@Mackeyser It's easy to dump on the interior of the oline but Whit and Hav struggling has certainly affected things too. To be honest, I expected Whit to decline somewhat (I'm not saying he's trash! - just that he's less effective than last year). What I'm pretty disappointed in is Hav taking a step back.

The way the Bears are going I bet Mack probably wishes he was still with the Raiders. Especially since they marched over 90 yards against that “vaunted” defense a couple of weeks back to beat them.

Any D that's on the field for 40 mins a game is gonna wear down and they're wearing down already.

That D fresh is a monster. Make it play for 40+ mins a game and by week 6, they're gonna start breaking down and having injuries. Their DL is already feeling it.

Well, Demby even when everything lined up was just awful. I mean...really, really bad. Like rookie Greg Robinson bad.

Also, I've been very clear that a significant portion of their struggles has to do with the specific ZBS they use and how it creates open lanes to the QB or ball carrier.

I just rewatched the game. Blythe is absolutely awful. He is a total waste as a run blocker. Edwards is better than him already.
That's okay Maxie, there is a plan to replace Blythe too.

How many holes did he open in the run game? I didn't see many. The pass blocking was better but it felt like the Rams kept in an extra man or two
I saw several. He and Whit were pushing guys aside, from my perspective.

Rookie David Edwards could help Rams answer questions on O-line

Joseph Noteboom was among the many Rams players who suffered significant injuries in the last two weeks, tearing both his ACL and his MCL, thus ending his first season as a starter. It was viewed as a big loss for a team with an offensive line that had already been struggling mightily, thrusting rookie David Edwards into the starting lineup.
Edwards took over at left guard on Sunday against the Falcons and promptly had the task of blocking Grady Jarrett – one of the better pass-rushing defensive tackles in the league. Of course, he didn’t go at it alone, getting plenty of help from Brian Allen and Andrew Whitworth up front.

As difficult of an assignment as that was for Edwards, he stepped up to the plate and proved plenty capable of starting at left guard the rest of the season. Jarrett was mostly neutralized, failing to record a sack or tackle for loss, and hitting Jared Goff just once in the game.
It’s obviously still early in Edwards’ tenure as a starter, but he has the makings of a quality offensive lineman – something we saw during his time at Wisconsin and in the preseason. In his debut Sunday, he received an overall grade of 60.9 from Pro Football Focus. It may not seem like an impressive mark, but it’s the highest grade by a Rams guard this season. That list includes Joseph Noteboom, Austin Blythe and Jamil Demby.

What shouldn’t be lost in all the discussion surrounding Edwards’ performance is the fact that this was his first time playing guard in a meaningful game. He played tackle at Wisconsin and didn’t switch over to guard until Aaron Kromer began cross-training him in camp this summer.

Sean McVay complimented Edwards for making the transition look easy.
“I was really impressed with his poise and maturity for a rookie,” McVay said. “You’re talking about a guy that’s played the tackle position at Wisconsin and to be able to seamlessly transition inside to left guard. … Seemed like they protected really well all day, did a nice job with communication, and I’m excited to look at the tape, but it feels like he did a nice job today.”
Noteboom is another player who came into the NFL as a tackle, but transitioned to guard this season. He still has a future at left tackle once Andrew Whitworth retires, and the emergence of Edwards could help solve one of the Rams’ biggest issues on the offensive line.
If Edwards continues to play well at guard the rest of the way and Noteboom recovers in time to start at left tackle next season, Los Angeles’ offensive line might not be a huge problem in 2020.

Re: the OTs... I think once they get the interior sorted the OTs will benefit. Teams early on knew Goff had zero interior pocket to step up into which enabled those wide rushes. If Goff can step up into a nice pocket going wide takes you out of the play.

Snead will draft two OL'ers in the 2020 draft. A true highly talented RG who Kromer desires will be drafted on the 2nd day of the draft. Just in case anyone wants to know...this is how I see our future initial starting 2020 OL.

STARTERS
LT- Edwards 23/2
LG- Corbett 25/3
OC- Allen 25/3
RG- Brewer 23/2
RT- Havenstein 28/6

Reserves
Swing OT- Evans 23/2
Swing OG- Kolone 25/2
Center- Shelton 25/2

PUP
LT-Noteboom 25-3

Later on in the 2020 season Noteboom should be healthy enough to start @ LT. David Edwards will move back into the LG post with Austin Corbett moving back to be the top swing OG reserve.

It seemed like the Falcons didn't attack Edwards on every play. A lot of passing plays he was helping Whitworth. He was late at times. I didn't notice a lot stunts.

One thing for sure he seems nastier finishing blocks even if not in front of his man. Played through the whistle.

Very likely his ankle is bothering him-NFL culture says you don't use the injury as an excuse.

"NFL culture" maybe, but an injury that physically limits an athlete from performing is a reason, not to be confused with an "excuse".
Guys are expected to play through pain. When a guy is hurt and the team lacks a replacement who could perform in his place, he has to play through it and deserves some level of support and understanding from fans.

Thats exactly where im at with big Rob.

I just went back & rewatched the entire first half paying close attention to the 3 interior OL posts. I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw ongoing on the left side of the OL.

The Good News....
Cancel the tryouts & the searches. Snead & his college scouts have delivered him what he needed.
The Rams have NOW found a replacement for the departed veteran Rodger Saffold @ LG. Rookie David Edwards is bona fide! (y):giggle:

The bad news ....
RG Austin Blythe overall play has degraded badly this season. I believe he had his worse game of the season this past week in our win over the Falcons...& he was awful against the 9ers.

I know his help & assistance in making line calls with center Brian Allen is greatly needed however he is mostly unsuccessful way too many times. He is very limited physically & is slow to his blocking assignments which means he misses his blocks. He may need some down time to get back to full health from that ankle & knee injury against the Saints. I just don't know.

I do not advocate for OL changes in starters but the time is coming shortly where his play will mandate a change @ RG.

LG David Edwards displays "locked in" mentality in first career start

Late in last Sunday's game against the Falcons, Rams WR Robert Woods wanted to check on LG David Edwards and ask him how he was doing.

Why? Because Woods seemingly hadn't heard a word out of him up until that point.
"He had that mindset all game, he was so locked in," Woods said. "Fourth quarter, I looked over and I'm like, 'Yo, what's up David? You didn't say nothing all game,' because he was over there dominating."

Yes, Edwards was that focused during first career start. He said his mindset was intentional.
"After the first couple plays, it felt like I eased into it and was able to kind of quiet my mind, let me technique (work) and just go play," Edwards said.

It was a performance that garnered praise from teammates, coaches and a national expert alike. Per scouting service Pro Football Focus, Edwards' grade of 60.9 against Atlanta marked the highest by a Los Angeles left guard this season.

"I thought he displayed really good poise and maturity for a younger guy making his first start, especially when you look at just the sliding inside at that guard position, things happen a little bit quicker," Rams head coach Sean McVay said. "I think he did a nice job. I think he’s only going to get better. I thought he played with great length and protection. He did a good job getting his hands on guys and I think that was a big part of why we were able to keep (QB) Jared (Goff) clean most of the day."

Similar to last week, Edwards credited Rams starting left tackle and 14-year NFL vet Andrew Whitworth for helping him adjust and prepare.

Edwards primarily played right tackle during his Badger career and didn't begin playing left guard until he got to Los Angeles. Playing alongside Whitworth made the transition much easier.
"Anytime he talks in a meeting, on the field, you take notice, take notes and try to absorb it, because the guy has played so much football," Edwards said. "Having him, especially (Sunday), just to be able to learn and bounce stuff off of (him based on) what I was thinking was awesome. He was great, too."

Unfortunately for Edwards, he didn't have any family members in attendance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He said they were unable to make it because his younger brother Joe had a championship game and his father David is one of the team's coaches.

If Edwards plays like he did last week, though, it's safe to say they will have plenty more opportunities to catch him in action."He played really, really big time for us," Woods said.

Awesome quote right there. And I'm telling you guys (I've mentioned this before and yes I doubt I am the only one lol)... Whit will retire and join the Rams' coaching staff this offseason. I am sure they have already let him know he's got a job as an assistant if and when he hangs 'em up.

Re: Edwards I think the Rams hit it out of the park with his selection. He's gonna be in horns for a long time wherever he ends up on this line.

Agreed Boni. And what do you think will happen when the Rams go that route? Evans? Brewer maybe?

This broken record about Demby being awful is getting old. Awful is Blythe who is in his 4th year and still plays like crap. Don't believe me? I pointed out all the issues during the NFC Championship game but everyone keeps giving Blythe a pass. Well go back and really look at Blythe's play against a mediocre Atlanta team. He blows 2 maybe 3 (at least) blocks that blew up plays and that was just in the first half alone. Quit believing PFF and look at his play in the game. He's crap just like PFF who said Peters was a top CB.

Demby in his last game against a better team played better than Blythe did against a mediocre Atlanta. Hell they even showed his poor play on replays and even mentioned once by the announcers how he simply couldn't get out and make his block on a run play I believe. With Edwards playing well at LG Blythe has returned to being the weak link in the o-line. He must have something on Kromer to keep his job. If a rookie playing a position he's never played out played Blythe what does that tell you? Demby isn't a starter, in fact he was inactive, but Blythe is a starter and he sucks.

Kromer has changed a lot of the blocking schemes to what looks like gap blocking. But the o-line technique isn't sharp and the RB's are missing the gaps being opened. For example there was one play where Gurley didn't see the gap created inside and tried to bounce it outside and got snuffed. It was even pointed out by the announcing team. So IMO the run game is a work in progress and their gap blocking technique and the RB's awareness hopefully will improve after they have time to work on it during the bye.
