Actually considering how the injuries went with the Rams this season, I'm kind of glad that the Niners look to be a SB contender. Shocking? Hear me out.
Let's say the pundits are right this time and the Niners win a Super Bowl. It sets up a real conundrum for them next year. Jimmy G is a UFA who has been abused by the franchise. But still he leads them to a SB win? But...but....but what about Trey Lance? Jimmy G will make them pay a ransom to return. If he does, the Rams know how to beat him. Also, he's not the kind of QB that can carry a team without a very strong run game.
There is a real chance he would not want to return considering that Lance will always be lurking behind him. I have always said Lance has a much higher ceiling. That said he's a project player and the Niners would have to expect a year or two for him to grow into the position. That is to say their SB window just slammed shut.
There are at least 6 teams that would pay for Jimmy G if he wins a Super Bowl. The Niners option would be to make a run at Derek Carr. A definite upgrade to either Lance or Jimmy. But it will cost them 2-3 first rounders. I'm not so sure Carr is a good fit unless they change their offense. Carr is more like Stafford in that he's not a progression type of QB. He reads and anticipates which like Stafford can be boom or bust at times. Carr is a better fit in Tampa where IMO he will sign. Tommy B would love to sign with the Niners. His skillset is declining, and the Rams have always played him tough. He's a short term rental which would be fine with the Lance supporters in the FO. IMO Tommy B probably signs with the Niners.
Tommy B will cost the Niners and they aren't exactly flush. It will test their ability to manipulate their cap.
Yeah I see Derek Carr, Jimmy G and Tommy B garnering the biggest attention in 2023 of the top QB needy teams. In the eyes of most Baker is a TBD type of player, clearly a system QB. I don't see him being offered the kind of money he might be expecting. Sure he could end up in Houston, Atlanta, New Orleans, Indy, Vegas or Seattle, teams desperate enough to overpay but career wise what kind of move would that be for Mayfield? Most of those teams would be looking at the draft.
