Sitting a rookie QB use to be the norm.I hate Green Bay for this idea of sitting a not ready for primetime QB behind a guy to learn. Outside of maybe Love and maybe Josh Allen, name the vast number of sucky rookie QB's who have been rehabilitated? I don't consider Goff as being eligible for this because McVay was directing him at all times in those early years and eventually gave up on him. Giving up any draft picks for this guy would be a waste to me.
Ignore the distraction of a Goff discussion and talk about rehabilitated QB's who have been worth a damn.
I fixed the spelling of roll/role but you should consider putting that on T-shirts and coffee mugs.
Make a Fortune!!!
Not really what I was talking about.Sitting a rookie QB use to be the norm.
There are back ups that have had good careers as starters once they were ready.
Rich Gannon, Brad Johnson and Kurt Warner are examples.
Great Jack Nicholson reference.Forget it Jake, it's Carolina.
Not sure I would label Rich Gannon a “system qb”Not really what I was talking about.
A blue chip rookie riding the pine until he's ready to supplant the old guy starter is different. I'm talking about the rookie disappointments, many of which have been demoted to the bench.
Kurt Warner had served in three leagues as he developed. I believe he was almost a finished product when he reached the Rams from NFL Europe, but the coaches didn't trust him because of his pedigree and that's why they went and got Trent Green.
Rich Gannon and Brad Johnson were guys that were just asked to not screw things up. I think they were system guys, not even close to the level of Warner. Jim Plunkett would also be in this group.
Besides, if this was really a thing, why can't we name 20 such guys?
Yeah, every early pick QB is expected to start immediately. Not really what I was talking about.

Mahomes is a blue chip player that never gave up his starting position after gaining it. I think the jury is out with sitting even these guys. Andy Reid is an old school coach, as was Jeff Fisher. Fish sat Goff for several games if memory serves. When Goff actually started that year, he sucked because the team sucked. McVay came in with Andrew Whittworth and veteran John Sullivan at Center to make calls about coverages. Goff was improved because protection and weapons were better with McVay in his ear every play. I think McVay may have improved Goff's confidence, but I don't know how much he improved in skills/ability wise. Mahomes sat and watched, but he was already a HOFer under the rookie costume, imo. He was what he was already going to me, I think.Yeah, every early pick QB is expected to start immediately.
I don’t think it’s a great idea, but it’s how today’s NFL works.
Even Mahomes had the opportunity to sit and learn for a year.
Even Blue chip prospects should be given time to learn in some cases.
I’m not saying Young will be the guy. I’m just comparing him to players that were able to sit and learn the position at NFL speed before becoming starters.
I just don’t think it’s fair to grade every high draft pick as if they are Mahomes or Stroud.Mahomes is a blue chip player that never gave up his starting position after gaining it. Manning and Aikman had the tools to rise above that first year, imo.I just don’t think it’s fair to grade every high draft pick as if they are Mahomes or Stroud.
P. Manning and Aikmen were both garbage their rookie years.
