Achilles healed, Rams’ Cam Akers is ready to roll in regular-season finale against 49ers

Rams running back Cam Akers, who suffered a torn Achilles in July, is on track to make his season debut Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, coach Sean McVay said Wednesday.

Akers was injured before training camp, seemingly sidelining him for the season. But Akers was activated to the roster two weeks ago.

Akers was listed as a full participant for the Rams’ jog-through Wednesday.

“Everybody else was at a jog-through and Cam was full-speed, flying around,” McVay said during a video conference. “So, he’s excited. He’ll be ready to go.

“Looking forward to seeing Cam make his debut this week.”

The enthusiasm in McVay’s voice whenever he was asked about Akers was infused with gamesmanship.

The Rams (12-4) have lost five games in a row against the 49ers (9-7), and McVay no doubt wants to keep 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan guessing.

The stakes will be high for both teams Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

If the Rams win, they will claim their third NFC West title in five seasons and earn the No. 2 seed for the NFC playoffs. If the 49ers win, they will earn a playoff spot.

Akers’ return strengthens a team that added linebacker Von Miller and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. at midseason.

After Akers played well as a rookie last season, McVay had planned to make the former Florida State star a centerpiece of the offense with an expanded role. That plan was shelved when Akers was injured, and the Rams traded for Sony Michel to back up oft-injured Darrell Henderson.

It proved a smart move.

Michel has been the starter for the last five games — and the Rams have won all of them.

In Sunday’s 20-19 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, Michel rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown in 19 carries. He averaged more than 100 yards rushing in the previous four games.

Working Akers into the regular-season finale will be a “feel thing” McVay said.

“You definitely want to make sure you keep Sony rolling,” McVay said. “But being able to get Cam involved and get his feet wet is something that’s important. ... Whether it’s package with both of them on the field or Cam kind of supplementing Sony if he needs a blow, that will be a little bit of a feel thing.”

But the Rams will be not overwork Akers, McVay said.

“He looks like he could carry it and play a lot of plays, but I think you want to be smart with an incremental approach,” he said.

“Is that 10 snaps? Is that 20? Is that 25?” he said. “I think that’s something that as the week progresses we’ll have a better feel for, but definitely want to get him involved.”

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth said Akers was excited for his opportunity.

“I think that they’ve tried to hold him back, just because it’s been insane, really, how fast he’s been healed and how well he’s done,” Whitworth said. “But seeing him all the time and being with him in the locker room and the training room when he’s been rehabbing, it doesn’t shock me.

“Just with the mentality he’s had and, really, the confidence you’ve seen in him from day one with this thing.”

Akers’ energy and positive attitude lifts teammates in the huddle, Whitworth said.

“He’s got a great aura about him and a great personality of just pushing guys, and he’s talkative and he’s in the moment,” Whitworth said. “It’s been fun, just the little time I’ve been with him to be in some huddles with him and realize how much he loves football.

“And I think it’s almost infectious how excited he is to get opportunities in games, and I think that’s something that brings guys up around him.”

I'm not arguing but are we sure no player has come back from an Achilles injury in the same year? I honestly don't know. I'm sure it's rare at minimum.
Not at a position where explosiveness, and raw athletic reactions are the most important trait. Never in my life have I ever heard of a 5 month recovery for a RB or CB, or WR. Or basketball player. Never, not in 5 months. I'd be interested if people can provide examples, but Dan Marino playing the QB position is nothing similar. Maybe it's happened before, but this type of recovery has to be in the 1% percentile probability.

I still have never seen a description of what he was doing when it happened or how severe the injury was. That might have a bearing on recovery time.

1) CAM IS BACK and he's gonna make a huge difference!

2) The Rams are 12-4 and can win the division AND knock the niners out of the playoffs...

3) Prime Time TV game against their hated division rival...

4) #2 seed on the line, 2 HOME playoff games, not to mention getting the niner monkey off McVays' back

5) the game is in LA and SOFI will be rockin'

I got a bad feeling about this game...
These games with the niners feel like the Rams against the Hawks games to me, no matter who the niners trot out there they seem to beat the Rams. I remember a some years back the Rams went into Seattle late in the season and beat the Seahawks with Case Keenum at Qb.. Kenny Britt maybe Tavon anyway you get the point. Freaking Nick Mullens won in LA last season. The niners are my all-time most hated team going back to the early 80’s, i sure hope McVay and the men can right these wrongs and finish them Sunday. I have to see it first to believe it. One can dream.

I heard he injured it doing box jumps. It was mentioned in one of the links posted here, I can't remember which one.

Its amazing that he’s back no matter how he did it. Still worry this is a huge risks for Akers and the Rams.

I share the worry about Akers coming back to soon. Presuming though that he is really ok, my next worry is the disruption to the chemistry established with Michel. I am quite happy to have him carry the entire workload or thereabouts. At this point I favor Michel over Henderson completely (injury or no injury).

Next year I would like Akers and Michel to fight for number 1 and share the load with Henderson as the back up. Of course Michel may not be here but it would be great if he could stay.

For the SF game I would be happy to run Akers 3 times and give him a pass out of the backfield just to get his feet wet. Or use him as a decoy.

I believe he will see the field in a limited role. I see as a jet sweep option/decoy. Maybe a pass or 2. No hard running up the middle.

I think he wouldn't be playing if he wasn't ready. Start game with Michel and bring in Akers on 3rd and longs. 10 12 touches. He will impact the game. Just like Suggs did when he played after 5 months. Just worry a bit about fumbles that is all.

I never really had a big connection to Bradford. I rooted hard for him especially early on but something about him always rubbed me the wrong way. It was the same thing with Jackson btw. Can't really explain it.
Me either (also).
(Maybe a Vegas thing).

A partial Achilles tear would mean a faster recovery.

Let Cam roll. You never know coming back from injuries like this but, I trust Cam and the Rams staff knows what they are doing.

Yeah.. I think we've heard "tear" but not "rupture" in describing the injury. I'm not an expert at all.. but I have to think, based on the recovery time, that this wasn't a ruptured achilles.

Are opponents ready for a 1-2 RB tag-team punch of Cam and Sony with Matthew utilizing play action passing to keep the defense honest? Can you even imagine how explosive! this offense would be with a healthy Robert Woods added to the mix?
