I will start on a positive note.... I thought the team played great today overall. Getting the INT in the 4th QTR was what this defense has been missing,
I spend a lot of time on social media during the game defending the D-coordinator from people wanting him fired after the first series of each game. The Rams have been giving up approx 20 points per game and today they gave up 19. Even though they couldn't get to Flacco through the first 3 QTR's, they caused enough incomplete passes to turn the game around. Through the first 10 games, the Rams were last in pass break ups and now have the most pass break-ups in the last 2 games.
On to the main subject. I saw some inconsistency in Ernest Jones over the past month on some plays and decided to watch a little closer. Today his play was atrocious. ON the first Browns drive, 1st down....the running came out of back field and about 5 yards up filed. HW caught the ball in front of Jones and managed run around him and gain an additional 8 yards. Then, the play before the TD, they ran the ball which looked to be designed to the A gap on the left, the BAck cut back right and got about 6 yards with B. Young chasing him down. Jones chose to fill the supposed gap on the left side, but Rosenboom was already there ; they ended up about 5 feet from each other and then Jones got blocked by one of the O-linemen. Young may be responsible for any back side cuts, but he is getting blocked from the start of play, Jones is not. Next play, Flacco rolls to the right and throws back the to RB for a TD. Jones just stood in the middle of the field watching the play happen.
This may not have been his responsibility, but on the Browns TD in the second half, the throw to the TE who crossed from the right to the left, the defender in the picture trailing the play is Jones.
The Stat sheet shows that he lead the team in tackles, but I have never seen such an average performance from one of our supposed leaders and best players.
Did anyone else see this? Or, do I need to lay off the Fudge brownies during the game?

He had some really good plays too.

He is definitely an up and down player.

But is so much better than Reeder and Rozeboom who are just awfully slow.

Yes. I saw two plays that he looked lost on ... I won't do specifics until I see the game again (watching SNF) but
he's been in a slump. Started the season very good, high level of Play (Pro Bowl level) but today was not good.

I remember one coverage play and another he overran his gap--ball went behind him (trying to do too much??)
His blitzes not that effective today...got hooked up on a couple

I have to see more to comment on your specific but I think at least one of your plays is one I remember.

He may not be 100% healthy, coming back from injury

Personally, I'll give it a pass. Everyone has their shit games, I could name every player on the team and name the specific games, some dissapoint every game (lol), but as long as he gets out of his funk, I feel we should be ok.

From what I saw, Jones had a good game, he was making lots of plays. Maybe I'm completely off or something?

I wish we could find another London Fletcher in the middle… Jones is decent but very inconsistent

IMO he makes a few plays a game but is overall a liability. I have seen worse but his run defense at times is embarrassing.

He's never going to be in that Warner class I'm afraid, but then again few are. I think he's a solid 3 down offball guy though and that's not a bad place to be.

ILB isn't a spot where you need to invest very much, but if you can find those round 3 difference makers they can really juice your defense. Usually the guys who test real well with mobility can go early but it seems to me like the round 1 types generally disappoint. So I wouldn't want to go draft one early or anything but I would like to see some talent added.

They can go with more of a weakside type like Barrett Carter, who I think is going to be a really good pro with his ability to do different things. Or identify a SS who is a run enforcer with some man coverage basics. And then that addition goes next to Jones.

Or they can take a shot at a guy who might replace Jones. I think the Rams are comfortable coaching Jones up and trying to get the most from him so I figure if anything it would be the weak side they replace. But if that happens and the player is good I think there's a better than even chance Jones ends up relegated to being the two down guy and bulks up.

I here you .... regarding Reeder, he covered the TE on a pass up the middle near the end of the 1st QTR. It was completed, but he was right there with his hand on the ball. Not sure he could've been in a better position.

Lake is injured. He’s a smart player and good tackler. The defense misses him imo.

Jones is very inconsistent. It’s why I’ve said that I’m not that impressed early in the season. I miss Wagner from last year. Maybe he spoiled us.

Young has a weakness that I hope he can learn to overcome. He struggles to shed blocks. Same thing in his pass rushes. He needs to take AD’s knife fighting class or something to get better at knocking the hands down.

Run defense was very good beginning of season. Slumping, maybe because of injury. Today he was not good overall, but need to see the game again. His liability is coverage.

The defensive front was definitely gassed today. We need better rotation depth to hold up vs the run games. They can get by at times, especially when teams fall behind. But determined run calls can wear them down.

Wow. Could not disagree more with this.

He’s been our second best defensive player this year. When he was out, it was very noticeable.

Don't the Rams treat ILB like safeties? We'll find a new one every couple of years. We've had 4 in 8 years. Ogletree, Littleton, Reeder, Jones. But I don't see this liability mentioned. He has made some timely plays at crucial times. We could do worse....see the list above. Having said that, who wouldn't love a Fletcher II or a Ray Lewis or a Levonte David?

I find it somewhat amusing that the Rams win a big game and posters choose to point out a few missed plays by one of the Rams leading tacklers. Talk about knit picking!

just an fyi - Troy Reeder faster 40 time than Ernest Jones.

Reeder is a JAG but he isn't slow.

There is a noticeable difference in the line when AD isn’t on the field. They definitely need a few more pieces on the defensive front. I think it is a big need this offseason.

Jonah Williams hasn’t shown up much like earlier in the season. Bobby BrownIII flashes in some games. Aside from Turner and Donald, some of them are jags.
