Vermeil caught lightning in a bottle but then jumped ship under the guise of retiring, only to coach the Chefs for longer than the Rams. I will always be a little butt hurt over that. Of course, I have to consider who he was working for, so maybe a bit difficult to judge.
I always had the impression Vermeil was on the fence about returning and was quietly nudged, because of Rams fear
of losing Martz to HC gig elsewhere.
Been a long time ago and I may be completely off on this. I guess it was just the impression I had.

I was 16 in 1966 when Dan Reeves hired George Allen. To me Allen and McVay are very similar. Both coaches inherited historically bad teams and dramatically turned them around quickly, they are both famous for trading draft picks for instant talent, and both changed the whole culture and fan optimism.

McVay. Easily McVay.

I struggled finding the second-best; it was between Linehan or Spagnuolo.

Surprised at the poll results. I guess it is recency bias with McVay.

Gotta be Vermeil. He took a QB off the street and turned the team into a SB champion.

McVay is my fave -- still has much development to come which is exciting.

Soft spot for Robinson and Vermeil.

Chuck Knox is my favorite.

He made good players great.

So I could not vote. Other didn't feel right.

Of those listed McVay of course.

Vermeil kind of got lucky and played that well.

Robinson I really liked and felt confident he was our coach.

not really recency bias... Vermeil did win a super bowl = but also had only one winning season then spent most of his time coaching KC

Its far from a done deal - but a body of work is more important to me than one year.

Tough to pick just one.

I'd like to give some love to Martz though. I give him the majority of the credit for our only Super Bowl win. Plus... he got us back into another SB and we only lost because of blatant fucking cheating. If not for that fucking muffed punt... he would have had us in another SB too. He did all this while having a dysfunctional as fuck front office and owner who used the team as her only source of income. Pretty amazing.

I also love John Robinson, Chuck Knox, and McSlay.

It was one of those things that was repeated many times among Ram fans over the years, but it wasn't true.

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 17 – The St. Louis Rams' first home playoff victory in the city's pro football history had an immediate impact on the future of offensive coordinator Mike Martz. The Rams announced today that Martz, who was expected to be pursued as a head coach by other NFL teams, would become the team's head coach whenever Dick Vermeil decides to step down.

Vermeil himself initiated the move,
in which Martz will sign a two-year contract extension to remain as the team's offensive coordinator. Vermeil, 63, said he intends to quit coaching when his contract runs out in two years. Other sources in the organization said Vermeil could retire sooner if the Rams win the Super Bowl this year or next.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sports/nfl/longterm/1999/playoffs/articles/rams18.htm

Vermeil made a quick decision because he didn't want to be involved with the free-agency period that starts Feb. 11. He leaves with two years to go on a five-year, $9 million contract.

"I don't want to participate in that," Vermeil said. "I don't want to cut the squad. These are my guys."
