I would watch him after the Panthers game, he started to cook again but still wasn't back to pre injury form.

Saying he was bad as anyone just shows me you weren't aware of what you were watching. Criticize his play sure but that statement is accuracy
49.5 51 and 64 pffgrade for lake in the playoffs...which is an average of 53..which is in line with what i said.

Going to have to enlighten me with some specifics of where he was starting to " cook"

Problem is bend don't break zone schemes work if you have a great pass rush. Fangio' Eagles won last year with a great pass rush. Plus, they had a great outside CB in Mtchell, and a very good slot guy in DeJean.

The Rams need at least one top caliber CB and a much better pass rush. One that doesn't just rely on one or two guys to get there. Once Young lost a step with his knee issues, the pass rush fell off big-time.
Mitchell and dejean (who i wanted the rams to draft) were both all pro.

I do wish we would have blitzed more - feels like the only game we blizted a lot was Tampa Bay and we fucked them up good.

However when your corners are avg players at best - you can understand why the coaches don't want to be sending the blitz.
Why not blitz more and take a couple of chances? Their WRs are wide open. No DB even close to them. It's like damn they have one good receiver and he's just choosing whatever hole he wants. At least smack their QB around a little and maybe get a TO once in a while.

good thing you posted that so we can remember this is the style that McVay wants, if Shula was to leave don't expect a change from the bend but dont break defensive scheme
The concept that McVay’s preference dictates the type of defense that the Rams play is laughable even for a TST wannabe writer to suggest. You play the style your personnel dictates. Rams have smallish, slow footed safeties and corners. They play soft coverage to try to make teams work their way down field. Press coverage with this secondary personnel would look like Darious Williams trying to trip up Shaheed in the opening drive on Sunday. Luckily he was able to trip him up to prevent the touchdown on the play but that’s what the whole season has looked like in the secondary. Rams have to invest some money in the back end of the secondary. Need for some speed has never been so great. McVay’s defensive philosophy will change once they get some players that they can trust in the back end of their defense.

Shula's running the defense that McVay prefers, the "soft zone bullshit" we all hate. If our defense is expected to take a leap sometime soon, there needs to be some investment made on that side of the ball and let the defensive coordinator open it up. I don't know if Shula's the guy to reinvent this defense but I'd be willing to give him the opportunity. But none of it matters if we keep doing the same thing over and over again.
Does McVay feel like changes need to be made? The rams had the 1st or 2nd point differential this year and the mighty Seahawks defense gave up more yards than the lowly LA defense and only 4 fewer points, and 7 of those could really be blamed on a special teams blunder. Having that many kicks blocked hopefully won’t happen again, that would’ve won a couple games this year.
It seems entirely possible that Mcsnead continues to go cheap on defense and does everything he can for Stafford.

Actually what's laughable is you projecting your feelings onto the situation. A lot of us have listened to his pressers and heard him say it multiple times.

except what McVay has actually said multiple times contradicts your statement. This has been the defensive scheme as a whole. They may tweak it some but it's been a bend but don't break for years. I would love to think if they invested heavily in the defense that style would change and be more aggressive but I wouldn't bet on it.

Perfect. So if Shula leaves welcome back Raheem!
I bet the majority of this board would like an aggressive attacking defensive scheme but history and more important McVay has said that this bend but don't break is the style he wants. I wouldn't trade McVay for anyone so I accept this is our defense.

This defense intercepted Darnold 6 times in 2 games. What happened Sunday when he had the game of his life and the Rams secondary had 0 interceptions? I'm not sure, but my gut tells me that the pass rush/pressure was just not getting there. Macdonald, the shithawk coach had planned on attacking the secondary and it was a great strategy. It was obvious when they went for a bomb to Shaheed on their second play on offense. Could Byron Young's bum knee made that much of a difference? I don't know. Just hoping to see a better defense in 2026.

It seems to me the bend don't break defense takes away time of possession from our offense and fatigues our defense. I prefer us to have an aggressive defense that gets our opponents offense off the field ASAP.

I agree. Maybe we just didn't have the personnel to run it but the toughest defenses in the past were not the "bend but don't break" style.

Last year the defense peaked down the stretch. This year the defense stated well and faded down the stretch. Did it get figured out or were they just worn down with attrition and minor injuries? If the defense had been able to get off the field on that last drive Stafford may have had another comeback in him but we will never know. Would having guys like Donald and Ramsey on the field help the Rams stifle Seattle on that last drive? I think so.

They struggled to contain big pass plays against Carolina and Atalanta, not exactly elite offenses. Explosive plays skyrocketed even though their style is bend don't break. Well, they broke on multiple occasions in the later half of the season. So, what changed? BY hampered, Forbes banged up, Lake going out. Did they wear down? They rolled the dice on their secondary and it became exposed. Witherspoon hurt, Forbes looked like he might be emerging into something then the wheels fell off and then he hurt his shoulder, Durant inconsistent as usual, Lake hurt, an aging DWil in and out of the linen up, Wallace hurt for a while.

For the most part the Rams avoided any catastrophic injuries but maybe the injuries to the secondary were enough to hamper a defense that did not have elite level talent to begin with especially on the back end.

The defensive front was only good, not great and the defense was sort of predicated on them carrying the day. Against Seatle they did not.

I don't really blame Shula but some adjustments should have been made. That last Seattle drive was the killing blow to the Rams season. Even if the Rams had actually scored and not failed on the fourth down I actually don't think the defense was good enough to stop Seattle from going down to score and win the game.

I'm not okay with an entire defense worth of cast offs and replacement players. The defensive line is the only talented level of the defense and honestly they're not stars either. Just good players. Can't blame Shula for that.
Agree, but we also need some young talent on offense. Outside of Puka, there are really no young stars on offense. Maybe Ferguson develops. I guess Jackson & Dotson could be called relatively young "stars". Otherwise they have a lot pluggers & overachievers or old vets like Stafford, Adams, Higbee, & Havenstein. The latter two will be gone.

Full agree. I'm on board with wanting Lemon with the 13th pick. I'd take Love too honestly.

It is. It also pertains to the offensive skill guys(in that other thread). Stafford has one Batman to throw to and none to hand off to.

It’s a total roster of mostly “good/decent” players that IMO is well coached, well run, well schemed all around but severely lacking in elite talent. Too many Robins.

Resume Shula thread….
I'm with you. The more blue chip players, the better. If we could add a player or 2 with those elite traits, it would only make this team that much more successful. I would never criticize a team that targets elite talent over need. That elite talent is what seals the deal a la Donald.
