The rumors about Clay Matthews are interesting too. He's running on fumes, but might be a guy who could help a Super Bowl contender. Would he be affordable?

I don't know enough about him, is he going to be fairly priced?

Boy that was dumb of me, big name FA's are almost never a good deal. Haha.

Looking at spotrac it’s a hair over $8 million. Overthecap.com show about $8.7 million. Vinny says $9 million hah fun times. I’d say going with the low number is safest.
The sticking point seems to be whether or not RFA tenders and allowances for Draft picks is included in this number. I was of the impression that we had around $9M including those expenses.

Each number I quoted includes those.

Lol no one can agree on what rams have on cap space. According to Vinny they have 9mil AFTER rookie hold and rfa. That’s a much more manageable number if true.

So the other article said it's 9 Million....w/o the drafted players..... Vinny seems to be saying that it's 9 Mill "after draft holds" so AND accounting for restricted free agents...so that means it includes Malcolm Brown and Littleton..

Ok... so if Vinny is right.... I still say we can give CJ $2 mill out of that $9 mill.... or $3...

and we definitely need some guys to restructure to free up a little more...we need some vet depth on the O-line D-line...and LB..

The other thing to remember is that we need money to sign players during the season.

Last year it was Jojo and CJ - we could always cut someone during the season but for replacing someone that goes on IR, we'll need to have at least a few million.

i read on Ramswire that the Rams could open up about 30 mil by restructuring a few contracts (AD and Cooks being two)

But it’s always one of those deals where you either pay me now or pay me later. So the trick is when is the better time to pay.

First I need to say this ...I am not good @ numbers So I made a decision to marry a banker/accountant back in 1975. It's worked out well for me.

Rams were authorized to spend $188.2 million of cap $$ this season. Rams have contacted top 51 players @ a current cost of approx $176 million. Rams have over $3.85 million of dead cap funds $$$. My question here is this Dead Cap Funds figure of $3.85 included in the $176 million? I don't think so, If it is NOT then you would have to add those two figures. That approx. total is $179.85 million tied up in the Ram Cap thus far.

Next Rams have 7 draft selections If those remain the same (doubtful) the cap funds needed to sign those seven drafted players will be approx. $5.534 million. If I add that draft figure cost $5.534 million to the $179.85 million= $185.284 million. We started with $188.2 million.

What do you come up with? I see a little less than $3 million of available cap space to be spent @ this point. But it's always fluid & can change quickly due to all the elements involved from what I have learned. I have no idea how all these writers & sports talkers can come up with $9 million of available cap funds @ this point but I sure hope that I am wrong & they are right? :bueller:

And even though we are slotted/expected to pay our draft class about $5.5 million, I believe that less than half of that will apply to the cap. Only the top 51 salaries count against the cap and we have more than that under contract now, so the salaries of our seven draft picks will replace seven players already on the roster and counting against the cap. The later round picks will earn only a few thousand dollars more than the players at the bottom of the 51.

So, with maybe $8 million in cap space before the draft, subtracting about $2 million for the draft class as they apply to the cap, I think we still have about $6 million remaining. If we do nothing else, we will have enough cap $ buffer for in-season roster moves like you described above. And like you said above, we could restructure contracts and create cap space in 2019 if we needed to do that.

These things are so fluid. Teams have ways of making room if they really want someone. Maybe not a high priced player but lower cost guys like CJ, Matthews, etc can be had. All they gotta do is restructure, prorate signing bonuses, cuts, etc. They can make it happen if they want to. Question is, how much do you want to affect future cap money?
