or candy store or on social media towards them is an entirely different thing.
As I have thought about this situation with Jenkins as we have all been posting I'm still flabbergasted that nobody in his circle, or his agent or team mates said "dude, apologize and lets move on". I suppose it's possible he doubled down hoping it would get him cut because he's made it no secret that he isn't happy.
