I'm from the don't retire numbers all together camp, but numbers like 13 and 39 should be earned, I like what Michigan do don't retire the number but have a patch for the legends who wore it.

That's a good idea.

I agree with CGI its disrespectful for the RAMS to allow ANY player, let alone one of Greg Reid's character to wear SJ39's #. SJ has given so much to this organization over the years on the field, in the locker room, and in the community.

People suggest that CG shouldn't wear #13, but with all due respect to Kurt, how many seasons did he start in STL? 4? Imo that's not enough to warrant a retired number. Sure what he did over that 3 year stretch was historic, but he didn't have the longevity of a guy like Isaac.

I'm surprised he didn't choose 5. It is available. I'm curious as to why he chose to wear 39? Odd # to just pull out of a hat, especially for a DB. Small fast guys have traditionally adorned single digit or teen #s. I'd venture to say Greg will tell us it's all about a "new" beginning and out of respect for SJ.

To clear up some misconceptions, SJ didn't "carry" this team ,when you "carry" a team it's to victory, his career was way short on those, too short to term what he did "carrying". He was admittedly the best offensive player we had I'll give him that.
IF it doesn't bother SJ that a Ram is wearing his number,it shouldn't bother us and IF it does bother him I would remind him it was his choice to vacate that number in St.L so ,come back for league minimum ,his real market value now, and we'll give it back to him EVEN IF it pisses off the other guy..... Reid .

Each position has designated numbers:

to tell you the truth when i saw the heading i thought so what? then i read the op and was wondering which player wore that number that would make rams fans not happy about it.

as you can tell i don't pay much attention to the numbers on the players' backs.

I think single digit and teen numbers are not allowed for defensive backs in the pros. I believe there are certain numbers defensive backs are required to choose from.

I just looked it up. Defensive backs are required to wear the same numbers as running backs. They have to choose from the same set of numbers in other words.

Not sure when that rule went into effect.

At first I was like what the heck, but honestly it's not a big deal like a lot of posters pointed out. Givens with #13 and Saffold with #76, makes me say it shouldn't be a big deal if Reid wears #39. Love Jackson and all, but if our current Rams players can wear those numbers, then Reid wearing #39 isn't too big a deal. As long as Reid doesn't do something completely stupid off the field to embarrass or disrespect the team, I'm cool with it. Just can't take away numbers from current players, limited selection the more you go down the line in the future (well, I hope so anyway! :D)

Heck with that note, Mardy Gilyard wore #81!!! (Not that he was a bad person or anything)

On the subject of numbers was there any reason Bradford changed when he was drafted?

I believe he said he just wanted to have a new number since he's joining a professional league. He had a different number in high school, different number in college, then a different number in the NFL. Makes sense.

Gilyard wore 81 and talked about how everyone was walking around wearing his number when he first got drafted, so at least it's not that bad.

Look at the list of retired numbers. There are very few and Isaac is the only one on the list that is not in the HOF. How long did it take for Jack's number to be retired? I would say that if SJ makes it to the HOF - then retire the #. I'm pretty sure Isaac will be in. But there are 6 Ram HOFers with their numbers still in play. There is no slight to SJ here.

Exactly. As much as I loved me some SJ - is Torry's number not at least as sacred?
