First ever promotion to a coordinator position from within. Congrats to Chris rooting for the best. Sad all the negativity towards a guy most know jack shit about.

And Ernest Jones has been good from day one sorry.
Old School thinks.... My new avatar!

I don't really know this guy besides the last name, but McVay knows him and that's enough for me!

Well, as long as he does what I think is right....

Only 6 pages. RoD must love this hire.

Am I the only one who thinks Sean would NOT set himself up for failure?
Absolutely not. This team is too close to not be moving forward.

Nope I think McVay is very cognizant of the fact we prob got one more year of AD, and 2-3 of prime Stafford. He’s not going to want to waste any time on a project hire. He’s trying to win *now*.

Good point. One has to wonder if any of the defensive players had any input, especially a guy like Donald.

Now that we hear the “too smart for his own good” comments coming out about Staley, you also have to wonder if any of the players weighed in on that as well.

I will take a wait and see approach. He came in with McVay and he knows what Sean wants. The lack of pass rush wasn't necessarily his fault. As I've said it has more to do with how DCs use their players as much or more than talent. He was here through Phillips, Staley and Morris so he has seen the good the bad and the ugly.

What I like is just that. He's been here long enough to see what works and what doesn't. He's had exposure to Wade's one gap penetration fronts, to Staley's match zone and Morris' take it in the nuts approach. I could see him a bit of everything. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem with Morris is overall he was very predictable particularly on early downs. Staley was also zone heavy but was good at disguising the coverages.

He knows the coach and the roster. Let's see how he uses them. I'd rather it was from within the organization than from the outside. So I for one will give him the benefit of the doubt. Surprise us Chris and create a top 10 defense. He's got the guys if used correctly. So yeah I don't see this as a bad thing. It's why I expected Pleasant, for a lot of the same reasons. Being Sean's personal friend, it was time to groom him to be another branch in the McVay tree probably in 2026.

initially, i felt a slight tinge of disappointment...

but as i read probably the first 2 1/2 pages of this thread, i began to think, well the rams job may be the job, any potential DC would love to have...

and i have no clue who all they interviewed...

i have to think, maybe shula, blew them away in his interview...

none of us know what the rams saw or heard...

shula is the new DC...

i don't think the rams would risk taking a step backwards, which was my biggest fear once the search for a new DC began...

i'm gonna trust the guy that got us here...and i'm liking the place we're in as ramfans...

go shula..

go mcvay..

go rams..

The lack of pass rush wasn't necessarily his fault.
Of course not, it was Morris's fault. Everything is that was bad. Anything good was Pleasant.

to Staley's match zone and Morris' take it in the nuts approach.
Same scheme. I think this is just evidence that you may not like Morris. That isn't the case is it?

The problem with Morris is overall he was very predictable particularly on early downs.
False. But, if you disagree with my opinion ... show some evidence for your claim. Show some film clips to illustrate what you mean. I think it's been shown that you may not know what is going on.

I mean, if you are seeing a NT 2-gapping when it's not happening then maybe your recognition of a predictable early-down defense is faulty?

Staley was also zone heavy but was good at disguising the coverages.
Morris among the best at playing a disguise -- Dolphins, Rams, Panthers top 3 at playing something different than what is showing.

Staley more static, plays with no disguise 74% of the time., Morris 58%

Cody Alexander's chart for 2023.

I'm not mad at the hire. If they're saying he blew away his interview, and "in-house" people are excited, that tells me that our top defensive guys, and remaining assistants like the hire. Him being a Shula got him and opportunity years ago, but he's been with the org for 7 years, and his grandfather's legacy most certainly wouldn't have kept him in a job. He's earned his spot, and he's earned this opportunity. McVay's coaching tree has already surpassed some of the great coaches in NFL history, so I'm fine with trusting him giving a young, loyal coach an opportunity. Shula having the Linebacker coaching background gives me some confidence we'll be tough and aggressive in our front 7.

Replacing Eric Henderson and Jimmy Lake are now going to be the next important moves on the defensive side.

There’s not a person here that’s been in the same room as Shula.

I believe he got the job because he earned it.

McVay isn’t handing out favors to a friend.
McVay is one of the hardest working coaches out there. He agonizes about every detail and wants to win.
