Could the Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl window already be closing?
By Sean Wilkinson
An aging OL and poor QB play may sink 2018, but the Rams might have bigger problems in the not too distant future
https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2018/...per-bowl-window-closing-jared-goff-sean-mcvay

With a flurry of acquisitions this spring, the Los Angeles Rams firmly pushed all of their chips to the center of the table for Super Bowl 53. They weren’t shy about it either, relishing in the media attention that it brought the team.

Nine months later and the 2018 Rams are at a crossroads that their 11-3 record fails to portray. The combination of consecutive losses, injuries, and poor play by key players has us rightfully questioning the Rams viability as a legitimate Super Bowl contender this season. Me? I’m looking at the bigger picture. I’m questioning whether the window that Les Snead and the Rams front office opened this spring is already closing on Sean McVay.

Father Time and the OL
The Rams offense is built on the backs of the offensive line. When they are playing well, Todd Gurley has gaping holes to run through and Jared Goff’s jersey is clean at the end of the day. When they aren’t, the offense gets ugly in a hurry.

The OL isn’t getting any younger either. The average age of the Rams starters is 30.4 and 4 of those 5 are not under contract past 2019. The Rams have rebuilt their OL several times in recent years, but the coming re-work is going to have a profound impact on the future of the franchise.

If the Rams can’t seamlessly rebuild the unit over the next 15 months, they could see Goff permanently devolve into what we’ve seen over the course of the Rams last two losses - which would close the Super Bowl window as emphatically as it was opened this spring.

Roster Turnover
Yes, I’m aware that the bottom half of most NFL rosters turns over from year to year. No, that’s not what I’m referring to here.Take a look at the list of starters who will be looking for new contracts soon.
Skill Positions:
Jared Goff: Contract year (pending 5th year option)

OL:
Andrew Whitworth: Contract year
Rodger Saffold: Unrestricted Free Agent
John Sullivan: Contract year
Austin Blythe: Contract year
DL:
Ndomukong Suh: Unrestricted Free Agent
Michael Brockers: Contract Year
LB:
Dante Fowler Jr.: Unrestricted Free Agent
Mark Barron: Potential Cap Casualty
DB:
Lamarcus Joyner: Unrestricted Free Agent
Aqib Talib: Contract year
Marcus Peters: Contract year
Specialist:
Cory Littleton: Restricted Free Agent
Greg Zuerlein: Contract year

That’s half of the Rams current starters that are coming due for contracts, plus a couple of specialists to boot. That’s a double edged sword. It gives the team a TON of financial flexibility, but also puts the pressure on the front office to retain the right players.

You simply can’t pay Aaron Donald AND Ndomukong Suh AND Marcus Peters AND Lamarcus Joyner. That’s not even considering Jared Goff or the aforementioned OL rework that needs to happen.

Some of these decisions will be easier than others. Suh was clearly brought in as a mercenary for 2018. The same could be said for Talib if the Rams decide to cut him loose after the season. Peters probably deserves a deal, but the Rams track record with paying DBs is.... not great. So not only will Les Snead and Co. have to retain the right players to form the core of this team, they’ll have to do it while simultaneously rebuilding the OL and figuring out if Goff is worth $25-30M per year. That won’t be an easy task.

Jared Goff
We’ve reached the elephant in the room. Who is the real Jared Goff? Until a few weeks ago, we were all certain that Sean McVay had him on a path to be an elite NFL QB - or at least close to it. As Goff returned to his mistake laden form that he showed as a rookie, we’re left to ponder whether the last few weeks are an anomaly or the beginning of a trend.

I don’t need to tell you that Goff’s been bad since the bye week. You already know that. But I can honestly say that I’ve been concerned about Goff’s accuracy for most of the season. It’s little mistakes like not leading a receiver enough, or slightly missing a window. Timing being off or mis-reading a defense and missing a potential explosive play.

Those kinds of mistakes aren’t critically analyzed when you’re scoring 30+ points on a regular basis. They’re still worth noting, but since the offense was achieving the desired outcomes... it was largely dismissed as a weakness of Goff’s and not a damning critical flaw.

These issues become exacerbated and a much bigger detriment to the team when Goff is under pressure. When he is consistently put under pressure, Goff has been horrid. He makes bad decisions, becomes inaccurate, and costs the Rams football games. With the Rams OL inevitably getting a rebuild in the next couple of offseasons, this is extremely concerning to me.

The Rams will undoubtedly pick up Goff’s 5th year option in a few months, buying them another year to determine whether he is the long-term answer for the franchise. And while the front office will play a significant role in forming the Rams future, the Rams franchise QB is ultimately who will determine how long this window will be open - for better or worse.

The Saints looked amazing against the Panthers ;)

This Superbowl is wide open.

Every team has concerns, including us.

We will come good again.

$37 M in cap space next year
$93 M in cap space 2020.
Could get dicey after that.
Every off season is important.
What the Rams do on the D side is key.
One thing is painfully clear.
They don't need a bunch of high paid guys to get the lack of production they have had on the D side of the ball.
Every team has to draft contributors to have sustained success.

The Goff talk is idiotic as well.
In a league where you have Mark Sanchez and Fitzpatrick still strapping it up considering walking away from a 24 year old QB who has been successful is beyond stupid.
All of these sort of articles forget one key piece....and replace him with whom?
Another rookie?
A Joe Flacco type FA?
Just vapid blathering.

What? We are talking about Marcus "burnt toast, who doesn't like to tackle, and constantly commits drive saving penalties" Peters right? Probably deserves a deal? How about NO

I'm not too concerned with the future, personally. Due to their unimpressive season so far Joyner, Barron, Suh, and possibly Brockers can be upgraded and not see any downfall in our production at those positions. Bc at the moment that prosuction is low. I will say I'd like to see Brockers stay for a lesser price and be a rotational player to help out the young bucks.

Whit and Sully already have their replacements. Again, two players I'd like to see as rotational players next season. They are getting older so they dont have much left in them and a possible super bowl birth may keep them around.

Extend Littleton, Fowler, Blythe, Talib (3 year deal MAX), Peters (he's proven he's not ready for that #1 receiver paycheck so shouldnt be expensive) and upgrade through the draft and free agency. Most of the extensions i see are not huge payouts. We paid our main guys already besides Goff.

Goff is the one guy, apparently, that it is ok to ignore the foundation of his success he has laid over the last two seasons, and focus on a couple bad games as evidence of the current reality. The media just seems lustfully anxious to return to the “Goff is a bust” narrative.

He’ll be fine.

And I love this “average age of offensive lineman” crap. As though that means anything.

Havenstein- young
Blythe- young
Saffold-still in his prime

In the wings:
-Noteboom- promising replacement for Wentworth.
-Allen-promising replacement for Sullivan.

How exactly are the Rams not preparing to transition their offensive line to be ready in 2020 and beyond?

And never mind that every team has this same reality, the Rams seem in better shape than most.

Rams can open up 61.5 million in cap space with only 1.75 million in dead money by cutting or not bringing back Suh, Talib, Brockers, Barron, Suh and Peters. Not all those players will depart, but the point is they have little long term debt commitments. Many of these guys have been disappointing and the Rams can upgrade through smart veteran shopping and the draft, at a lower cap hit.

Rams drafted two o-lineman in 2018 who they believe are future starters and should grow with another off season. Next year they're only missing a second round pick and a compensatory third. They've drafted well under this regime.

The idiot that wrote that article has zero clue into the long term cap ramifications for the Rams or how their front office is planning for the future

The "push all the chips in for this year" is just lazy reporting.

An accurate description of clueless "expert" assholes and their spot in the pecking order of the so-called media.

The people who write for TST are just like you and I who post their thoughts here at ROD. The only difference is they want to look like they are real sports jounalists and make it look like an authentic article. They are armchair QB's, with no journalistic training or background.

Reactionary prisoner of the moment stuff, unfortunately you see it everywhere concerning the Rams these days. I don’t really agree with the premise, I mean look at the playoffs this year as opposed to last. Vikings? Nope. Iggles? Probably not. Falcons? Nope. What does it mean? It means it’s hard to make the playoffs and there are no guarantees, but also look at the seahawks. If you have a qb you have a chance and it looks like they’ll be in this year, which is something the Rams hadn’t been able to say for a long time til last year.
There aren’t any guarantees especially in the nfc, every year you start over. I don’t know if anyone will ever do what the pats have done getting to the super bowl.
The Rams took some chances and the results were mixed but they are still in good position, and nobody ever talks about the fact that the cap continues to go up so who says you can’t pay Goff and Peters and someone else.

Even worse, Bubba. Having schooling, training, sometimes makes them just “frauds with a sheepskin”.

Heck, I’m proof positive of that. :)

No. The sky isn’t falling. If you look back coming off the big emotional win against KC at home with fireworks and heroes and all the hoopla surrounding a game in which all those points were tallied, I think the team was emotionally exhausted and their adrenalin was spent. We then travelled east and played against a very good defensive coach in Detroit and looked flat. The Lions helped set the defensive blueprint for the Bears and Eagles. I knew we were likely to struggle against the Eagles and I called it.

Still I believe the Rams will erect themselves and make adjustments. It’s better to find out now if we have weaknesses. Jared does however need to regain his mojo for us to win. He needs protection. His confidence is shaken right now. His next two games will need to be played with terrific grit and urgency in order to find the swagger he enjoyed earlier. That includes the entire team.

The Rams' window comes down to their defense. Snead whiffed on the defensive decision making of last offseason. What he does now will dictate how things go.

IMO if they go get Wade enough pieces the defense could quickly be on the upswing. Fix the damn defense and all will be well. And no more tired old vets who want to do their own thing.

Lol no he didn't. He brought in the right guys talent wise they just aren't executing. It can't all be on management. It's not like anyone was criticizing the moves in the summer.

I agree with you fearsome. We need good quality role players. To many expensive “chiefs” and not enough good value role playing natives make for mass pointing of fingers at some point. I hope we get it sorted out.

I doubt Snead signed anyone the coaches didn't want. If I'm going to blame someone it wouldn't be Snead. I choose to put more blame on Wade and his under achieving D than anyone else. I doubt anyone is on his roster that he didn't want. To many names that have played very well for other teams on that roster. And a few who played well for the Rams in previous years before Wade.
