Rams Week 11 report card: Grading every position vs. Chiefs
By: Cameron DaSilva
Quarterback
Jared Goff wasn’t perfect on Monday night, but he went toe-to-toe with Mahomes and matched him every step of the way, throwing three fewer interceptions. He finished with 413 yards and four touchdowns, one of his best statistical performances ever. If not for Goff, the Rams don’t win this game, especially given Todd Gurley’s recently revealed ankle injury suffered in the first quarter.
Grade: A
Running back
Gurley was hardly used against the Chiefs, touching the ball just 15 times in a game where the Rams scored 54 points. That’s because he suffered a minor ankle injury on the opening drive, which Sean McVay says “bothered” him throughout the game. He still mustered 94 yards on those 15 touches, but based on his standards, it was an underwhelming performance. Malcolm Brown did chip in 15 yards on four carries, as well.
Grade: B-
Wide receiver
Goff had a surprisingly hard time connecting with Robert Woods, who caught just four of his 11 targets for 72 yards and a touchdown. However, he and Brandin Cooks hooked up eight times for 107 yards, including a 30-yarder. Josh Reynolds was the real surprise here, catching six passes for 80 yards and a touchdown. He nearly had a second score, too, and made a nice one-handed grab after Goff scrambled.
Grade: A-
Tight end
Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee really stepped up against Kansas City. Everett caught three passes for 49 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner. Higbee added six catches on seven targets for 63 yards, as well, the best game these two have ever played together.
Grade: A-
Offensive line
The offensive line faced a tall task in stopping the Chiefs’ pass rushers. Goff was sacked five times, hit seven times and the Chiefs had six tackles for loss, wreaking havoc consistently. Chris Jones and Dee Ford were especially good, while Justin Houston also added a strip sack. Rodger Saffold struggled against Jones, as most guards do, but this is nothing to worry about.
Grade: C+
Defensive line
Aaron Donald once again carried the load with two sacks, two quarterback hits and two forced fumbles, though he didn’t make a tackle for loss, surprisingly. Ndamukong Suh was mostly a non-factor with just one tackle assist, while Michael Brockers had two total tackles. It’s hard for this unit not to earn an above-average grade with Donald running the show.
Grade: B+
Inside linebacker
Cory Littleton had a solid game with eight tackles, including back-to-back rangy stops on Kareem Hunt. Mark Barron wasn’t as effective, but it was a decent performance by the tandem, limiting Hunt to 70 yards rushing.
Grade: B
Outside linebacker
Samson Ebukam broke out with a sack, interception, forced fumble and two touchdowns, the first player ever to post that stat line. He won NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts, helping the Rams to victory. Dante Fowler was the only other outside linebacker to play meaningful snaps, recording three tackle assists.
Grade: A-
Cornerback
Tyreek Hill went off for 10 catches and 215 yards with two touchdowns, while Chris Conley added two scores on seven catches (74 yards) as well. The Rams’ cornerbacks struggled to cover both players, leading to a big day from Patrick Mahomes. Sam Shields had a rough night, as did Troy Hill, while Marcus Peters pulled down an easy interception.
Grade: C
Safety
John Johnson led the team with 11 tackles and Lamarcus Joyner chipped in seven of his own with a game-sealing interception. Neither was in good position on Tyreek Hill’s first touchdown, but Joyner had a nice pass breakup later in the game.
Grade: B+
Special teams
Johnny Hekker was a stud, pinning the Chiefs deep with two booming punts late in the fourth quarter. Greg Zuerlein missed an extra point and the two return specialists, JoJo Natson and Pharoh Cooper, struggled in that department, but it was a strong day from the special teams unit thanks to Hekker.
