I know I saw a post or two about this in another thread but as slow as free agency has been for us rams fans I thought some might have missed it.

Clay Matthews LB, Unsigned Free Agent

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said to "keep an eye" on the Rams in pursuit of free agent LB Clay Matthews.
Rapsheet added that DC Wade Phillips is a "big fan" of Matthews, an L.A. native who played his college ball at USC. While dozens of free agents have come off the board in recent days, we haven't heard a peep about Matthews outside of this report. Clearly Matthews isn't the dominant force he was early in his career, but the six-time Pro Bowler still has something left and would bring a strong, veteran presence to the Rams' locker room. The former Packer turns 33 this offseason.

I figured it would be ok to post the one rumor about the rams and free agency so someone that doesn't want to sort through 766 post can get on here and see the Clay Matthews rumors.

Would be Connor Barwin 2.0. Not a bad stop gap insurance policy for a few ganes .... That is if he is willing to come here cheap with maybe an incentive laden contract.

He might not have a ton left in the tank but if its a low dollars contract and he can be used in 3rd and long situations I think you could find a role for him.

Think outside of the box. Matthews has obviously lost a step, so he wouldn't fit as an OLB.

However, he could step in at ILB. He's a trusted veteran that understands gap responsibility, he plays at 255lbs, can help Littleton with recognition of plays, and is a solid tackler.

Obviously Matthews isn't what he once was. Still though, he would help with depth and pass rush at times. I saw a few GB games last year. Clay was still a force, better then his stat's would show. I think some might be under-rating him some.

Depends on the terms, preferably close to the vet minimum at best; he's still effective as a rotational player but will get gassed out easily.

Expect a lot of no huddling if he gets signed.

Rams need pass rushers. He can be a spot player getting rest so he can ball out when he is in. He has to be a candidate. Don't break the bank and get a vet that will be ready for the play offs. Donald, Fowler and Mathews putting on the pressure.

His team picture would be printed next to the definition of a meh signing. It's just that the Rams are so lacking in pass rush after AD.

I mean, Clay only had 3.5 sacks last year. But, that would've put him 4th on the Rams. His 12 QB hits last year would've been 3rd on the Rams.

I don't know how the referee-conspiracy crowd would react if he picked up another questionable PF call, like those 2 last year. Two questionable PFs aren't enough to call him a PF magnet, are they? Refs on the lookout for him?

He's just not all that great, but the questions TBD are: is he better than what we have; and what cost? At absolute vet min, sure give him a camp invite. More than that, it starts getting hazy.

Clay is better than what we have - sign him to vet minimum with incentives.
