Would be in agreement with your #1(Interior OL) & #2 (Corner) assessments. Right there will those two I would state firmly that Edge Rushers/OLB'ers to being desired. Ram's will lose a starting OLB'er & the top reserve OLB'er to UFA"cy IMO. Who would you see
Yes the OLB position without Von looks bad. This is why the Rams are probably going to prioritize him. Edge is tough to fill with this approach.

Corner is simply required now, with Williams leaving. Secondary period needs a hard look and maybe move some pieces to optimize the safety pairing.

Hopefully Von and Odell get done soon, leaving OL and secondary as main focus areas.

I've felt that signing Miller was a very high priority since I learned that if he leaves, it's not the same as other FAs because of his age. The Rams simply aren't going to let someone performing at that level that they gave 2nd and 3rd round value for walk out their door and only getting back a 5th round comp.. here's the relevant section on comp picks from OTC..

  • Players who have ten or more accrued seasons may only yield a maximum of a 5th round compensatory pick, even if their actual value would otherwise be assigned higher. See Alan Faneca in 2009, who only awarded Pittsburgh with a 5th round pick instead of a 3rd despite his contract, playing time, and postseason honors. However, App. V, §4 revealed that this rule does not apply to quarterbacks.
They'll get Von done. Odell is still a question mark because of the injury. The need to draft at least one corner, imo.. and probably another safety.

I see where Jaquiski Tartt is scheduled to hit free agency. Maybe the Rams should make an offer.

You know, as kind of a way to say ... 'Thank You'.

Miller is not just an all time great who can still play, he and AD together are as nearly unblockable as any two players ever. They sent our d-line into the stratosphere and won us a championship just as much, if not more so, as Stafford and Kupp. Von is also the guy who will keep AD going for three more years.

Imo if we want another Super Bowl win there is no way to backfill or replace Von.

Would be nice the get lucky and find a good corner or two in the mid rounds. I think in a few yrs Ramsey moves to S and becomes a ball hawking CF and thus we need to find some quality CB's.

Not gonna lie I am tempted seeing Honey Badger on that FA list. Safeties don't make all that much in FA. He'd settle shit down quicklike back there. Would not surprise me to see them go get him though it would require some creativity and clearing some of that room out.

I wonder if the Rams surprise us in free agency, do something we don’t see coming?

If so, where would that be? Mathieu fits that.

I'd be happy to see Von Miller return, however I dont see him as a necessity. Surely not with a "break the bank" type contract for which he could be, and rightly so, looking for.
The Rams run game was exposed in the playoffs, particularly once Higbee went out.
SB: 23 rush/43 yards with 7 of those on that Cooper "cant stop me" Kupp
NFCCG: 29 rush/70 yards with 40 of those yards in 1st Q before Higbee went out
Div round: 30 rush/73 yards with 15 of those yards coming on the Jefferson sweep
3 game total, 82 rush, 186 yards. Paltry 2.27 YPC (2.1 without VJ sweep)
Post season was a magic carpet ride for sure. Epic comebacks, Stafford balling like a HOFer
Tight End is a significant weakness on this team, and its too vital to keep ignoring.
Heck, Gronk wants to go Hollywood, where better to do it than in Sofi?? Ertz can still block though there's not much tread on the tires and I'd surely kick the tires on Max Williams, he's a beast of a blocker
Njoku is my favorite however, and would be more of an option along the lines of Engram who could be an offensive weapon while Higbee more a blocker

There are a bunch of safeties that can play that are available.. if we make a splash, honey badger does fit the bill. But if we don't shock.. we still needed a safety to come out of retirement to make a run, so depth is huge. There are some solid vets that could make the calls that won't break the bank.. Jason mcourty, Kareem Jackson, Anthony Harris, etc. Also some younger potential like Tracy Walker, Jordan whitehead, tashaun Gibson, etc. I could definitely seem them targeting one of these guys.

I wouldn't put anything past Snead but that's not his modus operandi so I'd be surprised. Every year we expect them to make a splash and it never happens outside of retaining a few of our own FAs.

I say go get this guy if his asking price isn't too high.

OL

Havenstein: excellent RT at a great price plus team control.
Edwards: solid OG might even factor into OT plans though only one season left.
Shelton: likely our starting Center for 2022.

Evans: a bit behind the curve for his class, not sure he's good enough but we have another year.
Anchrum: solid depth at OT/OG.
A Jackson: solid depth OT who has shown a lot for his experience level, might have something here.

D Jackson: probably depth at best, undersized meh.
Ealy: bubble guy at best.

Positional outlook: First off I think Whitworth is retired and Corbett and Allen are gone. Neither of the FAs offer anything special that would lead the Rams to retain them. Noteboom looks like solid LT material though the sample size is somewhat small, and is likely to return. So my count is 6 NFL players on this roster, 7 if they retain Noteboom. This insinuates that if they keep Boom they will draft one or two OL for the pipeline.

If they don't keep Boom which is unlikely but possible then the roster size of 6 and only Hav being paid means they're making a run at a FA for the LT position or maybe the interior. And whether that happens or not we're talking more fresh blood for the pipeline.

Depth Chart (Noteboom retained in FA):

LT: Noteboom / A Jackson
LG: Edwards
C: Shelton / DRAFT
RG: Evans / Anchrum
RT: Havenstein / DRAFT

Notes: in this depth chart there is more consistency with the group but less room to improve next season. I am of the mind that improvement will be desired so not sure this gets it done.

Depth Chart (No FAs retained):

LT: A Jackson
LG: Edwards
C: Shelton / DRAFT
RG: Evans / Anchrum
RT: Havenstein / DRAFT

Notes: in this depth chart if they don't retain Boom they will add a FA who upgrades the OL. It would likely be a LT like Armstead as the target, however if they really like A Jackson it might be an interior add.

Extending OC Coleman Shelton could transform LA Rams 2022 OL

What will the LA Rams be up to for the 2022 NFL season? That’s a tough call because the team continues to assemble the coaching staff, and has yet to make a meaningful roster move. But just be patient, and observe. Clues are coming. What do I mean?

You can learn quite a bit about the world around you from simple observations. For example, you can predict the severity of the upcoming winter based upon the thickness and color of the coat of animal fur. Some native Americans look to the colors of the surrounding flora to give clues as to long-range weather forecasts. Punxsutawney Pennsylvania relies upon a groundhog named Phil to predict the coming of spring.

The keystone to the LA Rams offseason efforts hinges upon how the LA Rams handle the extension of backup offensive center, Coleman Shelton. Why is a backup, and relatively inexpensive, offensive lineman my focus? Simply stated, the LA Rams reveal the plans of their entire offensive line for 2022 based upon what they do with Shelton.

Run Sony run

What we learned about the LA Rams in the 2021 NFL season is that the offense was a very good rushing offense, as long as certain conditions were met. Those conditions were Coleman Shelton needed to be hiking the football, and RB Sony Michel needed to be the featured running back.

Coleman Shelton had three games in the 2021 NFL Season where he played more than 50 offensive snaps. How well did the Rams rush in those games? In Week 12, Michel rushed 24 times for 121 yards and a touchdown. In Week 13, Michel rushed 20 times for 79 yards. In Week 16, Michel rushed 27 times for 131 yards and a touchdown. In three games, the pair combined to generate 71 rushes for 331 yards and two touchdowns.

Okay, so surely the offense traded out a less effective pass blocking structure, right? Well, in those same three games, Rams QB Matthew Stafford threw 70 of 105 passes for 779 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. And in those three games, he was only sacked four times.

Shelton means a renewed running attack

Of course, when Brian Allen was healthy enough to return to the football field, Shelton was returned to the bench. But the lesson from those three ‘starts’ was not missed by us. So how do we make the grand leap from extending the backup offensive center to transforming the LA Rams 2022 offensive line?

If the Rams do not extend Allen but do re-sign Shelton, that could be a clear indication that the Rams are looking to improve their ground attack. With Shelton aboard, the Rams would be wise to extend OT Joseph Noteboom, a player who is also rather good at pulling and blocking downfield. From what we observed against the Minnesota Vikings, the Rams could install A.J. Jackson in at left tackle, install Noteboom at right guard, and Shelton in at offensive center, and then simply use the 2022 NFL Draft to replenish the ranks.

If the Rams bring back Allen, the initial impression would be that the Rams do not value the running game as much as years past and that the team will likely emphasize their passing potential throughout the offseason. While I would prefer the team to bring back Shelton, I could see reasons to focus on Brian Allen instead.

It’s really quite simple. If the Rams wish to run in 2022, they will put Coleman Shelton in as their starting center. Anything else means the emphasis will remain on QB Matthew Stafford’s arm.

Yep I think Shelton's the guy. They just need to draft a depth center or find a reclamation type for depth.

I agree, and with another off season for Shelton he should be a little better also. Keeping Shelton and walking away from Allen would allow us to possibly upgrade at OG also. I'm assuming we get Noteboom back around 8m/per also

Les Snead sees some cap flexibility through restructures, but not a lot

if you look at the Rams’ current salary cap situation, it appears bleak. They’re $21.6 million over the cap right now and have several starters hitting free agency. But there are ways for them to create space, which they must do by the start of the new league year on March 16.

Restructuring is an obvious way to free up some money, but Rams GM Les Snead doesn’t see a lot of opportunities to tweak players’ contracts.

“There’s not a lot of restructuring,” Snead said this week. “We have some highly paid players and there’s a few that we can maybe renegotiate or redo. But if you look at our team, there’s a lot of players that probably couldn’t necessarily be restructured to help us. That’s why we have to definitely rely on – ironically, based on everything that’s been said this year – the draft. The draft is very, very important to us.”

Jalen Ramsey and Cooper Kupp are candidates to have their contracts restructured, with each move freeing up about $10 million this year. But by doing that, the Rams will put money on the cap in the next few years, essentially kicking the can down the road and delaying their bill.

By drafting well, the Rams can help fill out their roster and still keep high-priced players, but Snead doesn’t expect many players to have their contracts restructured this offseason.

“We definitely use the draft because when you don’t necessarily have players you can just go open them up and give them a signing bonus to create cap room and push it down the future, it just limits you a little bit,” he said.
