Perkins is a third string QB who will never replace any starting QB sans injury. When McVay said there would be an open competition at QB last winter, before acquiring Stafford, he mentioned two players. Goff and Wolford. No mention of Perkins and for good reason.

Don't put too much emphasis on preseason performances.

Prior to the Stafford trade I wanted to see Perkins tried in an RGIII type of offense with the Rams.

But, alas, Bryce Perkins will be cut and placed on the practice squad if he isn't claimed by the Ravens.

I like Perkins! I mean, I really, really like Perkins!

And he's not close to Wolford at the moment, in my opinion.

Watch Wolford against preseason talent...

And let's not forget that Wolford was the first QB in NFL history to pass for 200+ and rush for 50+ in his first start.

I also have to point out the Rams haven't really scored much with Perkins at QB and he threw at least two balls that could've easily been picked last night, in addition to the one that was.

None of this takes away from how much fun Perkins is to watch or to say they shouldn't try to keep developing him, but he's not as good as Wolford.

nice stats, yet he led the O to zero TDs vs their divisional patsy. (his first start) a team they routinely scored plus 30 on with the QB whoms mere name may trigger some.

Annnd then he exited his next start via an Ambulance

Just the facts my man, no fluff

As I see it, Wolford is a “nice” backup

”nice, not thrilling, but nice”

Love Wolfords spirit then again I could say the same for Austin Blythe, it’s that pesky talent thingy that sometimes gets in the way

I don't believe Wolford will be having a second appendectomy. It's bad timing, not a durability issue.

Wolford didn't last long last year taking a head hit while running. He is a small move quarterback that can be suspectable to injury. He is ultra-competitive and football smart which is why McVay likes him. He really knows the offense. He does have some physical limitations.

I'm not sure Perkins passes through waivers. It might be a good idea to keep him on the squad but, roster spots are tight with the talent the Rams have. Perkins is a solid prospect as a backup QB with that added run dimension. These are the first games in two football seasons.

Perkins has decent poise, but a quirky, extremely short armed delivery.

But yeah- we are talking about a 3rd string QB so expectations arent very lofty. We arent in any danger of needing to compare him to Wolford just yet. The Wolford durability/productivity debate was divisive last year so I hope we can avoid that.

Maybe the Rams include Perkins(with picks) in a trade with Dallas for Pollard. With Dak's issues would you rather have Garrett Gilbert or Perkins as your #2?

Not sure what you're point is, in regards to the comparison to Perkins.

Also... Wolford's numbers in the game vs the Cards were about the same as Perkins had... in a pre-season game against backups and 3rd stringers.

Austin Blythe was adequate last year, so I'm not sure the comp?

Anyway, Perkins isn't going to be any kind of threat to Wolford's position on the Rams.

I might keep 3 QB's as IMO, McVay can create certain packages to include Perkins, if Perkins is available on gameday. It's a tough call, IMO, Wolford is more accurate, but Perkins can be electric, however, still is a work in progress with passing down field.

FWIW, it was nice to see a Ram QB escape the lookout blocks by Evans & Brewer, if I was coaching Evans in pass protection, I would instruct him to fall down, with hope the DL trips over him because it's better protection then he's offering now.

Perkin's arm strength is questionable. Love his running abilities but that would not work with our offense which relies heavily on our passing offense. Maybe in a wildcat play? I dunno.

In the 3rd preseason game, our opponent will possibly get their starters a series or two. It would be nice to see Perkins play against them before considering anything further...

We have 3 preseason games to make decisions on the 53 man roster... ummm... how about we use them?

McVay has shown that if he thinks so highly of you that you don't even dress for preseason games, then you are a "made man" (in mafia terms). McVay said about 35 guys wouldn't dress for the SD game, so it's not limited to starters.

Still remember how McVay was positively glowing when he talked about Wolford after Arizona, how he said Wolford was the MVP of the game and all that. Also remember how excited McVay was to start Wolford in the playoffs.

Compare McVay's confidence in Wolford to Perkins--a really raw guy who has all of 2 preseason games under his belt, with 3rd stringers. The Rams are SB contenders. Are we really supposed to think McVay would hand over the car keys to a guy that raw? Just makes no sense. Yeah Perkins looked good tonight, but as other posters noted, he made his share of mistakes and poor throws.

I agree with @Merlin that Perkins definitely could develop and challenge Wolford for #2 next year.

But to say McVay is going to cut an established vet backup that he's shown a ton of faith in, for a guy who's so raw and unpolished? The guy who was fourth behind "Duck" just a week ago?

No freaking way McVay is cutting Wolford and going with Perkins as the #2 right now. That notion is deserving of a bong hit.
So I don't remember the McVay MVP talk of Wolford or that he was uniquely excited about Wolford starting in the playoffs. I have zero doubt that a completely healthy Goff would have been option #1 even with McVay's obvious disillusionment with him.

I also don't see how Perkins was behind Hodges at any point. Hodges might have been one to get more of a look at because Perkins was here last year. But I doubt he was ever considered to be ahead of BP.

I view Perkins as being more raw than Wolfy but having a higher ceiling. He does what Wolfy does but with more physicality. I like Wolford but think he will be exposed by NFL defenses.

Personally, I'd keep three until you can teach up Perkins or find a better #2.

Do the Rams carry 3 QBs this year? It's obvious how much McVay likes Perkins. There is another reason as well. If you watched the AZ game, it's clear to me they would grab Perkins because he's what Murray would like to be. Murray continues to struggle reading defenses. Perkins is improving in that regard. In many ways, Perkins is better even as a #2 than anyone else on the Cards roster.

The other option might be to release Wolford at the last cutdown. He stands a much better chance of clearing waivers than Perkins right now. There is too much positive film on Perkins now that IMO he wouldn't clear waivers.

Wolford will be an ERFA next year meaning the Rams control whether they keep him. Perkins would be an ERFA in 2023 meaning they control him for 3 years as opposed to Wolford's 2 years. Perkins would also, make pretty good trade bait as well. I wasn't overly enthused with Perkins after last week. But he showed me something tonight. In another year Perkins will be a better QB than Wolford. He's simply got more upsides. Perkins has starter potential. I'm not sure Wolford does.

Perkins would provide the Rams with a long terms alternative to Stafford. They control Bryce for the next 3 years. A lot can happen to Stafford in that time. Perkins would potentially offer McVay a homegrown solution at QB as a follow-up to Stafford.

Right now Perkins' timing is many times slow. Many of his passes to Tutu were inaccurate and late. But those are things that are correctable by good coaching. Perkins isn't a running QB but he has the ability to run well when he needs to. He has shown an ability to extend plays. What Perkins gives the Rams is the potential of having a true starting quality QB behind Stafford, not just a good bandaid which Wolford brings to the table.

There was a time teams carried 3 QBs as their normal roster. The idea being a true developmental future starter is worth more than the lowest player on the roster. In the Ram's case this year that may in fact be what McVay is thinking. The rumor is that Perkins was going to be Goff's eventual replacement. I think the Ram FO may still have that perspective. Perkins may give the Rams an option 5 years from now. They realistically could keep Perkins for at least 4 more years maybe 5 if Perkins knew he was going to be the next starting QB, i.e. much like the Saints and Hill. This will give them an option to extending a QB who would be 38 or 39 years old.

IMO that is why Sean played Perkins this entire game and why he was smiling at the end of it. I think we just saw Perkins become the #2 QB. The only question now is do they keep Wolford? I think they do simply because finding good backup QBs isn't as easy as some think. It's why I think why not carry 3 QBs for 2 years? Then let Wolford walk when he's a UFA three years from now. Until then the Rams have true depth at the most important position on the team.
Keep in mind he was playing against 2nd & 3rd teamer's, playing vanilla scheme's. Granted, he was also playing with backup's playing vanilla schemes, but it's a huge break vs playing a real game where he would be playing against starters, gameplannig against his strengths.

Plus, not sure he has the arm talent to execute our bread & butter offensive principal's effectively at this point.

He is a nice to have guy who can be used to practice against when you play mobile QBs, etc... and still develop him to maybe where someday he could be a back up or gadget guy.

Our 3rd QB will be on the practice squad... Ether Perkins (if he clears waivers) or Duck Rodgers.

Yeah I had forgotten the exact wording, but McVay said Wolford was "the star offensively" of the AZ game. Mainly I just remember McVay's tone and body language, he was just gushing about him, in a way I've rarely seen.

And Jourdain Rodrigue did some reporting last year that indicated just how deeply disillusioned McVay was with Goff, and also how genuinely excited they were about Wolford.
