Rams to Take on Chiefs for 2nd Preseason Contest

Myles Simmons

After a rousing comeback win in their first preseason matchup, the Rams will be back in action on Saturday evening against the Chiefs (0-1).

The contest will feature the preseason debut of running back Todd Gurley, who was a healthy scratch last week against the Cowboys.

“I don’t know how much, but he’s going to play. Maybe a series, maybe two,” head coach Jeff Fisher said. “A couple carries, maybe some protection stuff and then get him out.”

Still recovering from his ACL tear in November 2014, Gurley did not take a snap during the 2015 preseason. But that did not stop him from becoming the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Nevertheless, Gurley sees value in August game reps.

“Obviously, practice is a lot different from the game,” Gurley said. “You do that stuff in practice, but those game reps creep up on you a lot faster. It’s always good to go in there and get some reps, for sure.”

Also on the playing time front, Fisher said he plans on having quarterback Jared Goff run a series or two with the first-team offense.

“It’s important to get [him] in there with the starters and the ones, so I think it’ll be a good experience for him,” Fisher said. “He’s been working with them out here off and on all week.”

Goff has been making steady progress in practice, putting together one of his best days of training camp on Wednesday.

“At this point, every day gets better,” Goff said after the session. “Like I’ve said a few times at this point, every day its gotten better since OTAs, all the way through, through the summer, minicamp, up until now, I feel like I’ve grown exponentially, and I’m happy with where I’m at.”

While the No. 1 overall pick left last week’s contest a bit earlier than planned due to experience discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder, Goff had no issues with it in practice this week.

On the other side, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters he’s planning on playing his starters through the first half, which means the Rams should see plenty of quarterback Alex Smith and cornerback Marcus Peters. Smith has thrived as a quarterback under Reid, averaging 3,355 yards passing, 20 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions over the last three seasons.

Peters is the reigning AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, winning the award after leading the league with eight interceptions last season — two of which he returned for touchdowns. He’s picked up right where he left off, picking off a pass against Seattle last week.

The Rams will likely see a familiar face in the opposing huddle during the second half, as quarterback Nick Foles comes to town competing for Kansas City’s backup quarterback role. Foles, of course, started 11 games for the Rams last year. Los Angeles released the signal-caller just before the start of training camp in July.

Generally, Fisher said the Rams’ starters will play into the second quarter and the club will start substituting from there. We do know that while defensive end Robert Quinn is healthy and back from watching his sister compete in the 100m hurdles at the Olympics, the D-lineman is not expected to play on Saturday.

“I think it just makes sense to hold Robert for another week [with] the travel and everything,” Fisher said. “He had a good practice today. He’s going to get caught up — his sleep is a little off and you don’t want to take a chance. He’s in great shape, so I think we’ll hold Rob until we go to Denver.”

Cornerback E.J. Gaines is expected to see live snaps for the first time since Week 16 of the 2014 season. And tight end Temarrick Hemingway should see significant time at tight end after a solid week of camp.

“Temarrick is coming along fast,” Fisher said. “He’s been slowed by injury, but had a really good couple of days on the practice field, offensively. We haven’t done anything with him in special teams, we’ll increase that load with him next week.”

Fisher also said offensive lineman Isaiah Battle and wide receiver Nelson Spruce have been ruled out. Tight end Tyler Higbee has been dealing with flu-like symptoms so he may be held out. And safety/linebacker Mark Barron may be a game-time decision.

The second preseason game is similar to the first in that teams will not do much game-planning. But with all the hype that went into the team’s re-introduction to Los Angeles, it will probably be nice to have some normalcy this time around.

“I think the guys will be a little bit more relaxed, having gone through the experience,” Fisher said. “Understand that 90 minutes before kickoff, there’s a lot of stuff going on in their world. Some guys were on the field with pregame warm-ups and asking for help because they needed tickets and that shouldn’t be the case – that’s a distraction. Once you get through the first one, I think things will settle down a little bit for us.”

Kickoff at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is slated for 6 p.m. The game will be televised on CBS 2 in Los Angeles and simulcast on the NFL Network for those outside the home market.

Opponent Breakdown: Preseason vs. Chiefs

Myles Simmons
Rams Insider
@MylesASimmons

The Chiefs may have started out the 2015 season slow, but they were one of the best teams in the league by year’s end.

Kansas City began the campaign 1-5 before ripping off 10 straight wins to finish the season 11-5 with a Wild Card berth. The club blanked the Texans in Houston in the first round of the playoffs, 30-0, before falling 27-20 to New England in the divisional round.

This week, the Chiefs head to Los Angeles for the second preseason exhibition contest. And they’ll be doing so with a familiar face getting significant time under center.

AT A GLANCE

Andy Reid is beginning his fourth season as the Chiefs head coach after spending 14 years in the same position with the Eagles. Reid’s compiled a 48-31 record since his arrival in Kansas City, sandwiching a 9-7 season between two 11-5 years in 2013 and 2015.

Perhaps Reid’s most significant move in Kansas City was to trade for quarterback Alex Smith, who has excelled in his three years in the midwest. Smith carries a reputation for being a so-called “game manager,” but that didn’t stop him from setting a new career high with 3,486 yards passing last year at 7.4 yards per attempt.

Smith’s main targets are wide receiver Jeremy Maclin — who Reid drafted in Philadelphia — and tight end Travis Kelce. The two combined for 159 receptions, 1,963 yards receiving, and 13 of Smith’s 20 touchdown passes in 2015.

A staple of a Reid offense is a strong running game, and the Chiefs follow that mold. Though Jamaal Charles suffered the second ACL tear of his career in 2015, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware filled in admirably.

Defensively, Kansas City has 2015 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year Marcus Peters, who led the league with eight interceptions in his first season. Peters took two of those picks to the house — a mark that also topped the NFL. Plus, the Chiefs have two of the better pass rushers in the league in Justin Houston and Tamba Hali plus 2015 Comeback Player of the Year, safety Eric Berry.

WHO MAY NOT PLAY?

Maclin has sat out some practices this week with a groin injury and appears unlikely to play.

Charles was recently activated off of the Physically Unable to Perform list, but the team is still bringing him along slowly in practice. Thus, it’s highly unlikely he’ll see time on the field in preseason. West also sat out a few practices this week with a mild elbow strain and sprain, and may not play.

Houston and Hali are both on PUP and will not play on Saturday either. They are each currently recovering from offseason knee surgery.

Berry has been absent from training camp while in a contract dispute with the team.

WHO ARE PLAYERS TO WATCH?

Reid told reporters he plans on playing the Chiefs starters for the first half, which means Smith and Kelce should see plenty of action.

The plan is for the #Chiefs first-team offense to play the first half on Saturday night against the #Rams, the 2's in 3Q and 3's in 4Q.

— BJ Kissel (@ChiefsReporter) August 18, 2016
Peters had an interception last week against Seattle and the ball hawk will certainly be looking for more at the Coliseum. He also had a number of interceptions in practice this week.

With Charles out and West possibly sitting, too, Ware and Knile Davis should see significant time at running back.

And at quarterback, former Ram Nick Foles will likely have a number of reps in the second half. Reid drafted Foles in Philadelphia, and though the quarterback spent only one year with the head coach, by all accounts Foles has quickly picked up the offensive system in Kansas City. Last week, Foles finished 4-of-8 passing for 37 yards. He is a favorite to earn the Chiefs’ backup quarterback role.

A nice early game day thread with my morning coffee, thanks Den!

“I don’t know how much, but he’s going to play. Maybe a series, maybe two,” head coach Jeff Fisher said. “A couple carries, maybe some protection stuff and then get him out.”

Slippery slope players of Gurley's ability as far as preseason goes. I still like to see him get more then a few carries over the next two weeks.

This makes sense. Quinn will be the key to the defense when the real games matter. Donald just can't be the only one getting pressure on QBs. Last year, without Quinn the defense didn't have the same bite.

Five Rookies To Watch

The Los Angeles Rams won their first game in a long time, against the Dallas Cowboys. This week the team will be facing the Chiefs in an attempt to win another game. With all of that being said, here at the five rookies that you should keep your eyes on this week.

QB Jared Goff
Goff's first preseason was pretty uneventful. He missed a key blitz that ended with him being pounded to the turf and the football hanging in the air where it was intercepted. He would finish the game throwing for less than 50 yards and no touchdowns. He looked good in some areas and bad in others, however with Goff getting time to play with the first team offense, maybe he can show a glimpse of what made the Rams comfortable enough to draft him.

RB Aaron Green
Most outsiders only know about Todd Gurley, but the Rams have other talented RBs on the roster. Benny Cunningham and Malcolm Brown are solid and although they aren't Gurley, they are good enough to lean on. Then you have Aaron Green, who looked well against the Cowboys and capped the game off with a receiving touchdown. Although Green probably won't make an impact for the Rams in his rookie season, he could carve out a role down the road, especially with Benny Cunningham being on a one year deal.

WR Duke Williams
Every season there are players that looked great in training camp and don't show up in games, there is a chance that Williams could fit that bill. The troubled receiver is talented and turned heads in camp, but until he makes plays on the field there's no way that the Rams keep him on the roster, especially with the logjam at the bottom of the receiving corp.

DE Ian Seau
Talk about surprises, Seau looked good when he was on the field. He sacked the Cowboys QB and seemed to be in the backfield more than a couple of times. Seau probably doesn't have the size to be a big time player, but he did showcase a good motor and and decent closing speed. Even if Seau doesn't make the Rams practice squad, he could find a way to play somewhere.

WR Mike Thomas
Many people including the website Pro Football Focus which ranked Thomas as a top 10 sleeper in the 2016 NFL Draft class. However thus far, Thomas has only flashed the ability to drop the ball, which happened during training camp and reflected during the Cowboys preseason game where he dropped two passes.

Even though Thomas showed some ability in college, if he wants to make the team he will need to make some big time catches, some splash plays, and consistency on special teams

Jeff Fisher laid out the Case Keenum/Jared Goff plan for Saturday

It seems that in each of the past two weeks of practice for the Los Angeles Rams, one of the biggest hot-button topics has been about how much playing time quarterback’s Case Keenum and Jared Goff will get.

While Keenum saw limited action in the preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys, Goff wasn’t able to play more than a quarter either, due to a shoulder injury. As you can imagine, that wasn’t exactly the plan for head coach Jeff Fisher.

After being asked the question once again heading into the second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Fisher seemed to have a pretty strong gameplan laid out.

Via Lindsey Thiry of the Los Angeles Times:

Jeff Fisher said Case Keenum will start Saturday and play a few series and then Jared Goff will play some with ones, then into third quarter

That’s about what you’d expect overall. While Keenum will remain as the starter, the plan has apparently been to get Goff action with the first-team offense all week long.

For Rams fans who’ll be in attendance on Saturday, this is obviously good news, as it’ll be the team’s final home game of the preseason. After this game, the Rams head on the road to take on the Denver Broncos, followed by the Minnesota Vikings. From there, they’ll open up their regular season against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1.

4 Rams who need to bounce back

http://theramswire.usatoday.com/201...-angeles-rams-4-rams-who-need-to-bounce-back/

The Los Angeles Rams are set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the second game of their preseason on Saturday night, and there’s plenty to watch for. While these four names below who need to bounce back aren’t facing a make-or-break type game for their roster chances (in most cases), they specifically need to improve if they want to have any chance to make an impact in 2016.

Let’s kick things off with four players who Rams fans will probably have their eyes locked in on during Saturday’s game, and begin with one rookie wide receiver.

Pharoh Cooper
While Cooper saw just two targets in the preseason opener, it was a drop across the middle that stuck in the minds of fans. Fortunately, Cooper isn’t in danger of missing out on the roster it seems, but we’re all anxiously awaiting the moment he shakes off those rookie jitters and can break through.

The good news for Cooper is that he was impressive with both his kick return and punt return, so he has that working in his favor. He’ll get in the flow of things, and should have a strong showing.

Jared Goff
One game of preseason struggles? We can just shake that off. If Goff struggles in extended action during the second preseason game, then there may be a bit more panic at that point. While he completed just 4-of-9 passes for 38 yards and an interception in the opener, Goff should be asked to air it out early and often from the moment he steps on the field. Overall, watching the rookie in this game should be pretty exciting.

Coty Sensabaugh
On a scale of 1-10 on how worried I am about Sensabaugh, it’s probably a two or three, at most. Unfortunately, Sensabaugh was tasked with guarding a healthy and hungry Dez Bryant in the preseason opener. Let’s be honest here, when Bryant is healthy, he’s one of the top receivers in the game. Sensabaugh will be just fine, but for his own confidence and his position in the secondary, seeing him bounce back Saturday would be nice to see.

Brandon Chubb
The undrafted free agent from Wake Forest didn’t get a chance to show Rams fans what he’s really capable of, even though he saw his fair share of snaps. Chubb wound up with just one tackle, and anytime you come in as a UDFA you need to make an impact right out of the gate. This second preseason game could be pivotal for Chubb, who totaled 313 combined tackles over four seasons with the Demon Deacons. We should see plenty of him on Saturday night, and don’t be shocked if he comes out playing with a ton of fire.

I also want to see Tammarick Hemingway after reading dens post.
I haven't really heard much about him except that he's raw. Sounds like he's had a good week.

Watch out for Grob today. I had a dream he had a HUGE open field block to make tons of space for Benny Cunningham. Go Grob Go!

:coach:Don't forget about our chat room people. Its fast & works great. Its for those who like good chat room commentary to go with what your watching. It can be R rated at certain times.

I am going to be looking hard at several areas.....1st will be the CB's & then DE's. Looking for steady improvement in Hill & Washington. How well Coty recovers too. I have zero hope for any improvement for our starting DE's in their pass rush game so I will zero in on Seau-Longacre & Westbrooks. I'll watch Longacre steal Eugene Sims roster spot once again. Look to see if Westbrooks is the last DL off the snap again. Looking to see how well "slow mo" Coples does in backing up Brockers on passing downs. King Kong 380 plus pound Thomas did well for a big guy @ NT. Guess we see Lynch in for Barron? or will we see Forrest flip to WSLB'er for a change? Chubb is no competition for Hager IMO.

1st thing is to see where #48 is at & watch him block! Some of the best blocks of last weeks game came from#48. Watch to see if WWC's Kush & Folkerts continue to hustle inside. OLT Pace Murphy is a very pleasant surprise thus far. The evening for Temarrick #84 to sparkle now that has Tyler sick? Look to observe Andrew Donnal on his power game.

I'd rather Gurley get one or two carries instead of one or two series. We've got a very crowded backfield-- give the other guys some reps. I really want to see more of Brown and Green.

Btw, didn't we sign Dylan Thompson?

Shhhhhh bubbaram.... Please don't mention the penalty count.... Some of the Rams players may occasionally read this forum and we don't need any subliminal messages creeping in their minds.

lets keep it on the down low

Because they are playing KC the game will be live in St Louis but I'm sure it will be the Chiefs broadcast.
