Don't forget about Jamil Demby in Rams' offensive line battle

Joseph Noteboom and Brian Allen are the front-runners to start at left guard and center, respectively, but don’t forget about Jamil Demby. He’s been overlooked in this O-line shakeup after the Rams added David Edwards and Bobby Evans in the draft.

Demby was drafted by the Rams in the sixth round a year ago, but he was surprisingly waived before the season started. The Lions quickly scooped him up and stashed him on their practice squad, but Los Angeles poached him in December, signing him to the active roster.

Demby provides excellent versatility up front, displaying the ability to play guard and tackle, including left tackle. In practice this week, he appeared to be the first guy behind Andrew Whitworth, filling in at left tackle with the rest of the perceived first-team offense.

He is a big kid with a mean streak, I just hope he has the footwork to play in the NFL. But playing LT in college leads me to believe that he may.

It appears the rookies are not in attendance at this OTA or will be arriving later....So for continuity, it makes sense to have Noteboom lineup at LG because that is where he'll be playing all year and Demby is the only player left to put out there. IMO, Demby more inside then out, but he did play LT for the Black Bears of Maine.

I honestly hope Demby put in some work this off-season. He was getting beat consistently in preseason last year no matter where he lined up. This was against 2nd and 3rd stringers.

Many have but some not. JD appeared much comfortable on the left side than the right side as a rookie. He was a pure left side LT player until he arrived here. Kromer had his head swimming after his arrival. Just too much for this small college kid who was not in good shape entering the NFL.

JD could play a huge role in several ways depending on just how much of his travels & 2018 experience he has absorbed plus just how much physical work put in 2019 offseason. If he has been smart & worked hard then his effort can pay off major dividends in TC. If not & he has been lazy he will be back in the WWC line soon enough. I suspect highly that Kromer does not suffer foolishness & has a soft spot for the hard work ethics of the underdogs.

At best,JD could have placed himself in a serious position to ....#1)-Contend to start @ one of the OG posts. OT Noteboom is said to be heir appointed to be the starting LG. However, that would remove Noteboom away from working @ the LT post with the very long in the tooth Whitworth during weekly practices. Thus depriving the old Whitworth of needed rest & healing time. I would expect that Whitworth will need even more rest time this season than what he had in 2018.

#2)- JD could fill the role that Noteboom had during the 2018 season..... looking at is the vital reserve swing OT position that will mandate being active game day. But that can't be because all the known experts & analysts that gave a profile on JD last year said he was going to have to move down to inside @ OG in the NFL. But that what they always say too. Nothing new there. #3)- If JD has not got himself into the best shape as possible JD still might end up as the reserve swing OG making the 53 player roster.

I do know this...from my own observations watching him playing the four preseason games. JD flashed much better @ LT than @ RT/LG/ RG snaps. JD likes to play LT & plays better in game action than practice. It will be interesting to see what happens here.

Don't forget about Jamil Demby in Rams' offensive line battle

Andrew Whitworth gave the Los Angeles Rams a boost this offseason by putting off retirement for another year and returning for the 2019 season. He brings stability and Pro Bowl play at left tackle, but he’ll be missing the guy who’s lined up next to him the last two years.

Rodger Saffold left in free agency to sign with the Titans, while John Sullivan had his option declined for 2019, making him a free agent. Those two departures signal a changing of the guard on the Rams’ offensive line with at least two new starters expected in the lineup come Week 1.

This can be viewed as a vote of confidence for Demby as Whitworth’s potential backup, or a sign that the team really likes Joseph Noteboom at left guard – more so than it does Demby. Regardless, it’s a good sign that Demby is getting work at left tackle in addition to playing guard. He played left tackle in college, so it’s not as if the position is foreign to him.

He still has a lot to overcome in order to be a starter at any spot on the offensive line, but Demby shouldn’t be forgotten. He should have a leg up on Edwards and Evans, despite their higher draft pedigree. Demby has a chance to play any position but center on the offensive line and a strong training camp will go a long way toward him emerging as an option.

Demby has an excellent chance to become a starting guard for the rams in the next year. Blythe and Boom go into training camp as the starters this upcoming year, both could be on the move after this year. Boom could certainly be the next LT for the Rams after Whit hangs it up. Blythe is an upcoming free agent, has experience at both G and C, could be in a good spot for a nice contract that the Rams may not want to invest. Demby will have competition for a backup spot on the OL this year, but does have the advantage of having a year in the system. He needs to show versatility this year, very important considering the Rams like to carry 7 or 8 OL on gameday.
The ball is in his court.

Rams/Kromer must be fairly comfortable with Demby as they released OT Darrell Williams the day after the draft. He along with Evans & Edwards are likely to receive many of the pre-season game OT/OG snaps, Kromer/McVay will get a long look at them all.

They might be putting JD out there at LT to see if he's gotten better. If not, they know early and can cut him again and move on to the next guy.

What will the 2019 Los Angeles Rams’ offensive line look like?

The Rams will need two new starters as LG Rodger Saffold and C Jonathan Sullivan have moved on.
By Elijah Kim

The Los Angeles Rams will have to find two new starters on the offensive line after being relatively lucky it’s not three with LT Andrew Whitworth choosing not to retire. LG Rodger Saffold III signed with the Tennessee Titans and C John Sullivan’s option wasn’t picked up.

Looking at of the Rams voluntary workouts, it seems that Joseph Noteboom and Brian Allen are going to get the first crack at replacing Saffold and Sullivan. OL Jamil Demby is lined up at left tackle, but this is probably most likely because the rookies aren’t there and Andrew Whitworth gets some veteran rest.

The Rams have intelligently invested a bit of draft capital over the last two drafts for the offensive line. Noteboom arrived via the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft preceding Oklahoma Sooners OT Bobby Evans in the 2019 NFL Draft third round. The Rams also spent Day 3 picks on Demby, Allen, and Wisconsin Badgers OL David Edwards in the last two drafts. I don’t think the above group (sub Whitworth for Demby of course) is what the Rams will end up with when the 2019 regular season starts.

Based on finding the best five guys, I believe the Rams will eventually have a starting lineup (from left to right) of Whitworth, Noteboom, Austin Blythe, Evans, and Rob Havenstein. Whitworth and Havenstein are the only positions somewhat set in stone. The interior is where things can get interesting. Blythe entered the league as a center and some, including myself, believe that is his best fit as he is undersized but is very smart and quick. In addition, his contract situation is interesting as the Rams could lock him in long-term at center for a better value than at guard; Blythe is set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason.

Noteboom showed flashes in his limited time, and I believe the staff will find a spot for him. Evans and Allen are the final pieces of this interior switcharoo. Rams Head Coach Sean McVay and Offensive Line Coach/Run Game Coordinator/Co-Offensive Coordinator Aaron Kromer will have to basically decide is the unit better with Blythe at center and Evans at right guard or Allen at center and Blythe at right guard. Ultimately, I think Evans brings a unique element to the offensive line as a more traditional power player and the right side (usually strong side for running) would be extremely powerful with Evans and Havenstein locking it down.

All in all, this is purely speculation on my part but regardless of my thoughts, the success of the last two seasons give me confidence that the Rams will explore all options to ensure as much continued success up front as they can.

Listening in to crossover podcasts like "Locked on Rams" and "Locked on 49ers" and "Locked on Cardinals," I crack up on the fake concern, as they speak of holes on the Oline...and my God, getting Henderson must mean Gurley BLOWS!...lol..The Niners dude says "we expect to have a big turnaround like you guys did a few years ago, going from 4-12 to 11-5 in one off season." Cards dude says "I know we were the worst team in the NFL last year, but the separation between the Rams nd the Cards isn't that great anymore...."

It's as though we have no depth and those holes still (if they ever did) exist and we did nothing in FA or the Draft. EVEN IF we didn't do anything but sign our own players that we did and had nothing else, I think we are a better team than both of those palookas....lol. The Frisco dude actually said that the Rams, Niners, and the Hawks would be vying for the NFC West at the end of the year. I discount Jimmy G. with extreme prejudice (don't know what that means exactly, but it sounds cool). He did welll for a few games at the end of a season two years ago, when the games mostly didn't matter. You know it's sad when Niners fans gloat about beating us that last game when we rested everybody....but seriously, people worshipped at the altar of Jimmy G. about that worthless game as though it proved something. GTFO.

Beating the Niners gives me a happy ending...

Demby a critical piece for depth on Rams offensive line
Myles Simmons

Last year, the Rams drafted a few offensive linemen - two of whom are now projected to start when Los Angeles opens up the season against Carolina.

You’re probably plenty familiar with left guard Joseph Noteboom and center Brian Allen by now, based on the coverage they’ve received throughout the course of the offseason on their progress in becoming starters.

But Los Angeles selected another player along the offensive line in that draft class: Jamil Demby.

A sixth-round pick out of Maine in 2018, Demby initially trained at both guard and tackle during Los Angeles’ offseason program last year. But then just before the Week 1 contest against the Raiders, L.A. cut Demby to make room for defensive tackle Aaron Donald on the active roster.

Perhaps a bit unexpectedly, the Lions claimed Demby off waivers and off he headed to Detroit.

But in December, the Rams brought him back, signing Demby off the Lions’ practice squad. Demby was inactive for the contests through the remainder of the regular season and the playoff run, but still gained valuable experience in the Rams’ system.

During that time, Noteboom and Allen were Los Angeles’ primary backups along the OL. Now, Demby is likely slotted for that role. And run game coordinator/offensive line coach Aaron Kromer sees Demby’s journey between the two teams last year as helpful for the 22 year old’s development.

“[W]e both appreciate each other more from that separation and coming back and that has allowed us to grow at a faster rate,” Kromer said during the offseason program.

How so?

“Jamil has played four or five spots -- actually, he’s getting reps at all five spots at this point, so we feel strongly about what we’ve seen from him in this offseason,” Kromer said. “Obviously it’s games that are more important than practices with no pads, but we feel really good about him.”

As a rookie, Demby cross-trained at guard and tackle, so center is a newer position for him. But providing that kind of versatility would make him a true “sixth man” along the offensive line for L.A.

The Rams have been quite fortunate over the last two years that no starter on the offensive line has missed a start due to injury. So having a player like Demby who can play each of the five spots can be a real asset to the club’s depth for the upcoming season.

Seems like Demby is being trained in as the jack-of-all-trades reserve offensive lineman, at least for the short term. Bobby Evans and David Edwards right there too.

I've made no secret of how I like Demby and see him on the roster for years. One of the reason's I find his cross training at center so telling and why I can see him starting at RG is because Blythe is in his last contract year with the Rams. Strong play by Sullivan and Havenstein largely offset many of Blythe's issues. Blythe has obviously lost the center starting job battle to Allen and he doesn't have the build for a starting OG. You would have thought that with his starting experience it would have been natural to simply move him into that starting role. But that didn't happen coupled with his contract year status, is why I viewed his tenure as a RG starter as being tenuous. He may start the season as the RG starter but would be surprised if he finishes the year there. It's why I think if Demby looks good in preseason he might get the start with Blythe being carried on the roster as insurance for one year.

I still think Evans is going to take over at LG next year when Noteboom moves to LT. Edwards IMO will likely become their primary swing tackle starting next year. I think Evans will be the swing tackle this year making Edwards inactive on game days while he works to iron out his issues.

The Rams have a true development plan for the offensive line. They have proven under Kromer to be building the line one season ahead. Grooming and building players into roles they see them fitting.

Love it.
