This sounds much better than what was I guess speculated.

This sounds much better to me and Sean must have also seen how this wasn't playing well in the media.

Good on Sean to clear this up.
I mean, I only ever saw it reported that the Rams gave him permission to look at trade options if they want. It was everyone else that kinda ran away with the speculation and assumptions.

Either way, I'm saddened by this development. I get it from Jones side but was really hoping he'd play it out. Might still happen that way if Jones doesn't want to go to whatever shit team offers the most in a trade.

So this is more about what the Rams want. Do they believe Speights steps right in and can do what Jones does. If so what is the motivation behind this. what is the goal

Why do people think Johnson is starting?
I’d bet on Curl getting the Dot.

Could be a clear indicator that he is about to be traded

It certainly would be something the team would do if they had an offer on the table

If they trade him who starts. Very interesting to think about.

I would start Speights. Straight up.

Yep, they seem to hold someone out if they are working a deal or about to trade.

I think the FO was playing hard ball to a degree with Jones' agent and they are damn close to getting a deal done right now.

(doesn't take a genius to see it now he was reported not in practice)

I remember listening to an interview with AD he purposely had the negations go on until the season so he didn't have to practice.

I'm also wondering what happens if a deal doesn't get done. Do they cut him. With most teams that wouldn't happen but the Rams don't fuck around. Of course that also goes back to what they think of Speights. But even then without Jones you have Reeder worst case, and Hummel as well. You'll lose the run fit potency Jones brings but gain range.

No fucking way bro! I'm telling you this is just our FO with their grand experience and confidence working in negations with his agent who was probably getting to a point they needed make some progress and leaked we are open to them seeking a trade to assess value and that we aren't fucking around. I'd be absolutely shocked if he was cut tbh. Between him and Speights we are going to have some heavy hitting run support MF'rs this year!

I think it's pretty rare that relationships are truly broken in the NFL. And money cures all disagreements (though Rams aren't prob giving him a contract).

People understand it's a business. I could still see him play for the Rams for the last year of his contract.

Things like Akers are actually the rare occurrence in the NFL and he even got a second shot with us.

But him being held out (or maybe holding out) prob tips the scales 51/49 to him being traded right now.

I tend to agree but there is obviously something else afoot here with this situation. As in maybe the Rams told him they're gonna start eroding his snaps and working the depth options in to get a look at them in Jones' role. Stuff like that would in fact have potential to change the relationship and cause the Rams to offer him a ticket out.

There's almost surely more here than either side is letting on.

Right now we have 34 mill of cap space next year. That's with 60 total under contract, not including FA pickups,, draft picks, and Noteboom is the only VOID . Our depth and overall talent level are there and we are going to have plenty of room to start negotiating these guys coming up without giving the farm away.

I think if his agent isn't being unreasonable we get this done very soon.

Certainly possible. But ILB is rough man. You take a beating in there and Jones has that knee issue.

So I think it's even odds or maybe better that they love Speights (who is young, fresh legs, and excellent range) and want him in that role down the road. Question is when.
I thought they really are loving Hummel this year and have him as green dot when Jones is not out there? I love me some Speights, but the dude hasn't played much against 1st team offenses, let alone every snap of the game against them.
Dare I say cut?

Something strange seems to be up. This is unusual.
I'm be completely floored if he was cut. I think he's a top 10 MLB and certainly has some value in the trade market at minimum.

I'm pretty disappointed in the team and Jones' camp to have this happening just before a crucial opening game against a rival who knocked us out of the playoffs. Not to mention, this defense was to be led by Jones with AD's departure. Instead, we get this....

What the issue here is that the trade stuff shouldnt have been leaked, and likely was just a conversation with an agent.
McVay clearly came to Jones defense, there's no bad blood there.
The dude is a solid ILBer and will be a key performer for the team

Certainly possible. I'm not ruling out anything. We have a new DC laying down his law on that side of the ball, and he's gonna pick the guy he thinks gives him the best chance. If Jones is around this season he'll get most of the snaps. But it is possible they want to give Hummel a go at the Mike. Personally I don't think he'll hold up in there but I could see it.

I keep coming back to range from that Mike position. That is Jones' weakness. And it also happens to be a strength for Hummel as well as Speights. I don't think that is a coincidence, in conjunction with all this howdeedoo about Jones being offered a trade. I suspect the Rams may see someone else in that role other than Jones.

I think most of us anticipate Curl and Johnson as the starting safeties, with Kinchens getting worked-in during the season and possibly becoming the starter next to Curl at some point.

Are you expecting something different?

Maybe so. But it feels to me like something changed between him and the Rams. We'll see.

I also don't think the rams would give him away as if that's the case you let him play and get a comp pick especially without a 2nd rounder next yr. So either it's the chess game or they are targeting someone in particular. I don't think they have to take anything less than a third or a player that's equal. Or again let him play out the year and get the comp the guy is most definitely not a cancer type player

Compensatory pick is not a given; and it would be a 2026 draft choice.

That still only counts the top 51 salaries though.

In any event, it comes down to whether they value MLB.

Hey, they will need to sign some young guys in the next few years, but they also might want to go after a top caliber CB in free agency next year. Or maybe trade for a LT. They might need a WR next yr if Kupp were to decide to retire.

They likley will only have one top 75 pick next yr so FA will be an important way to add to this roster next yr. They might not want to tie $10M up on the LB position, especially a guy that has had some injury issues.

Hey, maybe they go throw big money at Dak if Stafford retires..

Ok, just kidding on the last one.
