3 Men Face Charges After Going On ‘Treasure Hunt’ In Sewers Below Flatbush

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Three men face charges after allegedly going on a treasure hunt in the sewers below Flatbush.

The suspects were pulled out empty handed from the sewers after their four-hour adventure at East 35th Street near Avenue H Wednesday night.

“God knows what they were looking for, and damn sure I wouldn’t be crawling through the sewers of New York,” said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.

Marquis Evans, 21, Damien Nieves, 35, and David Hannibal, 45, face trespassing and reckless endangerment charges. They apparently went into the sewer with metal detectors to help find valuables, officials said.

Evans, a Department of Environmental Protection employee, allegedly gave the other two access to the manhole. Securing the manholes is challenging due to the number of them.

“We’re not going to weld them all shut,” Bratton said. “Any idiot that wants to crawl below the streets unfortunately can do it by prying.”

The police were alerted to the incident by a citizen who saw them pop the manhole open and climb in. Bratton praised the caller for following the “see something, say something” adage.
Undoubtedly they were motivated by all the kids who swallow a quarter and have to wait until it passes. Just think of the number of kids in New York who eat change. They could have made upwards to $27.00 if they were down there for a year or so. Genius.

MYSTERY: Who’s wearing dark cloak, dropping raw meat on playgrounds?
BY OLAF EKBERG

At first glance, a person accused of dropping raw meat on playgrounds in the Gaston, North Carolina area could easily be Emperor Palpatine from “Star Wars.”

Diane Turbyfill, a reporter for The Gaston Gazette really wants to know after a photo was snapped of the suspect through a person’s window blinds.

Some say the figure is lurking around the Hudson Woods apartment complex and dropping raw meat near the playground.

“It looks like someone is deliberately trying to create havoc,” she says. “I think it’s pretty ugly and irresponsible if someone is just trying to get attention.”

Cops: Drunk Man Had 10-Year-Old Drive His Truck

(NEWSER) – Police say an upstate New York man had his 10-year-old drive his pickup truck while he was sitting in the passenger seat drunk. The Times Union of Albany reports that police in the Saratoga County town of Stillwater were contacted by a motorist on Saturday who saw the child driving the truck on Route 9P. Police say officers pulled over the truck and found that the 10-year-old was behind the wheel while his father, 46-year-old John Barling of Saratoga Springs, was intoxicated in the passenger seat.

Police say the child was picked up by a relative and Barling was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and permitting unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Saratoga County Child Protective Services was contacted by police. It couldn't be determined if Barling has an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Animal rights activist beaten with duck

Madrid (AFP) - An animal rights activist was beaten with a duck by a Spanish woman defending one of the country's most bizarre and controversial festival traditions.

The man was whacked with the bird while he filmed the annual "duck chase" in the Catalonian seaside town of Roses, where every August ducks are thrown into the Mediterranean and then caught and brought back to the shore by swimmers.

"Continue, continue. Continue to abuse, I am filming you. A little bit of empathy for the animals. They also have a life, like your children or your family," the man who was filming can be heard saying in a video of the incident released by animal rights group Animal Rescue Espana.

The footage shows a young woman wearing a white bathing suit attack the man with a duck -- holding it by the legs as she repeatedly lashes him with it.

As the attack goes on, animal rights activists gathered on the shore can be heard chanting, "You would not do that to your dog," before they were removed by police.

Every year since 1918 about 50 ducks are thrown into the sea in the town north of Barcelona, with swimmers then racing in to catch them and bringing them ashore however they can.

But after Sunday's incident, the town's mayor is mulling putting an end to the "duck chase".

Interviewed by local online news site Emporda, the mayor of Roses, Montse Mindan, prosposed "holding a referendum next year on what residents think, if they want to keep this festival, a tradition that will celebrate its centenary in two years."

- 'Pain, fear and suffering' -

While the ducks are not killed, Animal Rescue Espana said they suffer "stress, internal hemorrhaging, pain, fear and suffering."

The group launched a petition on the Change.org website demanding that Roses ban the "duck chase" as well as bull runs.

The petition has received over 10,000 signatures since it was launched on August 14.

Spain has many controversial animal-based traditions, often in honour of patron saints, which animal rights groups argue are cruel.

Bull runs, where people run ahead of a pack of half-tonne fighting bulls, are a part of summer festivals across the country, the most famous during the San Fermin feria in Pamplona.

At least seven people have lost their lives at bull festivals since the beginning of July, including one man who was gored in the neck earlier this month while filming a run on his mobile phone.

Festivities at the annual San Antolin festival in the Basque coastal town of Lekeitio revolve around a contest where young men battle to pull the head off a dead goose as it is dragged on a pulley across the harbour.

Previously a live goose was used.

Villagers in the northern village of Manganeses de la Polvorosa used to hurl a live goat from the top of their church tower to honour its patron saint but the practice was banned in 1992.

Feds to Stop Calling Midget Raisins ‘Midget’
Removing word from U.S. standards after complaints from activist group
BY: Elizabeth Harrington

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a regulation on Thursday to stop referring to midget raisins as “midget” after an activist group called the term offensive.

The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) issued the proposed rule, announcing the U.S. “Standards for Grades of Processed Raisins” would eliminate all five times the word midget is used. Midget has long been used to describe the differences in sizes of California raisins.

“The action would clarify AMS grade standards by eliminating the use of the term ‘midget,’ while consistently using the term ‘small’ for raisins graded in that category,” the USDA said in the proposed rule. “The industry has used the two grade terms interchangeably for years. The proposed grade standards would be applied uniformly by all handlers.”

“These changes would modernize and clarify the standards by removing dual terminology for the same requirement,” the agency said.

The government said the change was prompted by a request from the Little People of America, a nonprofit membership organization for people of short stature.

The group wants to eliminate the word “midget” from society, and zeroed in on the raisin classification, although they said it was a benign use of the term.

“On May 13, 2013, AMS received a petition from the Little People of America stating that they ‘are trying to raise awareness around and eliminate the use of the word midget,’” the USDA said. “The petition further stated that, ‘Though the use of the word midget by the USDA when classifying certain food products is benign, Little People of America, and the dwarfism community, hopes that the USDA would consider phasing out the term midget.’”

Little People of America has previously chastised the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, Marvin Lewis, for calling the Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel a “midget.”

The proposed rule changes standards adopted in 1978 that stated small or midget size raisins “means that 95 percent, by weight, of all the raisins will pass through round perforations 24/64-inch in diameter, and not less than 70 percent, by weight, of all raisins will pass through round perforations 22/64-inch in diameter.”

The rule said that the Raisin Administrative Committee (RAC), a branch of the USDA, “approved the removal of the term midget from the standards” last year.

Removing the word midget is the first regulatory action taken by the USDA regarding raisins since the Supreme Court sided against them in June, ruling that they can no longer seize raisins from producers to make prices go up, striking down a New Deal-era program in the process.

Cops Arrest Florida Man, 40, For Sauerkraut Battery On Girlfriend

There has been a sauerkraut attack reported in Florida.

According to police, Matthew Burnett, 40, "smashed a plate of sauerkraut" into the face of his girlfriend during an argument Tuesday evening at a Ramada Inn in Sarasota.

Burnett and the 36-year-old victim met online and have “been together off and on for ten months,” cops noted.

Following the sauerkraut assault, Burnett allegedly shoved the victim against a wall and then later grabbed the woman’s glasses off her face, resulting in a minor injury.

Pictured above, Burnett was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge and booked into the county jail (from which he was released on $500 bond).

Burnett, who manages a Sarasota restaurant, is scheduled for a September 22 court hearing.

Boy trips in museum and punches hole through painting
Taiwanese 12-year-old holding a drink stumbles and tears through 17th-century oil on canvas artwork
Oliver Holmes

A 12-year-old Taiwanese boy lived out a slapstick nightmare at the weekend when he tripped at a museum and broke his fall with a painting, smashing a hole in it.
Exhibition organisers said the painting was a 350-year-old Paolo Porpora oil on canvas work called Flowers, valued at $1.5m.

Footage released by the organisers of the Face of Leonardo: Images of a Genius exhibition in Taipei shows the boy – in shorts, trainers, a blue Puma T-shirt and holding a drink – walk past the still life, catching his foot and stumbling over.

He looks up at the canvas, shown later to have a fist-sized gash at the bottom, and freezes, looking around at other people in the room.

The organisers will not ask the boy’s family to pay for the restoration costs, according to Focus Taiwan news. It said the exhibition organiser, Sun Chi-hsuan, said the boy was very nervous but should not be blamed and the painting, part of a private collection, was insured.

“The painting’s bottom right is damaged,” Sun later told reporters. “The boy’s hand made contact with the artwork and left a hole the size of a fist.”

The exhibition, which also includes portraits of Leonardo, shows 55 paintings in Taiwan “gathered from the finest art collectors in the world”, according to the organisers.

“All 55 paintings in the venue are authentic pieces and they are very rare and precious,” a post on the exhibition’s Facebook page said. “Once these works are damaged, they are permanently damaged.”

Porpora was a leading still life artist who produced baroque-style paintings, often of fruit and flowers. The damaged work, 200cm tall, depicts flowers in a vase.

Sun dismissed later reports in Taiwanese media that the damaged art might in fact be a painting from another 17th-century Italian painter, Mario Nuzzi, valued only at about €30,000 (£22,000).

“There is nothing to respond to. Of course they are different,” he was quoted in Focus Taiwan news as saying.

The Web Gallery of Art, a database of European fine art, said Flowers was the only Porpora work that is signed and was painted in about 1660. Porpora was born in Naples but moved to Rome, where he worked for the Chigi family.

Tsai Shun-Jen, the chief conservator, said the painting was very fragile due to its age. “When we start working on the painting’s restoration, the priority is to strengthen its structure, not retouching the paint on the damaged area,” he said.

The boy joins a short, cringing list of art fumblers. In 2006, a man tripped over his shoelace in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge in the UK and smashed three 300-year-old Chinese vases. In 2010, a woman at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art fell into a Picasso, causing a 15cm tear.

Possibly the most egregious blunder was committed by the casino mogul Steve Wynn, who elbowed Picasso’s 1932 masterpiece Le Rêve. Wynn still managed to sell the painting in 2013 for $155m, a record sum.

In 2012, a Dublin man was given a six-year prison sentence for damaging a Monet painting in Ireland estimated to be worth €10 million (£7m) .

Andrew Shannon, 49, pleaded not guilty to punching through “Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sail Boat”, painted in 1874 by the French impressionist.

It took 18 months to restore the Monet painting, which is now back on display at the National Gallery. Shannon said he had been dizzy and fallen forward.

Sydney venue criticised for objectifying women after pictures posted on social media show tropical-themed opening night party with naked models covered in fruit

By Helena Horton

A bar in Sydney sparked outrage after using naked women as fruit platters.

Cruise Bar hosted a tropical-themed opening night party, and shared pictures of the women lying covered in fruit on social media.

They wrote on their Facebook page: "Amazing night to officially launch to the public. More pics to come tomorrow!"

However, members of the public weren't sure how "amazing" the party was after seeing the pictures of nude women being used as plates.

Jane Oakley wrote on the page: "Thanks Cruise Bar for so openly showing your contempt for women and contributing to the disgusting view that women's bodies are just a utensil. I won't be coming to your venue when I'm looking for a night out."

Ulrike ZImmerman shared a similar view: "Are you out of your minds? Serving food on women's bodies is not only tasteless but is also promoting a culture where women are objectified. This is the 21st century and it is NOT ok."

There were scantily clad male models at the event as well, but critics were quick to point out that they were not being used as mute objects. Nora Fries wrote: "They weren't lying on their backs like slabs of meat being offered to the public. And if they were, it'd be just as disgusting. It's not the nudity. It's the objectification of the human body, and for either gender, it's sickening."

We have reached out to Cruise Bar for comment.

Don't have a cell phone to take a pic with. The one neighbor has been feuding with the family across the street who live next door to me. This has been going on for many years. They stand out on their second floor porches and yell at each other. He calls the woman who lives there a slut and she calls him a pervert. They should either get a room or shut the hell up, lol.
