Achilles healed, Rams’ Cam Akers is ready to roll in regular-season finale against 49ers

Rams running back Cam Akers, who suffered a torn Achilles in July, is on track to make his season debut Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, coach Sean McVay said Wednesday.

Akers was injured before training camp, seemingly sidelining him for the season. But Akers was activated to the roster two weeks ago.

Akers was listed as a full participant for the Rams’ jog-through Wednesday.

“Everybody else was at a jog-through and Cam was full-speed, flying around,” McVay said during a video conference. “So, he’s excited. He’ll be ready to go.

“Looking forward to seeing Cam make his debut this week.”

The enthusiasm in McVay’s voice whenever he was asked about Akers was infused with gamesmanship.

The Rams (12-4) have lost five games in a row against the 49ers (9-7), and McVay no doubt wants to keep 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan guessing.

The stakes will be high for both teams Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

If the Rams win, they will claim their third NFC West title in five seasons and earn the No. 2 seed for the NFC playoffs. If the 49ers win, they will earn a playoff spot.

Akers’ return strengthens a team that added linebacker Von Miller and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. at midseason.

After Akers played well as a rookie last season, McVay had planned to make the former Florida State star a centerpiece of the offense with an expanded role. That plan was shelved when Akers was injured, and the Rams traded for Sony Michel to back up oft-injured Darrell Henderson.

It proved a smart move.

Michel has been the starter for the last five games — and the Rams have won all of them.

In Sunday’s 20-19 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, Michel rushed for 74 yards and a touchdown in 19 carries. He averaged more than 100 yards rushing in the previous four games.

Working Akers into the regular-season finale will be a “feel thing” McVay said.

“You definitely want to make sure you keep Sony rolling,” McVay said. “But being able to get Cam involved and get his feet wet is something that’s important. ... Whether it’s package with both of them on the field or Cam kind of supplementing Sony if he needs a blow, that will be a little bit of a feel thing.”

But the Rams will be not overwork Akers, McVay said.

“He looks like he could carry it and play a lot of plays, but I think you want to be smart with an incremental approach,” he said.

“Is that 10 snaps? Is that 20? Is that 25?” he said. “I think that’s something that as the week progresses we’ll have a better feel for, but definitely want to get him involved.”

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth said Akers was excited for his opportunity.

“I think that they’ve tried to hold him back, just because it’s been insane, really, how fast he’s been healed and how well he’s done,” Whitworth said. “But seeing him all the time and being with him in the locker room and the training room when he’s been rehabbing, it doesn’t shock me.

“Just with the mentality he’s had and, really, the confidence you’ve seen in him from day one with this thing.”

Akers’ energy and positive attitude lifts teammates in the huddle, Whitworth said.

“He’s got a great aura about him and a great personality of just pushing guys, and he’s talkative and he’s in the moment,” Whitworth said. “It’s been fun, just the little time I’ve been with him to be in some huddles with him and realize how much he loves football.

“And I think it’s almost infectious how excited he is to get opportunities in games, and I think that’s something that brings guys up around him.”

1) CAM IS BACK and he's gonna make a huge difference!

2) The Rams are 12-4 and can win the division AND knock the niners out of the playoffs...

3) Prime Time TV game against their hated division rival...

4) #2 seed on the line, 2 HOME playoff games, not to mention getting the niner monkey off McVays' back

5) the game is in LA and SOFI will be rockin'

I got a bad feeling about this game...
With so much on the line, the Niners have the potential to rip our hearts out. You skeered?

I never really had a big connection to Bradford. I rooted hard for him especially early on but something about him always rubbed me the wrong way. It was the same thing with Jackson btw. Can't really explain it.
Man, I felt the same way. Thought I was only one. Especially with regards to SJax....

As far as Cam goes, I am on record for how much I dig that cats game. My fave RB since Faulk.....just a nose ahead of Gurley. Something about the way he runs just does it for me....... giggity giggity.

You're giving me PTSD. That pre-season hit looked ominous from the start. People shit on Fisher a lot, and he was way out of touch with the modern game, but give him a starting level QB instead of forcing him to play backups all year every season, and that Rams team consistently posts 9+ wins in my opinion. They already were got for 7 wins, and QB is the one position that totally changes a team. Not sure if that would have been a good thing or not, as he likely keeps his job several years longer with those records.
Not to derail the thread but I'm not sure how far we could've went if he kept drafting raw athletic guys like Tavon and Quick.

High anxiety, elevated suspense! Cam could be the cog we need to complete this super bowl machine. Fingers crossed. The Niners are desperate for the win so cheap shots wouldn’t surprise me this week. Playoffs have started early!

I have exponentially more angst about this game than I would if it was a wild card game against the Iggles or Aints or whoever...Rams can win this game and should but it's really much more critical for the "Worthless Wienies"...Come on guys, make this freaking happen...I'm close to growing some wood thinking about tearing up the Whiners' ticket to the playoffs and to grab the 2 in one fell swoop...

The Rams will be reliant heavily on seasoned veterans to beat the 69ers. I trust our coaches and seasoned vets to be ready and to take care of business. So F*#k Coach Ratboy, Jimmy G-string, Ugly Gronk, Nick Bozo and their annoying POS rooters. Go Rams!!

I'm hoping they run Michel at them for the 1st quarter to wear their DL down, then trot Akers out there.
Pound them down then unleash the lightning.

I have no anxiety over there being a greater chance of injury for Akers coming back. By all accounts he looks great and there is no way they put him in jeopardy.

On Rams all access they really honed in on the difference Akers could be as a pass catcher.. and that really is a big deal. Michel's not really good at that and isn't a huge open field threat. We saw the kind of damage Akers could do in the open last season.

Would love to see it!

Yeah there were some yards left on the field with Michel as the underneath outlet pass. On third downs that will be Akers.

Also though teams do self scout which is why they look so bad in a phase one week then adjust it the next. So 9ers will have Warner all over those.

What you can't really adjust to schematically is being blown off the ball. So just feed Michel. Keep it balanced early. Play field position. Then mix in some shots. If we get a full team game Rams will drop the house on these guys. I think their bullshit streak has run its course.

Akers looks quick on his feet. But I really worry about him rushing things. They need to keep pounding the physical game with Michel. Then give a few carries to Akers to see where he really is in his progress. If he looks good he can be more of a factor in the playoffs.

If he's in a one back set I gotta think the defense will be looking for a run. They know the Rams want to get a look at him in real action. Might be a good time for a play action roll out the first time he lines up back there. Then hand him the ball if there's a completion.
