If I had to guess Jones' agent and the Rams FO had two different ideas of what he's worth (but are open to see what others think before coming back to the table). The agent doing what he's paid to do is asking top dollar and the Rams are looking for something manageable.

1. Rams gave his agent permission to hopefully get contract numbers from other teams to see where the value falls from others outside the house.

2. This will help both sides negotiate to a mutually beneficial contract.

3. Obviously the Rams are open to keeping Jones but just like the Coleman Shelton you think your client deserves the moon and want to play hard ball? Guy signed a 1 year deal with the Bears. Not to smart on his agents part.

4. This is classic negotiations, anybody is worked in serious sales before knows this. Usually the first 2-3 are BS back and forths to feel each other out.

Not worried one bit.

My problem is when players take off a team off their social media which is such a idiot immature way for negotiating. Haven't seen any of our players do that yet and I'd like to say our culture as played into those shenanigan's not happening here so far.

I have to get a bit of a chuckle from this thread... a few people coming hard after Jones.

But in the end, it looks like the team was the one looking for a trade as much as anything else.
Only because Jones and his agent want an extension. Today he was not at camp.

This is an irritating situation to occur two weeks before the opener. It’s seems peculiar that the Rams tell Jones to seek a trade just out of the blue. Do you really think they want him off the books that badly. He’s on a third round rookie deal.

Say the Rams wanted Speights, or Rozeboom to take over at ILB. It would make more sense to have Jones split snaps with the other player throughout the season to ease him into starting. They could phase Jones out by midseason and keep him as security. Trading Jones wouldn’t create a large amount of cap space.

This contract issue is spurred on by his agent and not the Rams.

If I had a dollar for every time McVay said 'we'll take it one day at a time" I'd be rich.
On the conservative side lets say he has said that 10 times a day since being announced as HC for the Rams. Kind of thinking he did not have a mike much before that.

At one dollar a pop that would be around 28,000 large.

I"M RICH!!!

It says they haven’t spoke on a deal since may seems like rams don’t want him
I don't quite see it that way. As in that clear cut.

My assumption is that the Rams were trying to get his representation to a certain pay level but could not get that done. But both sides had apparently agreed he would play it out. This has been well reported thus far I'd say.

From there all of a sudden he is being told he can look for a team. And we find out the Rams have been trying to trade him. No idea how long they have been trying to trade him, which is different from listening to trade offers. But it seems to me like this has to do with the emergence of Speights.

Why Speights? Because they know who Hummel is. They know who Rozeboom is. They know who Reeder is. Speights is new to that equation, and has fucking killed the preseason. He fills well on the interior and has good range. How good can he get? Well the best way to find out is let him play. But Jones is in his way. Ok this is true however Jones is in his final season and has an iffy knee...

If he was truly a 2nd round trade worthy talent, there wouldn't be a contract negotiation issue
Yep... people are dreaming if they think your getting even a top 100 pick for a MLB with a nagging knee injury who likley wants a deal in the $10-12M range, and is on the last year of his contract. He is not Ray Lewis.

It's an interesting situation:

1) Rams have leverage here, gonna be pretty hard for him to miss game checks.
2) Not great timing to look for a trade but not the worst either, ideally would have been during offseason.
3) ILB is a devalued position around the league AND ILB has a talent dearth right now. Does that even things out?
4) He's got a tricky knee as of this offseason (if not before) which may make any attempt at a trade or contract offer less than ideal (does he even pass a physical with another team)
5) Tweeted did not ask for a trade then deleted it (could honestly be any number of reasons, don't think this is definitive of anything but best guess is it subtly shifted more leverage to Rams and agent asked him to take down).

My guess is Rams tabled contract talks after impass in offseason. Talks soft restarted end of camp, both sides still way off. Rams gave them permission to seek trade to see what value is on the market.

6) He's not at the media portion of practice today which points to something more going on (sit out, potential trade partners have been seriously ID'd)

I'd say an even 50/50 right now he's suited up week one with us.

This is the type of distraction the Rams don't need with the season about to start. Am I the only one pissed off about Jones' timing here. Don't get me wrong I have always liked Jones as a Ram but weather you choose to admit it or not this was a bullshit move.

Yeah I don't think Jones is driving this. I think he wants a paycheck but if he was gonna play hardball he would have done it earlier this offseason.

This feels like a Rams thing, where they realize they have a good option in house to replace him and hey why not get a pick now vice later on and then they can see what the kid has.

Besides, he's making about $2 million more this season and the Rams could get a little over $3 million in salary cap savings by moving him since they'll need all they can get when Aaron Donald comes back.:sunglasses:

Where have you been, he picked two weeks before the season starts to hold out for more money and not honor his current contract.
You're tiring... Very easily could be a case of the Rams knowing they won't be able to keep him at a reasonable price next year, and that he may not be viewed as irreplaceable for this year. So they told his representatives to go pursue a contract elsewhere.

The player and the club clearly stated that he did not request a trade and he has not held out of camp.

Today he was likley told to stay away until things get sorted out in terms of a potential trade and whether it happens or not.

Please link a report that says he held out. I haven't seen one. Thanks!

Instead, reports are that he didn't ask for a trade. It's the Rams that have been the aggressors on this in talking with a few teams. Are you gonna be mad at the Rams front office, too?
