for those complaining about Rams wasting 4th round pick on Bennett

I have missed maybe 3 USC games in the last 5 years. I have zero faith that he’s more than a stud college quarterback. Is he better than Matt Leinart was? Sam Darnold? Even Mark Sanchez?

He’s not better than Leinart, that’s for sure. Darnold? Meh. Sanchez, yes. At least Sanchez could get the ball out quickly and get through his reads. That’s why he was able to manage games when he had a decent offense around him and a top Defense, which is why he made two AFC championship games. When Caleb’s pocket breaks down before he finds an open receiver, that backyard crap doesn’t breed success in the NFL.

And don’t act like Manziel was just a product of Evans. Evans had 1300 yards and 12 Touchdowns out of Johnnys 4100 and 37. Evans was clearly his number 1, and his numbers would look the same regardless of who was throwing to him, but Johnny was a baller in college.

Some game doesn’t translate to the league, and I don’t thing Caleb’s will. I hope I’m wrong. With Brady retired, I don’t root against any player unless they’re going against the Rams. I just don’t see a game that translates.

Caleb has a much better arm than Manziel. That might make him be able to bridge the difference between a college QB running for his life and a pro QB running for his life.

Look at Josh Allen.

In fact, now that I think about it, I think Caleb's game is closer to Josh Allen's type of game than Mahomes without the power that Josh Allen brings in his running game. But the height difference is definitely a concern if he tries to play the type of game Josh Allen does at the pro level.

I think two things about this.

McVay LOVES Stafford and will ride him until the saddle falls off.

However, McVay is always looking ahead and you can tell he likes Bennett in a more permanent way than "#2 QB and guy who runs the scout team"

How do we know this?

When describing the OL, he didn't describe it based on Stafford as QB. He essentially described Bennett behind it from a type standpoint... he referred to the big guards that allowed Drew Brees to step up in the pocket.

Is Drew Brees a decent comp for Bennett? Kinda, yeah.

And you know this is more than conjecture because they took two big OL in the top 5 rounds including a stud at #36 for one of those guard spots... the exact kind of guard he was referring to when talking about drafting Avila after Day 2... and that's prior to drafting Bennett in round 4 on Day 3...

If McVay is right about Bennett being much more like Brees than Wolford, then we've got the window opening up next year from a Salary cap perspective and potentially a year or two of Bennett on a rookie deal.

But yeah, we'll know if Bennett is more Brees than Wolford by the last preseason game... I think Bennett will light things up, I really do.

Some draft guru is going to barely hint at Caleb Williams and the s-tag and there will be people here who lose their minds.

I wish someone would do a deep dive comparison of Williams, Kyler Murray, and Baker Mayfield at similar career stages under Lincoln Riley. A quick eye-balling seems that Williams is statistically in the neighborhood of the other two, not outstandingly better. Watching Caleb, he's not the athlete of Kyler, but a bit more so than Baker. No, you can't add Jalen Hurts because of his plus-plus leadership and his proven ability in a different program -- i.e., no similar stage.

The s-tag? "System Quarterback". I'm not saying Caleb is a SQB, but no rational person is going to ignore the Lincoln Riley influence.

It's probably not a bad thing that McVay has a good friend who coached Kyler and will be coaching Caleb and will be able to provide a first-person comparison & contrast of the two.

Honestly, every QB is a system QB of one variety or another.

I mean imagine a QB being excellent in the NFL without a system. What do you get? Archie Manning...

He’s absolutely better than any of them.
He carried more of a burden with less talent around him than Leinart… Sanchez wasn’t close.
Darnold is the closest in style… and yep.. he’s been a washout. It happens.
If you watched Caleb… you’ll know he made many excellent throws within the structure of the offense… the “hole shot” against the Beavers was a top tier throw in a critical, high pressure moment.

Brees was an outlier due to his height, and even he was an inch taller than Bennett

How can I get away with that on here? It was my take on the evaluation of a player the Rams drafted. I was explaining why I was not enthusiastic about the pick. I'm not harping on it, I haven't called him that in other posts and am not trying to convince anyone about him.
I've also pointed out that I hope he succeeds as a Ram and that he's conducted himself well as a Ram to this point and I hope it stays that way.

Remember too. If they had found a trade partner, there would have been a different pick, not named Avila. There were supposedly 5 offensive players in round one that they had rated higher. Maybe one was Skoronski, but I think the others were pass catchers.

I also want to add that if Caleb tries to play like Allen in the pros that he will not be able to succeed because Allen breaks a ton of tackles and I doubt Caleb will be able to break as many as Allen.

True, but I also think that the Rams are looking back on that draft and have to be amazed at how it broke for them based on what they look for.

After the draft, trade up for a Higbee replacement or have a stud OG and Higbee? I think they Rams will be thankful NONE of the teams at the end of the draft traded out, making all the trade down scenarios moot.

I think this draft is gonna be looked on as an A+ with multiple contributors or greater this draft.
