It's how they made Spygate go away. Make sure Matt Walsh was as big a distraction as possible, promising he had something huge and drawing it out as long as he could.

When it turned out he had nothing, no one wanted to hear about the defensive signal taping any more.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Walsh was paid by the Patriots that year and it was a deliberate distraction all along.
