Bullshit call. First, I only see 9 Rams in that screen. Never see three lined up outside so doubt there were 3 on the other side. Second, you never call unsportsmanlike penalty without announcing the player #s so they are on notice in case of another like penalty. Third, punt team rarely huddles so there was probably no breaking of the huddle and Sko then coming onto field. This is a prime example of the dark side of the NFL. I think it has become pretty obvious that the NFL tries to manipulate games when they have an agenda and it seems remotely possible. Maybe not always to pre-determine a winner but to keep games closer and entertaining. They also don't want a team's fanbase abandoning a team too early in a season. Watch out next week! Detroit owners need a win real bad.

Firstly, and unsportsmanlike penalty is always a deadball penalty and does NOT negate the previous play. If its a penalty that occurs during the play it would be called something different, such as Unnecessary Roughness, Helmet to Helmet, Roughing Passer, etc. It would be specific.

That said, even off setting unsportsmanlike penalties would be a dead ball penalty. I cannot recall ever seeing one called and it not being a deal ball penalty that is imposed from last play. It was a real bullshit play and, thankfully, it did not come back to bite us, but imagine that it had.... I'm still waiting for the NFL to explain it or even tell us it was a mistake, which they won't do.

And how can it be offsetting?

I think they inserted that rule after Fisher had Hekker throw to Amendola for a TD against Seattle

I remember that play was legal because Amendola never left the field of play, he was there for the previous play.

But funny enough, apparently it was a rule that went into place in 1954 after the Rams did it on their first play of the season.

I have absolutely no idea how it was offsetting though, or even if the rule was applied correctly. This just seems to be the best guess.

so a serious question since I am too lazy to read the play by play list.... what happened on the next play? Did the Rams have to punt? Or did the Giants take possession? I would imagine the Rams punted

I don't have the time to read previous posts, but I just wanted to say that the refs really messed up. I haven't had time to watch media surrounding it either. Offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct, but no players numbers or explanations. Bad call.

Can't line up within five yards of his bench? Telling a receiver he can't line up outside? That's totally bizarre.

Maybe if it's a successful play it's considered taunting because it worked?

The gunner lines up outside on every play on a punt, and on both sides. The giants were playing for the block.

so I see more explanations on why the Rams were called for it, but nothing on what the Giants did to get a flag.

FWIW McVay said they had video proof that he went inside the numbers and back out, so it was a botched call regardless.

Still no explanation for the Giants, maybe some sort of taunting thing? Doesn’t look like the tackle was anything, and they obviously haven’t explained it and never will.

Onto next week I suppose.

It was a farce, officials should be fined for this BS. offsetting should have been a dead ball foul and the Rams should have been allowed to have the first down.

There was a KO or punt return to us in the first quarter that was hilarious/ridiculous. They called the Rams for holding on the return and when they announce the penalty they're showing the replay and you see a Gman giving one of our blockers a pseudo COVID test. Well it sure looked that way with the guys hand way up in our guys grill and our guys head shoved back. Blatant hands to the face. The refs seriously sucked in this one, especially in the first quarter.

Initially the call was two unsportsmanlike penalties on each side.

Then a bit later someone mentioned that the one on the Rams could have been because the refs felt that Skowronek was trying to look like he was not a part of the play pre-snap and was trying to trick the defense. I'm not sure how they got that idea, since he was waving his arms while standing on the field.

As far as I know there isn't any such penalty. If there is then there should be no more flea flickers, Statue of Liberty, Double reverse or fake spikes allowed.

It was total BS imo.

It is a penalty if you don't "report" which covers eligible linemen and there is an "unsportsmanlike" penalty if a player does that... just barely walks on to the field of play and isn't clearly part of a formation. I don't remember when that changed, but it's been quite awhile now iirc.

But that's not what happened.

I still can't figure it out, but it def wasn't Skowronek sneaking on to the field of play. If that was the call, it's completely bogus. You can't sneak on the field while waiving your hands like a madman... that's just not how sneaking works...
