Rams GM Les Snead Outlines Plan to Replace Von Miller

BY TIMM HAMM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED LA RAMS NEWS, ANALYSIS AND MORE UPDATED MARCH 26, 2022 12:40 PM

Von Miller's pass-rushing skills will be difficult to replicate

The Los Angeles Rams have indicated over and over again that their goal for 2022 is to "run it back." If that's the case, they've got a funny way of showing it.

The Rams have lost several pivotal players to free agency, including linebacker Von Miller. He registered five sacks in eight games with the Rams last season, and his relentless pursuit of quarterbacks is legendary

Moving forward without Miller, Rams general manager Les Snead seems to have a plan:

“Realistically, you lose Von Miller, it’s hard to say, OK, there’s another human being like Von Miller on the planet. There’s one of him, he’ll go to the Hall of Fame because of it,” Snead told reporters this week. “But with that being said, since 2017, we’ve been a team that consistently ranks near the top in sacks and pressures and things like that. It’s just come in different ways with different people. I think when you lose a player like Von, still want to pressure the QB, might have to do it in different ways with different people.”

Of course, the Rams aren't without talent after Miller's departure, with Aaron Donald leading the way on defense. And they could certainly scheme to get him freed up inside.

“Maybe it’s not in an OLB. Maybe it’s in someone that lines up next to Aaron inside. Maybe it’s another linebacker,” Snead said. “You’ve just got to do different things to attack protections and knowing that most protections, once the games get started, for the most part, they’re going to try to take away Aaron Donald.”

The Rams may have to promote from within with younger players on the roster. But that would be a lot to ask players like Terrell Lewis and Chris Garrett. Free agent linebacker Bobby Wagner recently visited the Rams, but left without a deal in place.

Snead seems to always find a way to pressure quarterbacks, whether is by signing an outside player to help, or utilizing the current tools on his roster, this time should be no different.

Like I said elsewher, this feels like “it” for premium FA’s. We got Robinson and maybe OBJ on a deal, but unless there is some trade coming, we are sucking eggs waiting for Gilmore or Wagner…l

Rams have their 2nd and 3rd next year.
The comp picks seem right.. and there's the possibility they get a 3rd for Rah getting a HC job next offseason.
Lots of capital next season.
12 picks feels like too many... so trades make sense.
So a minority coach hired as a head coach gives two 3rd round picks with one coming the same year as they are hired?
Yea I agree fully with what she's saying OS. The complexity and dominance of our pass rush in the playoffs was something to behold. It single handledly closed out 3 of our 4 playoff games including the super bowl. I would suspect that makes us more inclined to spend money on finding a vet across from Floyd. Rochelle/Long seem to be in a better place to start at CB than Hollins/Lewis seem to be at OLB.
Regarding the last part, what I don’t like is the depth at CB. Long and Rochelle and what? The next best is Deayon? That’s terrible. Adding first year rookies isn’t going to be quality depth either. Injuries happen frequently enough. I’d prefer a veteran be added to the CB ranks. Gilmore would be nice but anyone with decent experience works. Rochelle didn’t get enough experience last year, and was raw to begin with. Who comes in if he falters? If there is an injury they’ll have practice squad guys or rookies as second stringers. That’s rough for a Super Bowl contender.

Give me a veteran corner, preferably not named Apple sauce.

The thick safety unit might assist some at the corner unit. Looking around our DB's there is a reason for concern.

DC Morris is heavy with strong safeties types IMO. With a new DB coach, there might be some change-ups. Taylor Rapp/ Jake Gervase/ Antonie Brooks Jr. are all strong up close to the LOS but have poor coverage skills.

DC Morris prefers to play Nick Scott & Jordan Fuller primarily as his deep/free safeties. I believe Fuller is much better playing up than back. Terrell Burgess has been the odd man out at safety so with the corners being a big issue it's possible TB might be utilized in the corner cadre room.

Burgess is versatile and has the ability play the slot. TB has good feet & he is heady enough for zone action. He has a good burst too.

Working TB in as a Nickle Corner provides some help letting David Long back up Ramsey & Rochell would give four DB's who know each other. Easy UFA add-in the 28 yr old Donte Deayon & draft a few outside corners. I would also hope that a free safety would be drafted late day 3 too.

The slot has become a dynamic weapon position so I don't feel confident saying Burgess can play there any more, at least not in a competitive sense vs some of the guys he would draw. It made sense once upon a time to say, when he had all that hope coming out of the draft but now meh. I think he's talented but just not good enough to lock down a major role there. Put him in there now and he's gonna get worked by most matchups.

Ramsey factors in here too I'd think. Where do they see him next season. Do they want him inside bolstering the run defense or outside the hashes? Or travelling with the top draw? These things change week to week, granted, but they have to have a feeling overall where he'd best serve and how the pieces best fit and/or determine what they need.

If they want a slot (which I suspect) then typically those guys can be had easier than the outside types. But again that's changing with teams lining up more threat inside with big weapons like Kupp and Allen. Here's a list that shows the Rams bottom of the league last season in the slot yards against. Basically teams attack defenses where they're weak, and the Rams' weakness at the slot has been targeted which is why they moved Ramsey inside at times IMO, on top of him benefitting the run defense.

Ideally Ramsey & Rochell end up outside. And the Rams bring in a good slot type in the draft and hopefully a rush end with some upside/potential.

Once again Bonifay’d Excellent Post!!
I’ve always liked the way you view The Rams roster. We have our differences & I know I’m not always right.
What I’ve learned under McSnead which I seperate now because of how they do there own part to make The Rams great. I mean Mcvay almost left for the NFL TV Booth. Snisher was a thing, but IMO Fisher was to much of a Control Freak to allow Les Snead free-rein.
The other part of it is that when Les Snead can get a player it happens.I’m DUMBFOUNDED by who The Rams have traded for & signed with Mcvay as The Rams HC.

Just to add Bonifay’d is DD21 has been a good Ram. He was cut by The Rams though & found his way onto the roster. Now that he is a FA The Rams are going to let that playout for awhile?
I look at the Sony thing as well, but hard to predict what is going to happen there ?

Grant Haley CB
Tyler Hall CB

Kareem Orr DB ? He started a game for The Rams last year.If Murray was a real good passing QB it could’ve been ugly.
Jake Gervase keeps hanging around. He was playing in The SuperBowl.

A. Brooks is another player that will get a chance in OTA’s. I always find these players interesting. We never know for sure how things will playout.

D. Long needs to read plays quicker Imo. He has a ok skill set going into his FA(4th) season. A lot of times that is when the light has to go off for there careers.
RR31 supervises me on how much potential he has as a cover CB.
DD21 I’ve got to give respects to as I saw him in training camp take over for D.Williams & feel comfortable as a Zone Island cover CB.

Yeah, I understand that they have bodies, I just don’t like the quality and in some cases the lack of experience. This is not just a team. It is a team trying to repeat. We talked about this before. Minus the extra pressure Von created, there will be added pressure on the DBs. Plus they won’t have Weddle who made a big difference with his veteran leadership and intelligence.

What a :eyeroll::not::yawn:list it is.

In my eyes, very few of these remaining corners are worth making a phone call to. The ones mentioned in ROD have some large oozing ugly warts on them, the rest are way past their prime & are damaged goods like Gilmore.

One I do like is the 28 yr old 7 yr veteran ex Saint P.J. Williams he could be a good 4th corner.

Snead/McVay have drafted 2 corners out of 45 draft selections since 2017.:wow2::unsure:

It would be a different story in our corner unit today if Snead/McVay had picked CB Paulson Adebo/ Stanford CA instead of PR/KR/WR TuTu Atwell.

Adebo is a very good young starting corner for the Saints selected in the 3rd rd @# 76 last year.

Yeah.. the coach comp hits the first year. They don't need the full season to assess value.

I’d have preferred that too. He was on my wish list. Maybe corner wasn’t a need but it was a future need.

Nice thing with Ramsey is rams can use many of the FAs available because they won't have to be depended on in one on one coverage. They can be part of a very effedtive double coverage. Would like to see Rochelle get the start and if he works out then the CB FA can move to the slot.

Justin Hollins came out the gates on fire last year with 2 sacks and 6 solo tackles against Chicago.
He was injured early on and then came back in december. However when he came back his role
had changed into playing ILB here and there.

So we have Hollins, Terrell Lewis and Chris Garrett in house and
then whatever Snead can conjure.

Of the three I am hoping Garrett has spent his time getting stronger and improving his hands.
What little I saw of Garrett last year, I saw enough to see his speed translates to this level as well.
He can be electric

Yep, I thought that writer Timm Hamm missed his target on that title too.
You guys might want to type Timm Hamm's name into your browser and read his bio.

Dallas guy, with basically zero experience or qualifications to cover pro football.

Was a PI for 14 years, specializing in interpreting information on skip traces ... whatever the hell that is.

You cannot start eliminating options until AD's contract is done. IMO that is what is holding everything up. AD has to make a fucking decision on how long he wants to play. You can't restructure his contract without that decision being made. Once his contract is done then they will know how much money they have or don't have and that's when moves will be made.

IMO that is why Wagner is still waiting, why OBJ, and Michel are still waiting. I also think a trade for Hunter is still a possibility but without knowing how much cap they have the Rams can't make any moves. AD needs to shit or get off the pot, i.e. accept the deal they have offered or not. IMO the Rams probably want him to commit to 3 more years to make any restructure/raise work and AD seems like he doesn't want that. That's my opinion on how I read it. Once ADs contract is locked up I think the rest of the moves will be done quickly. I think Wagner is the second option but a long-term solution at edge is their primary option. The best possible edge that probably is available now is Hunter, though what that would entail is questionable. Wagner would be a short-term solution as the Rams don't have a first round pick to trade until 2024.

If they go with Wagner then IMO the edge opposite Floyd will be Lewis and Hollins. That isn't a bad solution in reality. Lewis is a good early-down, running down option with Hollins on obvious passing downs.
