I've NEVER seen a standings sheet like the NFC East right now...If ever there was an argument for adjusting the seeding protocol, this is it...Wow, embarrassing !!! The "winner" of the East this year ought to have to forfeit in the 1st round...

If the division winner doesn't get into the play-offs what's the point of having divisions? How do you work out the schedule if there are no divisions? Don't try to fix what isn't broken and just live with the fact that this will happen every now and then.

This is where my head has always been. Besides, in the NFC East, every fan of those teams remains interested in their team due to the fact playoffs are still a possibility. That’s a good thing for them.

Its hard to see a “better team” miss the playoffs, but that’s so subjective anyway.

Win your division. Make playoffs. Control your destiny.

I like it as is.

You also can't knee jerk. This is the first time its happened, so let this year be the outlier and move on.

Seattle won the NFC West with a 7-9 record a few years back.
Hosted New Orleans, who of course had a winning record, and beat them.

Should never happen.
Reseeding to the top six teams in each conference or whatever destroys division rivalries.
Division rivalries are the life blood of the NFL.
Ownership in the NFL votes in a lot of stupid changes but reseeding will never happen in my opinion and should never happen.
So, you have a weird year where one team with a losing record makes the playoffs?
Who cares?
It’s interesting in a different way.

I know, but is the first year where a team woth potentially double digit losses could go.

Which is why changing the format, or even suggesting it, is so silly. It's an ebb and flow thing. NFC lEast may be the worst division now, but there was a time that the division was elite, winning 8 of 14 SB.
1st path to making playoffs in any sport should always be "Win the Division"

With Smith at the helm The “Former Redskins” look like a team that can compete. They have a decent t running game, talent at WR, and a sound defense. I’d not be the least surprised (actually 100% that they win the East) that they make the playoffs.

And BTW, how smart does Green Bay appear to be now (regarding coaching decisions) in letting McCarthy go? Good grief. I know losing Dak is not ideal however that team is a total disaster. Defense has regressed, the offense is dreadful. If your division is won with less than 8 wins, and your team isnt the one, you should be fired.

I dont disagree that they are a team who can compete. Really the only game their doors were blown off was against our Rams. They've got a pretty tough schedule ahead, @Pittsburgh & @ San Fran the next 2 weeks, then host Seattle and Carolina, then finish on the road @ Philly. If they can pull 3 wins out of that, I think it would be pretty impressive.

That fake punt made me think of the play last season when the Rams tried it against AZ, and McVay was livid.

Did Fassel call it on his own? Did he have authority to call a fake there without McVay’s OK?

Thought about that some more when Fassel was not brought back in the off-season; and thought about it yesterday.

Did McCarthy OK the decision, or was it Fassel? Just a horrible call in that situation in my opinion. Heard McCarthy’s post-game explanation, and it made no sense.

I like Fassel but wonder if these were his calls, and if his in-game judgement is just reckless and awful.

I agree with you and like others here that it gives more motivation for fans and teams to care. My only thing I would like them to consider is not making division winners seeds 1-4. NFC East getting a home game is robbery lol. But I guess that might cause controversy down the line if a team won a really tough division and ended up losing a home playoff game to a 2nd place team in a lesser one. So probably best to leave as is but that home game and getting to play a 5 seed seems like the main robbery to me.

Idea:

Keep same system, but add minimum playoff qualifying record.

For example, 8-8 minimum for division winner to advance to playoffs. If under minimum, next highest seed gets the playoff spot.

I know you are attacking the inequity of a division winner in a historically weak division, but to preserve the divisional champion format I think the "winner" needs a playoff entry no matter what their regular season record was. BUT, I think it would be fair if a Wild Card Team with a better record could have home field against such a weak division winner. that finished with an 8-8 or worse record The loser division champ deserves no breaks and should be happy just for a chance to be in the tournament.

I'm fine with it, too.

I do, however, think that the home field designations should be on record only.

If two teams in a division finish 15-1 with their only losses being to each other, then I think they should be rated 1-2 and each get to host home games.

The idea of a 6-10 team hosting a playoff game is nauseating.

It's like that idiot kid who gets into a great college because of an accident of birth.

Any other division and the fans would be talking about the draft.

Fine, keep the divisions active, but FFS, let the conference standings reflect record.
