Here's what Breer (who may or may not be correct) said:

The Niners talked to the Lions in Mobile, but at the time were a little lukewarm and never made an official offer. They’d planned to circle back with Detroit after the weekend, but when things escalated Saturday and the Lions called back, the price had gone beyond what they were willing to offer (in part because they’re fine going forward with Jimmy Garoppolo). My sense is the 12th pick was never going to be offered.

So, taking that at face value, they were interested, but were not willing to outbid the Rams. And, of course, whatever sources Breer has, he clearly got the "fine going forward with Jimmy Garoppolo" think wrong (unless you take that to mean "for a year," which is, of course, not what Breer said).

You have, of course, glossed over the fact that they made a bigger offer for Rodgers (again, not a move for a team that is supposedly trying to get on a rookie contract for a QB) that was rejected.

Yes, talking about next 4 years, actually. Year 5 is more expensive, but reasonable.
And having any discussion on regrets about Lance now would be plain silly. We’re not actually doing that, right?

Well, we can certainly make projections and prognostications. That's what we fans do, right?

I, for one, think that the 49ers will regret giving up so much for Lance. I think he's the next Marcus Mariota, not the next Lamar Jackson.

The great thing is, if I'm wrong, you can dig up this post and throw it in my face in a few years. Of course, given that its the Whiners we're talking about, I'd assume we're both HOPING I'm correct.

His trade value has diminished. He's viewed as an oft injured quarterback who's far from top ten talent. I suppose if its between outright cutting him or trading for a late round pick, they might find someone who will take him with only one year left on his contract.

2. I don't really know what you're asking about the 49ers interest in Stafford. Clearly, had the Rams not made that trade, Shanahan would have tried to get him. By the time Shanahan knew it was a possibility, the Rams had already made the deal.

Per Stafford, he was about to head to Carolina for a medical when we stepped in with the big offer.

There was ZERO chance Stafford was gonna be a 9er.

Actually, on point #2, Shanahan might have wanted to try for Stafford, but the 9ers FO was grossly underbidding and was never really in the race... word was they offered 2 x 2nds and that's it... no Garrapolo.
