I mean, really? Cooper Rush was cut by the cowboys like 5 times. Not sure how anyone would expect him to surpass Cooper Rush, a guy who has been on the team, knows the offense for which he's a better fit, and had won games for Dallas (9-5 record).
He’s third string on the Cowboys. It’s not like any teams are begging for the Cowboys to trade him to them. Not sure how anyone would expect him to surpass Cooper Rush, a guy who has been on the team, knows the offense for which he's a better fit, and had won games for Dallas (9-5 record).
Why? When his skillset doesn't fit the offense? They found Purdy, signed Darnold, and were trying to win a Super Bowl. And a little read option is not a total commitment to a scheme.
Anyway,
My original statement:
IMO, Trey Lance has still not played in a offense geared for him.
I've not suggested him as a fit for Rams. Everyone is telling me what he can't do, but no one has or can refute the original statement.
Neither Dallas or the 49ers put him in a Greg Roman type system of which I believe he could have success. Strong emphasis on a running game using a read option or simply QB runs. One read passing game then run. That's all Lamar Jackson did initially under Greg Roman (not Todd Monken). And they showed commitment to the system as they made sure their backups also fit it.
Yes. He entered the league with very little experience in the passing game. And to try to immediately make him into a pocket passer or expect him to immediately have success in such is foolish. It may never happen.
And I don’t think Lance has a snowball’s chance in hell of succeeding in the NFL even if Satan himself was his offensive coordinator.@dieterbrock
Lance had a full training camp in an offense not geared to his strengths. Dallas didn't change their offense. They attempted to see if he could work in it.
@Elmgrovegnome
Why would teams beg to trade for a player whose skill set doesn't fit what they are running? It makes no sense. I don't know if this kid will be in the league later or not, but I still believe that in the run first type one read or half field type passing system Greg Roman operated for Jackson, he would have success. Am I saying that he'd be a superstar? No. But, he could do enough for his team to win games.
You may be right. You may be wrong. And I don’t think Lance has a snowball’s chance in hell of succeeding in the NFL even if Satan himself was his offensive coordinator.
And 2 full seasons.Lance had a full training camp in an offense not geared to his strengths. Dallas didn't change their offense. They attempted to see if he could work in it.
Putting in a package for a player and changing the entire offense to meet his strengths are two different things altogether. And 2 full seasons.
Again, Cooper Rush had the same opportunity.
Clearly they had other designs in the offense seeing that Lance ran 11 times in his 1 start.
At the end of the day, if it takes a particular offense for him to out play a journeyman like Rush, he clearly doesn’t have it
Now Trey Lance = Geno, Darnold and Alex Smith? They kept their starting job for a few years. Lance lost his quickly. You may be right. You may be wrong.
I'm sure there were those who felt the same about Sam Darnold, Geno Smith, Alex Smith and the like, too.
No. No. No. The point being made is that it was said that those guys couldn't play and were busts, too.Now Trey Lance = Geno, Darnold and Alex Smith? They kept their starting job for a few years. Lance lost his quickly.
Lumping Alex Smith in with Darnold and Geno is way off.
None of them were as inexperienced as Lance was in college. He was chosen based on physical attributes, not on his accomplishments or his proven football IQ. It was a complete miss.No. No. No. The point being made is that it was said that those guys couldn't play and were busts, too.
And the fact that those guys got more opportunity to play was merely because there wasn't an early injury and more importantly, they went to bad teams with no shot of doing anything. Lance went to a much better team in a Super Bowl window that wasn't in the position to wait for him to possibly develop.

It’s not far off from Drew Allar in 2023. He had 398 attempts, 25 tds, 2 INTs. You watched him against Notre Dame. Did he look like he has the mental capacity to play in the NFL?Totally agree.
His 28-0 int/td ratio really gained him significant favor. His running ability was the bonus. And now it appears he can’t pass on the NFL level
